AP exams are even worse than just limiting rural students. Students optimize their GPA by not taking non-AP courses. They won't take band because it is graded, but not honors. They won't take pre-engineering courses since they have not be honors certified. They take study hall instead. ???
I just recently realized I would have finished a few places higher in my HS class if I had dropped band and jazz band... I was apparently not sophisticated enough to think about optimizing my GPA. I like to think I ended up with more scholarships than most of the rest of my class because I was well rounded:-)
I did not realize they were using drivers to lock out capabilities on identical hardware. That is truly shady dealings, IMHO.
They would have to clean-room drivers for the cards if they want to be legal. Even then, it would be sketchy since they don't have specs. And the open source audio driver would never work in Vista I bet. Bad all around.
I have a SoundBlaster Pro somewhere, I bet it still works. If I can find a ISA slot on a mobo...
Why should that be a big problem for Creative? They sell hardware and provide drivers. He made better drivers. If anything, Creative should have taken his drivers and repackaged them as their own. Maybe even compensated him for doing their work for them.
The actions of Creative may have been business motivated. Cripple the hardware so you have to buy new hardware. Bad idea.
As I have said before, MIT is great for research. For undergrads, it is great at putting you in a class with a bunch of smart and powerful kids that will end up running the world. From what I understand, the quality of education for MIT undergrads is the same (or worse) compared to almost any other school. Undergrad education is not their focus, research is.
So go there for grad school. They generally will pay you to go in most disciplines. But you have to be topper of your class with a great record and probably already have some research experience.
I have been a Tivo supporter for years, but I think they are headed down the crapper.
My new TivoHD actually breaks down on occasion and needs a reboot (It loses sound and background colors sometimes).
They have not made switched digital video work (SDV). I can't get half the HD channels in my area because of this.
The PC integration is ok for me, but could be better. They still have yahoo photos listed, and they have been gone for months! Decent PC software would be nice, but I make do.
Ads? Bah. You see them 2 seconds while navigating to a show you watch for half an hour. If they start inserting commercials like OTA TV I am done...
Someone needs to be in the mideast to oppose the Iran theocracy. Replacing a secular dictator with a pro-US secular democracy would be nice long term, if it works out that way...
I can't find it, but somebody patented storage in the door of a refrigerator. That seems obvious, but a true improvement. They had 17 years to exploit the monopoly on refrigerators with door storage.
My wife worked at a paper company. They had patents on how to cut cardboard to make containers (french fry boxes, etc)
Is climate change driven by solar activity or CO2 levels or other or all?
Is humanity responsible for an appreciable amount of the CO2?
At one point I thought hurricanes were going to kill us all and we were blaming global warming. The last two years have been very quiet... You should not extrapolate noisy data.
And remember many wood products are often made in a press for all that composite shelving and furniture. Additionally, think about all the stuff you can make with cardboard. And wood is renewable, for all the hippies out there.
Good idea! I have a Treo 700p that has a SD card in it. You can get days on a battery if you aren't on the phone, and battery replacement is quick and easy. Edit Word,PPT, Excel as well.
Wireless stereo bluetooth for mp3s, and TCMP will play ripped DVDs from your SD card.
I have dropped mine and it works. I did break a screen on my 650...
My amp does HDMI switching, but I may have to bypass it in the future as well. I assume the Tivo HD will put out HDMI and digital audio at the same time... Eventually someone will sell a HDCP removal box and I will be able to stick that between my tivo and amp and I won't have to worry with the black screen of piracy accusal.
While I am complaining... Why doe they have to screw with the audio encoding? It makes my amp switch periodically to a different mode. Usually, commercials cause it. You would think the channel would remaster all the audio so it is in the same format all the time. I guess they slip different tv modes as well (720p 1080i) you would think they would not do that either.
The worst part of HDMI + HDCP for me is the way it is implemented.
They don't do a per session check or even a periodic check. It appears they continually check, and I must have a loose connection between TIVO-Amp-TV so I get a black screen with warning message IN THE MIDDLE OF WATCHING STUFF. and it makes me angry. I touch the cords and restart the amp and it goes away. Sometimes you just power the amp and it goes away.
This makes me want to find some solution to strip HDCP from the stream so I don't have to deal with the problems it causes. I can fix it when it happens, but my three year old just wants to watch tv...
We have had trupes in the past, but I don't think the same story was on the front-page three times... Something to shoot for.
Can we get a class action together for breach of trust? I trusted Lucas not to ruin my childhood...
What if the zombie can send through yahoo / gmail / hotmail / web clients?
Do people still use their ISP for mail?
And why would the ISPs care? More mail = more traffic = more $ (for those not on flat rate) = more profit

But these buttons, they change color on a hover! How could you not love that crazy web 2.0 stuff?
slashdot.org/palm still works if you just want to read a little without any cruft.
Without shoes.
Or clothes.
Except for my tinfoil hat.

Or do what I did and just postdoc there
You must be new here...
I remember seeing the same article on the home page thrice.
Why don't we all submit this again, maybe we can get a trupe!

GWI never really was completed. Iraq fired at planes enforcing the no-fly zone many times before GWII.

WMDs were found in Iraq, "although not of a militarily significant capability" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction
Why invade Iran? There are other options.

Obvious stuff can be patented.
I think by default some icons are difficult to remove. I think removing "recycle bin" takes a registry edit...
Looks like 3 of the 4 charts show temps every month, if I read correctly here: http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/2008/02/19/january-2008-4-sources-say-globally-cooler-in-the-past-12-months/
But how much of the change is anthropomorphic?
Is climate change driven by solar activity or CO2 levels or other or all?
Is humanity responsible for an appreciable amount of the CO2?

But stereolithography can also do stuff you can't make in normal easy routes, like crazy "brain" gears.

Or at least before we switch back to "Igloo effect" hysteria!!!

I was taught about climate change in middle school from a book that managed to have both cooling and warming in it, so I am always skeptical...
Low slashdot id doesn't mean much. They used to give accounts to anyone...
No Asteroids or Space Invaders? I even remember Night Driver, Breakout, Sea Wolf, and Gun Fight. I think I saw a Pong game in an arcade once...
Nostalgia...

And Sam's sells 4 pack 1 GB SD cards for $40.
DVDs are cheaper, but SDs are easier and smaller...

From what I have read about some of the recent thoughts in Physics, a lot of that new theory cannot be tested with a scientific method either...
