    We dont care! This is NOT a Linux website, its a GEEK website. The last thing we need to do is read about 10 billion games being ported to Linux/BeOS now... *sigh*

    Im sure the base will be free, but the entire
    GUI and every other part will be closed. This is a good thing, because if you look at every win manager they all suck because they rely on so much crap to work from so many other people, and there are so much crap to install. Its annoying as hell.


    Trust me when I say that you wont even notice it's running on Linux when it is released. You'll have your source, but just the non-important stuff.



    This is a good thing. The more control they have, the less other twits can mess it all up (like the majority of the Linux community, nothing ever works right, its so convuluted.)

    Coding is done by a coder, or a programmer. NOT
    a hacker. A hacker plays with someone elses code,
    and alters it to fit their needs. Hackers also alter computer hardware to fit their needs, just like they alter web sites and buildings. The keyword here is the means of altering something that someone else has already started to turn into what you want it to be/do.


    Being a coder/programmer does not make one a hacker off the bat. If you are handed source code from your boss and are asked to change it to fit company standards, he is effectively asking you to hack it, changing your role from a programmer (who would start from scratch) to a hack(er).

    For countless decades college people have been
    pulling off huge hacks of breaking into buildings and changing their entire look. Most notibly the building that looked like R2D2 this year at a college campus. Im sure you all saw this.


    This is exactly the same as breaking into a web server and sticking different pages on the site, as we have all seen. And letting everyone notice it the next morning. There is no difference, they are both hacks pulled off by hackers.


    Crackers are people who break codes. Be it cryptology, or copy protection on the latest software, or someones password. This does not include web site alterations and machine alterations (malicious or not.). The process of getting into the system is called the cracking, the process or altertering one from another with what tools and sources you have is called hacking.


    End of story. People need to figure this out. And Slashdot readers are a bit behind on the definitions.

    There is a difference. People don't use Nt Server and Linux for playing games and word processing, they use desktop OS's like Windows 95/98, BeOS, and MacOS.

    Is because Linux has started its downhill decent
    of being overhyped, overtalked, and generally the people that support it are mostly all pompous jerks (Ever try and get help from a Linux user on IRC or via email? Maybe even off one of the many web sites?). Granted, thats such a large generalization, but the news scene is definately seeing it, with reports how Linux really isnt any faster than NT, etc, etc... We dont WANT to think we are the best OS, we dont WANT to try and say how much better we are, we just want people to give it a try and see for themselves. We shouldnt HAVE to make noise.

    Which, by the way, is the majority of Windows
    users. So, Be has a HUGE userbase. Check out some
    of the IRC channels, the web sites, all the companies porting software, and the software base as of right now (Yes, there IS a ton of software available!). I personally use BeOS because I know the OS and GUI are locked source and will always be under control, so I wont have any incompatabilities like I did with Linux and E. There is finally a TRUE saviour, and it sure isn't Linux!

The advantages and disadvantages have been CLEARLY laid out about Open Source and its day and night why BeOS is NOT Open. (and why Linux keeps getting RAILED in the real world envs for being Open)

    I think he stated his and everyone elses points
    about OSS wonderful. How its just not right for some OS's, and life and blood for others. Of _COURSE_ I would want the source code to a SERVER OS that my company relies on. But damned if I want anyone touching my Workstation OS source! It just isn't that important, and so NON mission critical... There really is no need. The last thing people need is alternate window managers that no one knows how to install, etc, etc...

    Ive got the E-100 and it has a slot for
    the IBM Microdrive when its available. Not only that, it has full stereo MP3 output, 16_BIT_ color, and 32MB to start with. And it fits in
    my front pocket really nice, too. Oh yah, battery
    is rechargable, and lasts me around 8-10 hrs of
    use. AND you can plug power directly into the
    Unit, so you wont have to worry about batteries
    while its in your car.

    Oh yah, it has a 131Mhz processor that makes CE _FLY_. Nothing has done this till now, and makes
    all Palm Pilots look like utter CR*P.

    One other thing, theres a digital video/picture
    camera for it as well.

    Why wasnt THIS news instead of that piece of CR*P
    click thing? ;)

    Its just a dumb slashdot term. Hacker is what
    they've always been called straight through the
    70/80s and into the 90s. Its only recently that people on slashdot have tried to change the definition and it's quite annoying. Cracking the
    password is only 1% of the total job, the rest
    is being a hack with what tools you've got. Hence,
    the hacking. Thats what the most part is. Sure, there are people that just crack files and passwords, but thats ALL THEY DO. All these other
    kids go through multiple hosts, run your famous scripts, run your famous programs, do whatever else they can do to be a 'hack'.

