So should Twitter also ban groups labeled as terrorists by other groups ? Eg: should we ban the Israeli government because Hamas thinks that they are terrorising them ? I think not. Twitter would be uniwse to accede to to this and put itself at the center of someone else's fight.
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
This is nice because it tells us that with a large migration to a Linux based desktop saves about 1/3. What does this tell us about the migrations that will follow or are not so big ? Different factors pull in different directions.
* Munich is big enough to demand that correspondents use file formats that they can support - this is more than about LibreOffice
* The cost software rewrites (special bespoke stuff) could be amortised over many users
* The overall project costs (design, IT staff retraining,...) could be amortised over many users
* They are pioneers - those who follow should be able to use their blueprint, avoid the mistakes that Munich made
* They were probably getting large volume license discounts on propietary s/ware, more than smaller organisations would have got, so they saved less
What do you think ? What do you say when a customer asks how much they will save ?
As others have pointed out the main benficiaries of class action law suits are the lawyers -- who make a lot of money out of them.
Many law makers (Parliament/Senate/Congress/...) were lawyers when younger and will remain good friends with those who are still lawyers. They are not going to see their old profession or friends suffer: they will pass legislation to stop these sorts of clauses.
I used to have my printer connected via USB - that no longer works. With some fiddling I was able to print to it via my LAN. I still need a USB connection for the scanner function - so I have 2 different connections for the 2 different things that I do with it.
I accept that in X years time when I buy a PC that does not support ''achaic USB" that I won't be able to use the scanner part - but that is a different issue.
The problem is the dependancies in the RPM - not hard for them to fix. I also needed to put some stuff into udev rules. They seem to provide newer RPMs for new printers, they just have not bothered to maintain them for older ones -- it would not be hard to do.
This has nothing to do with bad/wrong actions by the CentOS guys (CentOS is a recompile of RedHat) - the real issue is Brother not supplying source to their drivers, maybe related to the secret yellow dots.
Complete bullshit. Just because you expect to have to buy something new every few years does not mean that I do. I do not see 8 years as very old.
I understand that manufacturers want you to buy something new to maintain their income stream - but I don't feel obliged to contribute.
Yes - I agree, if you don't support it at least make the source code available.
I recently upgraded from CentOS5 to CentOS6. I have a 4 year old Brother printer/scanner, the RPMs for the drivers would not install (wrong [old] version of glibc & similar). Brother tech support tried to be helpful, but no - it was no longer sold and they would not create new RPMs. With a bit of fiddling I was able to get it to work - but a naive user would not have [I am not being rude about some people].
I will never buy a Brother product again - 4 years is not that old for a bit of hardware; if they don't maintain their drivers I will not take the risk of being left with working but unusable hardware; neither will I support a company that leaves its customers in the lurch.
They should be sued for assault and for damage to his property. This should be paid for by the individuals, not out of RCMP funds - several thousand $ is a lot to individual members of the RCMP, but not to the RCMP as an organisation. Unless there is a penalty for their actions they will not change.
They should then be fired since it is plain that they are not fit to serve in the trusted role that RCMP is.
Doug MacDougall needs to have it explained that someone does not have to do everything that their staff demand, their staff have limits on what they can ask someone to do.
All of us who use whatever came with the Linux distro that we use on our desktop will only count as one download. Figures like this are always misleading.
To ensure that the ad is visible the court also ordered that the text of the ad must not be in a font size smaller than Ariel 14. Apple will have to run the ad on its site for a period of one month.
the court forgot to specify that Apple could not use the same text & background colours!
Apple did win a concession: they were originally ordered to have it on the web site for 6 months, this was reduced to 1 month.
why there are all these sanctions against Iran. OK: I know that the government does not always treat its citizens nicely, but there are plenty of other countries that act in much the same way and they are ignored; they have a nuclear programme, but so have many other countries and some of these other countries have admitted to producing or using bombs (eg USA); they have interfered in other countries and helped to support ''rebels'', but so have others (eg USA, UK).
So if they are not doing worse than other countries including us, then what is it all about ?
I do note that they are sitting on plenty of oil, so are they the next Iraq ? Better ask Cheney I suppose!
