Saadam kills 10,000 Kurds with poison gas. Bush plans for war. Obama condemns. Demos scream for Bush impeachment.
Assad kills 1,000 Syrians with poison gas, Obama plans for war. Demos strangely silent.
Proof point. DNC is as hypocritical as it claims GOP is.
And, the nothing gets done in Washington.
Driving is freedom, but with responsibility. Maybe that is the REAL problem people have with cars, they have to be responsible.
If you are in stressful driving situations on a day to day basis, change something. Move, take a bus/train. Just don't blame cars.
HuffPost is just another political hack site. There are a lot of them, right, left, up, down.
In my experience, those who post or obsess over those kinds of sites really need to get a life. No one learns anything, time simply wasted.
Go to the 'Death Clock' website. See how much longer you have on this planet. Ask yourself if yet another opinion on a hack politician or a phony cause is worth what time you have left. Watch a sunset, help a neighbor, read a book.
Jobs was successful. Others were bitter.
That is the lesson I took away from my years at Apple in the early days.
I am not so sure that Jobs was brilliant as the competitors were morons. Gates was brilliant at MS in the early days, as are a very few other pioneers in the PC industry. May to most were just average engineers, or hucksters, who fell into something and confused luck with skill. None had a bit of management skills, and used force of personality and brute ego as their primary management tool. I thought Mike Markula, one of Apple's three founders, was one of the better people in the industry, and I credit him with a large part of Apple's success.
I left HP for Apple because the clowns there could not see the reality of the world. If Bill Hewlett and David Packard were still running operations, HP would have been Apple. But, the MBAs ran things at HP then. IBM wasn't much better, but did get in when there was money. DEC and DG were the worst.
Jobs surrounded himself with the best people I have ever worked with then and since. In every area of the company. Not sure how much was Steve, how much was everyone else, as I was not privy to most of the big thinking. Thank Markula maybe. Not Scully, that is for sure.
Got it..
Actually, Global Warming has two causes.
A. Availability of government grant money
B. Availability of good booze and cheap hookers in GW conference city.
Sometimes difficult to believe for Slashdot readers, but Computer Science or any other science is static until someone figures out how to actually build a business around it.
Lots of snarky Apple haters out there, but it doesn't matter. The company continues to turn out innovative products that people want.
Reminds me of a consumer trade show, where a Phillips 'marketing' person was answering complaints regarding a Smart remote control product they was trying to sell. "My mother may buy this" I said. How would she make it work with her off-brand TV? "Well, you would need to install a piece of code we have. Just tell her to fire up Visual Basic.....". That conversation pretty much sums up the entire consumer electronics problem before Apple.
"Give NASA a Pentagon-level budget and we'd see a space elevator in a decade."
Or, they would confuse metric with standard measurements again....
Forget NASA, let private enterprise do it. It already is doing much of their work anyway.
One thing that seems to be left out of this debate. We, the voters of the US elect our government. We believe what MS/NBC or Fox (take your pick) tell us. We substitute real debate for screaming heads, because it is more fun to watch while we drink beer.
For those who blame Bush. What, you put up Al Gore and then the hapless John Kerry and expect to win? DNC is run by morons.
For those who Blame Obama. Obama can talk, that is all. Has no experience running anything, and has never even had a real job for christsake. Yet two competent leaders, McCain (tough surviver of a POW camp) and Romney (who ran an Olympics) couldn't even handle Obama in a simple debate? RNC has their head up their anal cavity.
So, you expect that the IRS will NOT be used for political extortion? You expect that the NSA will NOT be used for political advantage?
We are getting the government we deserve from the politicians we trust.
Good repost of all things MoveON. The fact that you can summarize complex issues in one line indicates you are unable or unwilling to think on your own. Try posting to Rush's or MS/NBC sites. They are your kind.
The alert system is illogical and chaotic. The stupid people are the politicians who created this mess.
Nothing new in California. Like the billions going into a high speed rail system for an area where no one lives.....
I late in the evening, three cell phones in our household started loudly emitting the most obnoxious noises since the last Pelosi news conference.
What the HELL is that? When we finally figured it out, I Googled 'Amber Alert on cell phones', and was able to turn off the racket. And, I disabled the function.
What was it for? Does ANYONE in Sacramento really think that alerting the entire state helps find abducted children? If so, wouldn't a simple text or email work? All that will happen now is that AT&T users will disable Amber alert functions, and get on with their lives.