    Uneducated foo's.

    If this gets in the way of the future offering T3
    bandwidth to every home for $10 a month, then I say its a bad idea. Bandwidth needs to be virtually free to everyone who needs it. One of these days the larger companies will have virtually unlimited bandwidth that they have no use for and the entire world will be able to pull off as much as they want for a very minimal fee. Hell, you might see commercials saying 'Join our
    backbone and get your own T3 for free, and get 1 hour video conferencing per month for free!' (As a seperate non-digital service) .. Or cable tv, etc.

    Give us the unlimited speed we need.

    People overlook all the weaknesses of Open Source,
    the complexity of Unix that will NEVER bring it to
    the community that Windows owns, and god knows what else. Its a geek TREND, nothing else. If you're a self-imposed geek, its cool to like Linux and Open Source and nothing else.

    Thats all there is to it. Go ahead and flame me, but all one has to do is read enough /. and you'll see it for yourselves.

    Thank god all these 'geeks' aren't racists because the world would truely be screwed up with one sided ignorance with the likes that the KKK has never seen.

    heheh.. The MWave is truely the crappiest piece
    of hardware ever created. Thats pretty much well
    know for everyone who has done anything with computers. If they dont try integrating all this
    crap into one chip, we'll be okay, otherwise, byebye Nintendo. Again.

    BTW, N2000 better be faster than the PSX2, which
    is doing realtime BETTER than Toy Story quality
    3D (seen it in action, trust me, it gives ANYONE
    a huge woody. They could make movies with this engine! Byebye SGI!)

    Let them do this. They will all be sent to jail and/or heavily fined for releasing a known virus into thousands of peoples computer systems.

    Just to say it one more time, MP3 has already
    shown itself to be the defacto standard. There
    is no disputing that. Companies can release all
    the different formats they want, but it is just
    TOO LATE for anyone to bother using them.

    Use MP3 or lose money. Thats the bottom line. Like it or leave it.

    I went to Star Wars when I was only 3, and I remember parts of it, most notibly the trench scene and the part with the interrogation bot. I'm so happy I remember just those fragments and that I was actually a part of the original Star Wars 'thing' .. ! If nothing else, take him and he'll be able to brag to friends later on in life. ;)

    Yeah, i know, thats coming off a bit lame, but I get all tingly knowing ive seen all 3 movies in the theater. Maybe it was because I shouldnt have
    seen the first one because I was so young.. Either way, it cant hurt!

    Oh yah, on a side note, my parents also took me to see Alien when I was 5 (I think it was 1979?) and I came out screaming and crying, and now its my FAVORITE MOVIE because nothing has scared me so much, and I completely love the creepyness to the entire movie (as well as Aliens, which made me unable to sleep right for 2 weeks!). SCARE THE CRAP OUTTA YOUR KID! Its great!

    Because QuickTime as it is BLOWS much ass. Play it on any platform other than a Mac and it chunks away eating up processor and generally looks really bad. MPG and AVI both blow it away easily. Why people even both with QT while MPG and AVI are around is beyond me...

    Once again, Chuck D shows us who is at the fore-front of practically EVERYTHING. They broke all the bounds in the rap world in the 80s and early 90s, now they're back at it again. Way to be Chuck D!

    $10 is a great price IMO, and being a huge PE fan, I will gladly pay it. Other people who aren't big fans will probably think this is a bit high, but hey, it's the market! If one of your fav bands released online music for $10, im sure you'd all run out there an nab it. Chuck has a vision, and it's a good one, he's got my money.

    Now, what format.. I can only hope it will be MP3. (or any other format that works with WINAMP) If it turns out being in some proprietary format that I can't play in the now-standard MPMans, and PDAs, then I don't think I will be buying it. Sure, MP3 is non-secure from piracy, but then again, the ones stealing your music arent the fans who will be buying it in the first place. Fans stand by their favorite artists.

    Any cinema that doesn't convert ALL their screens
    to show Star Wars will be burned to the ground! Can you imagine how many PISSED people will be standing around trying to cram into TWO or THREE
    screens for this movie? Sure, it's standard for big films, but this movie, is literally, LARGER THAN LIFE. You know it, I know it, and the Cinemas
    know it. Someone slug Lucas over the head with a cluebat.

    I can see why he is doing it, so Cinemas dont lock out the competetion. BIG NEWS: NOTHING IS COMING OUT EXCEPT A SAPPY LOVE MOVIE FOR _3 WEEKS_ AFTER PHANTOM MENACE IS RELEASED. Hello?
