AP exams are even worse than just limiting rural students. Students optimize their GPA by not taking non-AP courses. They won't take band because it is graded, but not honors. They won't take pre-engineering courses since they have not be honors certified. They take study hall instead. ???

I just recently realized I would have finished a few places higher in my HS class if I had dropped band and jazz band... I was apparently not sophisticated enough to think about optimizing my GPA. I like to think I ended up with more scholarships than most of the rest of my class because I was well rounded :-)

I did not realize they were using drivers to lock out capabilities on identical hardware. That is truly shady dealings, IMHO.

They would have to clean-room drivers for the cards if they want to be legal. Even then, it would be sketchy since they don't have specs. And the open source audio driver would never work in Vista I bet. Bad all around.

Why should that be a big problem for Creative? They sell hardware and provide drivers. He made better drivers. If anything, Creative should have taken his drivers and repackaged them as their own. Maybe even compensated him for doing their work for them.

The actions of Creative may have been business motivated. Cripple the hardware so you have to buy new hardware. Bad idea.

As I have said before, MIT is great for research. For undergrads, it is great at putting you in a class with a bunch of smart and powerful kids that will end up running the world. From what I understand, the quality of education for MIT undergrads is the same (or worse) compared to almost any other school. Undergrad education is not their focus, research is.

So go there for grad school. They generally will pay you to go in most disciplines. But you have to be topper of your class with a great record and probably already have some research experience.

Eventually someone will sell a HDCP removal box and I will be able to stick that between my tivo and amp and I won't have to worry with the black screen of piracy accusal.

While I am complaining... Why doe they have to screw with the audio encoding? It makes my amp switch periodically to a different mode. Usually, commercials cause it. You would think the channel would remaster all the audio so it is in the same format all the time. I guess they slip different tv modes as well (720p 1080i) you would think they would not do that either.

I touch the cords and restart the amp and it goes away. Sometimes you just power the amp and it goes away.

This makes me want to find some solution to strip HDCP from the stream so I don't have to deal with the problems it causes. I can fix it when it happens, but my three year old just wants to watch tv...