How much taxpayer money was WASTED on the fiasco?
"A lot of doctors are giving treatments that are very profitable but actually harm patients, like spinal injections of steroids http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Compounding_Center [wikipedia.org]"
Post when you have major back problems and can hardly walk. See how you feel when a competent Dr gives you a proper injection.
Kind of like all the comments from rich Libs here who don't have kids...
No study I have read indicates that class size affects education. Quality of teaching does.
Teachers Unions are the largest reason we have lousy schools.
Theatres were in bad shape in the late 90s. 7 of the 10 major chains were in or near bankruptcy. Hollywood greed and stupid business decisions were equally to blame. Hollywood held all the cards. They controlled where and how the movies were shown. $2K for a film reel, $2-300 to transport it to each theater. But, people still came. Dirty carpet, lousy, expensive food, noisy buildings. But $4-6 for a movie was cheap entertainment for a couple or a family
As the Theaters consolidated, things changed. Sushi instead of stale hot dogs. New stadium seating, better sound that at anyone's home. Clean carpets.... and $12-14 tickets.
People still came, in spite of the rise of Hulu, Netflix, BB online, etc. Why? Because seeing to movies was MUCH better in a theatre. Plus, it was a chance to get out of the house. Recession racked families were not eating out as much, not taking week vacations to the beach. Needed short breaks in a nice cool (or warm) place with great sound and huge displays. Can't go as much, a trip being $60-70 with tickets and a snack for a family of 4.
I haven't been to a theatre in probably two years. We went recently. New building, nice seats, great sound. Also, lots of rude people. The couple in front of us were watching something on an iPad. Girl behind me texting and giggling the entire movie. Some smelly people nearby. Despite multiple warnings on the screen, people continue to hold up their phones to try to take pictures of the screen to send out.
Hollywood? Yes, the quality of movies is low, but that has been an issue for 3 decades. The real issue is what the low quality people sitting around me in the theatre want. I am the target for the theatre chain. Disposable income, some time on my hands. Not many movies for me. Instead we get the fodder for stoned teens- boobs and bombs. Problem comes in when unemployed, stoned teens are priced out of fancy theatres. They can still go, but for how long?
And, I don't plan on going back anytime soon.
Bottom line- Hollywood and Theaters are on opposite tacks.
Is Microsoft doomed? The answer given depends completely on your view of the company... a technology provider or a stock investment.
As a technology provider, it is week old milk. Stuff still works, but soon will be essentially useless, unless you are making sour cream. They have missed multiple opportunities to still be in the games that Apple and Google are winning. Enterprise stuff is me too and late.
As a stock investment, you have a company that the 'value' buyers see. Tons of cash, still generation more, but at a slowing pace. All the numbers point toward undervalued. A number of friend supports their decision to hold MS stock, utilizing cash flow or cash on had as a reason. Confuse diapers with UIs.
Even as an insider, I have shunned Tech stocks. Not hard to see who is winning, who is losing being in the middle of it. But, you are contending with the analyst minions who are too lazy to figure out why MS is not P&G. When they figure it out, the bottom falls out, suddenly.
In other words, you are a good driver in a little VW. Wall St analysts are crazy drunks in an 18 wheelers. You may be right, but you will be 'dead right' with your money. We just had a massive pileup on Hwy 5. How many other semis are behind it and not seen? Well, Intel for sure.....
Jimmy Carter may be a 'good' person, but was a terrible President. He set back US foreign policy 20 years. It is unfortunate when someone cannot just accept the past and move on. They need to hire publicists and filmmakers to attempt to recast themselves or attempt to buy future favor. Outragious quotes and publicity stunts seem to be a favorite method these days. Expected for fallen Hollywood bimbo, but distasteful for an ex-President. Oh, and Mr Carter, you can reimburse the US taxpayers for the billions of dollars you spent on a submarine base that no one, including the US Navy, wanted. I am sure you put a stipulation somewhere that it will be named after you when you pass.
Too bad this whole affair is driven by Al Gore's quest for more personal wealth and for university greed from government money. Somewhere, rational thought was buried. Probably in an email chain in the UK....
But, hey, the parties were GREAT!
Fundamental problem is the quality of unionized High School teachers, and the lack of teaching skills for undergrad college Profs. Forget 'intelligence', Nobel Prizes, research money raised, how good at teaching are they?
