  1. review integrity on Amazon Doles Out Freebies To Juice Sales of Its Own Brands (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

Allowing people to edit reviews after the fact is probably just as bad in terms of having a trustworthy platform.

    Case in point:
I bought a cheap xbox 360 compatible controller from some rando Chinese company. It of course, was a total piece of shit. (battery terminals had a faulty contact, thumb-stick's were lacking in sensitivity. poor battery life etc) -- it was just materially inferior in every way to a proper model.

So I post a scathing review; stating these facts. A few days later I get a message from the company offering to refund my purchase entirely (and let me keep the item) If i'd change the review to at least 4 stars, and list something positive about it.

I'm assuming this is a pretty common practice. And a consumer lacking scruples might just go ahead and take the bait.

  2. If an american company is doing it, and has the technology there -- it just means that in 6 months to a year, all the Chinese companies will also have that same technology.

  3. Is there actually a market for this kind of crap? on Facebook Plans Camera-Equipped TV Device, Report Says (cheddar.com) · · Score: 1

What kind of idiot would willingly invite facebook into their home in this fashion? It's bad enough how they have dug in like a horrible, privacy invading tick into out phones and browsers, and now this?

    Fuck off.

  4. Obama Administration approved more assassinations through the use of drone strikes etc than any other President in history

That makes about as much sense as saying Truman sanctioned dropping more atomic bombs than any president up until that time.

Besides, it's factually inaccurate. It's a known fact that Teddy Roosevelt sanctioned many, many predator drone strikes during the Spanish American War. Learn your history please.

  5. And as a plus; you could have advertisers directly beam you timely and useful product information.

What's funny is the number of musicians over the years who got their start by trading casettes/samples/remixes. So on one hand, there's a little bit of *POTENTIALLY* lost revenue from that piracy, but it's absolutely dwarfed by the infusion of new blood into the industry that only exists because of the eeeebil piracy.

Same thing with FOSS; by allowing people to enhance and extend existing stuff, or pivot off of ideas found elsewhere, the industry and society at large are enriched.

Exactly this. the left/environmentalists need to come up with solutions that don't involve telling/shaming/forcing people to live their lives in a politically correct manner.

Reducing another person's standard of living is in all places, all times, and all universes an abject non-starter. And this is exactly where modern environmentalism has lost the plot. I can't think of a 'nosier' political movement..

Instead, come up with creative ways to sequester carbon, or incentivize waste reduction (aside from the tax-cudgel) -- and you'll see far less resistance to conservation.

  24. Circa 1997 Random House had an online gaming section where you could answer personal questions about yourself in exchange for 'free' credits to play games on their site. Nineteen Ninety Seven -- they had FB's business model in mind, just shit execution.

~2000/2001 When I was in college some credit card company (Cap one I believe) showed up outside the dorms with 'free' pizza to any student who'd sign up for a credit card - which i'm sure had less than .. competitive rates/terms/fees. The line was probably 50 deep.

At Walmart a year or two ago once I saw a booth where if you sign up for a Walmart credit card you'd get a 'free' jumbo-sized candy bar. (I wish this was a joke, but sadly, it is true.)

You would be surprised at the lengths people (and not just naive 18 year old kids) will go to get something they perceive to be 'free'.

The game that the coffee shop is running is not even remotely new; they're just gussying it up a bit differently.
