Apparently all of our 4 digit ID/.ers are all uncommonly rich.
Of course, all the slashdot users with less than 6 digit ID's get a 7 cent check from slashdot everytime there is a duplicate story. We try not to talk about it much. That is how we fill our penny jars.
Umm, no. It's fairly simple to make "card1-1.jpg" the first card in player 1's hand every single time, but sending different image data.
Bandwidth is cheap, but it's not free. If I had to download the card images everytime I'd be upset.
On top of that, chances are they just encrypt the data and tell the client which card they have in encrypted format. The card images are read from the local harddrive anyways.
Not necessarily. It might reside on their servers as jack_spades.jpg, but what you get might be http://somegamblingsite.com/?player=23592361&card= card1 which returns a file card1.jpg
And yet the file card1.jpg is not a unique name? The overhead on generating a random link everytime a hand is dealt for each card is too much. Who cares if the image name is: paris_hilton.jpg when in fact it's a picture of the Queen of hearts? We know that then the client requests paris_hiltom.jpg that they are either surfing pr0n or displaying the Queen of hearts.
As a Netflix subscriber, I have a "Cancel Your Membership" button on my account page...
As a netflix subscriber who can no longer afford the $23/mo for the service I have just cancelled my netflix account successfully in the My Account page.
That said, it did offer a $3/mo discount on the next 6 months if I chose not to cancel instead. Might be worth it for people who can afford netflix.
I've always thought registering to vote is silly. In order for a democracy to work, you need as many as possible to vote, so requiring them to register first is inconvenient (and we all want convenience).
I don't know what the big deal with registering to vote is. When you get your drivers license there is a checkbox asking if you want to forward your information to voter registration. When you renew your license, or change your address on your license the same thing... "do you want to register to vote?" checkbox
In my experiance, getting registered to vote is actually very easy. It's just that when you don't vote for X number of elections you then lose your registration. Which you then get back when your lisence expires and you renew it.
If you aren't registered to vote you are just plain lazy.
I stopped trusting anything mail-in when I was a kid. You see, Kellogg had this "special offer" on the side of their box that claimed you could get a FREE Darkwing Duck knapsack with X number of proofs of purchase, and a few dollars shipping and handling. Being the big DW fans we were, my siblings and I all dutifully at our cereal, snagged our UPCs, and sent in the money (a lot for a kid!).

Thats so strange, when I was a kid out of the blue I got 5 darkwing duck knapsacks sent to me. I had no idea where they game from, but I was extremely happy to have them!
He created a device, that was subsequently destroyed upon use, that allowed the gate to dial up one of the Asgard worlds.
Wasn't destroyed, the SGC was just unable to ever getting it working again until later when they were contacted from another universe by Dr. Carter and one of the guys who was killed in the original episode.
They brought it to the other universe and it was used to dial the Asgard to save the planet from Apophis.
who cares about the puss content of 1/3rd of America's childrens' milk?
As long as it's not my childrens milk....
on a more serious note, my father-in-law is a small dairy farmer. (~200 cows with 70 milking at any given time). As a dairy farmer it is a part of his job to keep his cows healthy, if his cows come down with mastitis or an udder infection he gets a vet to make the animal healthy again. During that time the milk is milked and thrown away.
He tests his milk before it leaves the farm, as well as the company he sends his milk to testing each and every truck of milk they receive.
If he were to allow tainted milk to get on the truck the policy of the company he sells his milk to is that he has to pay the cost of the milk on that truck (From multiple farms, and the cost of cleaning the truck.)
Sure, these infections can be bad if they get into the milk, but knowing the precautions that go into the supply chain I would say it is extremely rare to get tainted milk.
You are forgetting deductions on your taxes. Just completed my taxes and for Being Married with one child my standard deduction was (IIRC) a little over $9k. That is $9k that you aren't charged taxes on.
If you are single, I believe the deduction is $6k but I'm not positive, havn't been single in awhile so I havn't bothered looking at the deductions.
You can do what you are looking to do very inexpensively (not counting time) if you get a Linux supported PCMCIA card and a Toshiba SG-20. The SG-20's are available for ~$200 (Cheaper on ebay I'm sure) and they have a built in 7 port hub, 1 external interface, and a PCMCIA slot which you can put the wireless card into and setup an ad-hoc network for wireless users.
I currently use the SG-20's for a managed firewall solution for small businesses which I run Gentoo on. (You can substitute your Distribution of choice of course)
The uniforms suck. The flight suits are okay, but the wrestling outfits are terrible!
Actually, I thought it was funny that at one point you saw the captain and if you looked you could see he was wearing a tanktop backwards. My Wife commented that it's an interesting way to make "futuristic" clothes.
Sure the highjackers would have had guns too. But 9/11 as we know it would not have happened. It would have been 4 planes crashing in remote fields instead of 2 in the WTC and 1 in the pentagon, and one in a field.
Recent studies have shown that the paint used is a near chemical relative to rocket fuel.
Caffeine is a near chemical relative to morphine, but you don't see it being used as a pain reliever.
There are roughly eight TV channels per multiplex at PAL resolution which is quite a bandwidth. So how is this new?
Does your TV Stream 8 TV channels back to the stations?

(What, you didn't know about the hat recognition satellites?)
Of course I know about the hat recognition satillites, thats why I make a new one each morning!
The government spy satelites can actually image individual crinkles on our tin-foil hats.
That is exactly why I wear Tin Foil Sombrero's, and I make a new one each morning before work.
Guaranteed to stop those mind control waves along with making you close to impossible to be followed by face recognition spy sattilites.

A company that needs a copy of SQL server for an 8 way box ($112,000) will more than likely have more than 1000 users (1000x$299=$299,000)
Looks like a cash cow to me.

Depends, how much did SuSe or RedHat pay you to make your post? And how much did SCO pay me to make this post?
probably 3 times as much as the intern was paid to post the article about Bill Gates.
There ya go, proof that RedHat is willing to pay 3x the amount that Microsoft pays for word of mouth advertising!
This did actually happen: http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/newlywed.htm

Wow inexpensive & reliable... Those are two words you don't see together too often.
"Good, Fast, Cheap: Pick any 2."
So, how'd you make it move on it's own power? I'm intrigued.
Cardboard fueled boiler for the steam engine I would assume.

So your math is certainly off there.
And what spells does a level 7 cleric have to clear it up?
Turn undead?
all compiled from source.
As opposed to say, a Linksys Router, which we all know is compiled from Cheerios. =)

Slashdot has never been a balanced news site, nor has it ever claimed to be a balanced news site. Where did you get the idea that it was?
Even the main graphic tells you that, It's news for nerds. Not "News for Nerds, but completely balanced "