I managed to get through Engineering at a top ranked public university....even with a mediocre primary education. I worked full time and went to a junior college (community college) for 3 years to save money for university. I think this is the best solution for many wanting a science or engineering education. Why? Because JC profs only teach. No pecking order in tenure tracks, no research grant competition, minimal ego battles with administration. My Calc teacher in JC was a registered Professional Engineer, nearing retirement with an aerospace company. Taught half day, worked in industry half day. Focused on teaching, kept very long office hours. Sometimes, that meant dinner at a fast food place with us slow students. When I finally went to a university, I had a very good grasp of math, despite my 'not being good' at it. Similar situation with English. Prof was editor for newspaper, and would not tolerate sloppy writing. Paid dividends when I went to work. Electronics? x-Navy instructor. Drilled basic circuit analysis into us. We ALL could solder and were wizards with a 'scope. I was amazed at university that most Seniors couldn't solder well, if at all.
East Coasters and rich Libs look down their noses at JCs. But, neither of my kids had Profs at their 'name' schools who taught as well, or cared as much about students as in my JC.
The higher ed system in the US is turning into another form of American Idol. Somewhere along the way, Student Union buildings, research grants, and USA Today rankings replaced quality teaching. Fix that, and the other problems fade away.
Any citizen of a major country that doesn't think ITS government has the equivalent of an NSA is a fool. Euros are the worst, as they cannot keep up with the US and China in industry, so they need to steal secrets. Want espionage? Check out German, Japanese, or French industries. Oh, while we are at it, let's check up on residents with 'funny sounding names'. Might as well check EVERYONE.
What is amusing to me is the turnaround many in Euroland have made regarding Obama. He was the 'second coming' of the Savior, behind Al Gore. Both are fakes, and have embarrassed anyone who talked them up in the past.
I am relatively new to Slashdot. But, I have to wonder how this site full of seemingly smart techies can be so naive. Do you REALLY think that all the hardware, software, storage, and optical networks you all have created would NOT be used in spying? If the NSA and CIA believe it will prevent a terrorist incident, do you think they would NOT use it? And, do you really think that there is some Dr Evil at NSA who is trying to steal your 'rights'?
Snowden will simple tell the world leaders what they already know. US has the ability to watch there every move. Big deal. They are trying their best to watch OUR every move. I remember working with a company in the 80s that sent out security bulletins regularly reminding traveling employees that their hotel rooms in Japan, their Business Class seats on Air France, and probably their private car transport in southeast Asia were bugged. We were not allowed to carry floppy disks and were to keep our laptops with us at all times. And, we were doing simple commercial software, nothing secret. I was at a conference 10 years ago and asked a panel of security experts who were the biggest spies. Answer was CIA, Russians, Chinese military, French chemical, and German industrial companies.
The NSA claims that they look for patterns in data- phone calls, emails, etc. The claim not to be monitoring the vast majority of people. OK, we don't know for sure, but it is clear that if they want to monitor you, they will. And, it is doubtful they care about me or the websites I visit.
Does that bother me? Of course. Why is this done? Evil conspiracy? Manic Billionaire trying to own the world? Simple reason is that no politician wants a terrorist incident on their watch, especially one that has happened before. A shoe bomber will get Government officials fired, as we KNOW about that. A bra bomber, wig bomber, or false teeth bomber will not. THAT is the key reason for all of the espionage. Got to keep that lucrative Government gig long enough to secure a private 'consulting' job. Spend unlimited amounts of other people's money to secure my future. I think this is the REAL answer.
Street protests are soooooo yesterday!
It use to be a big party. Get stoned and yell at 'the man'. Girls loved it because they can find guys who are 'activists'
Then, they were all the loonies who couldn't find jobs, didn't want jobs, or were just tired of being in their mom's basement. Girls when to look and laugh.
Now, it is whiny liberal arts graduates tired of making lattes for a living. Girls don't even show up, lest they get raped by the loonies who are even more so.
Don't like things? Get a job, make some money, contribute to politicians that represent your views.
Theme song is Randy Newman "Its money that matters'

Who went to prison for Chappaquiddick? Oh, I forgot, Ted Kennedy was a Liberal Democrat. Being drunk and killing people is OK.

Would you say that if he was something other than an older white male? If you would, then why not go after Clapper's boss?
