    If 100% is the maximum load, how are you exceeding it? Unless you are using a higher value as the maximum percentage, your math troubles me.

    The load average is the number of processes waiting to run, quite different from % CPU usage.

    This is not what we would consider to be a customary home occupation.

    So his ''crime'' was to do something slightly different from the rest of the population.

    Then I got to thinking: What is normal, what does Mr average do in his spare time ? Does this mean that anyone who does anything except: watch TV, visit shopping malls or go to the pub is weird and so under suspicion ?

    I think that I'll put my walking boots on and think about it on a long stroll .... drat - that'll put me under the microscope :-)

    No one has much clue as the nature of dark matter in the way that we do about standard matter: What happens when it clumps together, does it get hot ? Does that heat help to counteract gravity ? Without knowing fundemental things like this - how is it possible to do detailed simulations ?

    It would not hurt if NATting firewalls randomised all the outgoing ports, not just for DNS but everything else as well; there are prob other protocols that have similar weaknesses.

    If Larry Godwin is using tax dollars to protect himself from embarassment then his force should investigate him for misuse of public funds, prosecute him and make him pay the bill.

    If the bloggers are leaking information that harms investigations then Larry is doing the right thing; if they are merely critical of Larry then they should be encouraged at their efforts to improve the police service.

    This could cause a Chinese/USA diplomatic incident. The Chinese upset ''because ICANN (a branch of the government of the USA) is exerting unfair control over the Internet''.

    This is one reason why ICANN should be made completely independent of the USA government.

    it's pretty normal for American ranchers to have guns around.

    On the other side of the pond we would regard anyone waving a gun around as very scary and wonder if he was a lunatic. In the UK we keep guns under strict control and at places like licensed competitive rifle ranges. Yes: farmers do have them, but they keep them out of sight. We also have fewer gun related incidents, although an illegal gun culture is unfortunately growing.

    So what do you think does through the typical audio mornon's mind when he views the two catalogue entries:

    Gee I wish that I could afford the real cables, but the wife would kill me. I suppose that I could economise and buy the cheaper cable -- I hope that it won't ruin my setup as the $4 cable on the other page surely would.
    So by putting something outrageously expensive up for sale they can convince idiots to buy stuff that is only stupidly expensive.

    The whole point about open source is that profitability shifts from the vendor to the user --- ie it is the users who increase their profitability, vendors cease to exist or become consultants.

    Not very long ago we would have fallen off our chairs in disbelief at the choice in Linux powered laptops coming on to the market. We are now starting to greet them with ''Oh, another one.''.

    Unfortunately: this hasn't happened yet (in a big way) in the corporate desktop market. That will happen next year -- as I have been predicting for the last 8 years.