Theresa May is to be congratulated for her decision to not extradite Gary
McKinnon to the USA. The real reason that the USA wanted to put him on trial is
because he embarrassed them.
Mr McKinnon did not cause any damage to the Pentagon systems or take really
sensitive information. He got into the Pentagon's computers by guessing passwords,
many that worked were manufacturers' default passwords that had not been
changed. What he did was the equivalent of walking down a street gently twisting
front knobs to find a door that was unlocked.
Setting good passwords is the first thing that anyone with any clue about
security will do. That the passwords were so easy to guess is astounding and
makes me wonder about the quality of Pentagon staff. The claim that he cost them
one million dollars is specious since they should have done this work in the
first place.
The USA should not be castigating him but thanking him for showing them their
poor defenses before someone really malicious broke in.
What Mr McKinnon did was wrong, that is without doubt. But the penalty was too
high; the USA would not have played fair.
I make no comment on Mr McKinnon's condition of aspergers or the report that he
would commit suicide; I do not consider those really relevant to the injustice
that the USA would have done to him - as revenge for showing that their systems
staff at the Pentagon are incompetent idiots.
he didn't break the sound barrier and he didn't beat the longest free fall either. what a fucking asshole. he was 30 mph too slow to break sound and 30 seconds too short on the free fall. what a god damn prick. i never wanna see this dickhead again.
OK: you show us how it should be done. Until then shut up!
As soon as the first to file system goes in place, it will be the end of line for all Open Source projects,
It should not, if something is released Open Source then that will count as ''publication'', ie demonstrable prior art; thus anything that comes after that should not be patentable. The problem is in ''should not'', the patent examiners don't have enough time (and finding something in some Open Source bit of code will take a looong time) and I believe that the patent office is paid by patents granted - so has motivation to grant patents and let people battle it out in court; but court is do stupidly expensive.
Should we also teach Phrenology and every other discredited theory that ever existed?
The problem with "teaching both sides" (besides the fact that there aren't really "two sides") is that there is limited classroom time. Teachers shouldn't have to waste time on "theories" (using that word loosely) that have no evidence supporting them.
I agree that there is not time to teach everything, there is only time for the ''important'' ones. Next question: which theories are important ? You could say those which are/were important in the development of evolution; but I would add to those the wacky ideas that are current in society today -- including creationism/intelligent_design/... Phrenology is not important today, so it needs little (if any) time. I am not advocating teaching the arguments of creationism in a non critical way; its arguments/postulates should be explained and the kids then shown how these do not stand up to observation.
Ditto evolution: show (in a critical and objective way) how it has been largely successful and how small modifications have been needed in the face of new evidence -- which is the scientific way!
You also seem to be assuming that all theories should be given equal classroom time. Give them individually sufficient time so that the kids are able to make an informed decision as to how likely they are to be true. Remember that some kids will be from a creationist background where parents/priests/... will try to undo the insight/learning that they got at school; they
need to be given the tools to rebut the arguments of fantasy; they won't gain them unless enough time is spent in the classroom showing the flaws in the creationist argument.
School education is not just about getting kids through exams, it is about giving them something for life and raising the standards in society as a whole.
Someone modded my comment above 'troll'. I would really like to know why. You might not agree, but how am I trolling ?

With a name like that an announcement on Halloween would have been fun.
I patent drinking a beverage made from roasted beans while surfing the Internet.
Because there is a compuer involved it does not matter that people have been doing the same thing for many years -- you will all owe me.
As others have pointed out the main benficiaries of class action law suits are the lawyers -- who make a lot of money out of them. Cynical ? Moi ?
For anything interesting - enough said.

Take it back - get your money back. It is not functioning as advertised. If you were in the EU you would be able to do this.
they both exposed wrong doing in their organisation.

Ditto. I have also refused freelance work there for the same reason.
would have approved of anyone hacking the tax man!
I set up a web page to capture everything and had an iPhone running iOS6 visit it, but could not see anything that looked like an ID. Anyone any idea?

Mod parent up I wonder who has lent on ICANN to ask for this ? Time for ICANN to be truly independent of any government.
