"Math is hard" is one of my favorite quotes because it is so totally ridiculous. I have to explain it to the students.

I may be crude and crass on occasion, but I even see that that is a crazy product. I can't believe they released it to the public and nobody realized it was a problem. I just wish I could catch one on Ebay.

Things are better now for women I think than three or four decades ago. My mom (math major, former NASA rocket scientist) was told by her father not to pursue graduate degrees, that was for men. I think fewer educators and parents are pushing women away from STEM.

At the same time, I want to cautiously say that men and women ARE different. The president of Harvard said something to this effect and got fired. Biochemistry amazingly does influence things inside your brain. Men and women have different biochemistry AFAIK in general. Maybe we are "wired" differently, but I don't think we are there even scratching the surface on understanding this in its entirety.

From personal experience, I can tell you my daughter is very "clingy" and cries when you leave the room. My son always pushed you away and does not care too much if you are around. Does this mean anything? N=2 so probably not.

From a professional standpoint, I work on research in computers and control (applied math) for chemical engineering systems. This area has very few women present in the research arena. Attending the American Control Meeting (a multi-disciplinary meeting) is probably 90%+ male. Mixing engineering+computing+math+graduate research apparently does not attract a lot of women. Or maybe the researchers in this area drive them all off. I don't know.

I guess eventually they could downgrade the quality of all analog output to the point where it sounds like AM radio, requiring you to have digital speakers. But still, at some point you have to have an electric signal that could be tapped and recorded with minimal effort.

As for video, I can't wait to see someone sell a system capable of capturing 1080p video streams and remain HDCP compliant. I personally hate the HDMI HDCP thing, my cable box periodically and randomly pops up "DVI Cable not valid" messages when watching TV although I spent thousands on the latest HDCP compliant amp and TV, all version 1.2 or above. This angers me greatly to be watching a show and have it go black in the middle. You have to reset your TV, Amp, and Cable box then fast forward to where you were, unless it was live (and you are screwed, you lose). Maybe I get one of the new series III Tivos, but they don't do pay per view or on-demand.

I think the PVR box must be periodically checking the HDCP connection to make sure you did not secretly replace the TV with some sort of non-compliant recorder. You would think if something goes south once in the DRM verification (noise on the line, TV hiccup, Amp issue) they would verify a few times before crapping out your video stream and making me angry.

  6. Re:Already done in Grad Schools and Real World on Higher Tuition For an Engineering Degree · · Score: 1

Academic engineering jobs can be financially competitive with industrial counterparts. Generally, most decent research institutions let you "consult" up to one day a week. That can help make up for the loss in $ or help you start your own business, something you could not do working a straight job at ExxonMobil. The big difference is industrial types usually get great benefits for retirement, and they are on 12 month salary (academics have to find research money to get paid in the summer).

We tried to get "differential tuition" but the upper administration did not want a two tier system. Instead we have "lab fees" that kick a few hundred bucks per student per lab. It really does not make up the difference, but it is a start. Although recently the state started giving an extra scholarship to STEM students (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math).

And you have to reconcile various differences between engineering and humanities. Recently I got promoted. Promotion raise is flat for all faculty. For me, it was like a cost of living increase, while it may be substantial in other disciplines.

And as my CS buddies always point out, starting salary is not the best indicator. Mean ten year out salary is a good indicator, CHE falls off in some cases (but is usually #1 starting).

I love big physics as much as anyone, but I doubt the SSC would have significantly increased publications overall. Sure, they may find out some great fundamental information about the creation of the universe, but overall impact on society would probably be minimal. Unless the SSC could sort out time travel or make some sort of super-duper uber nuke... I doubt that anything practical or useful would come from the SSC (although some of the support technology would be practical and useful, similar to NASA impact).

NSF funding is generally quite difficult to obtain. Researchers often spend most of their time writing proposals. NSF claims high hit rates, but most areas I know of are well under 10% in reality. Assuming you are an average scientist, you have to submit ten proposals to get one funded. Usually that means one or two students for three years. If you double or triple that hit rate, you get more students and typically more publications and results. Even senior folks in my discipline are complaining about NSF hit rates; they had been funded for years and years, but now that had evaporated or diminished.

I did hear a couple of years back that NSF was going to double over the next few years. Hopefully that works out, but they may just spend it all on big physics...

From what I understand of the European systems in general, it is not quite the same. Graduate students in many cases are supported by the state. Money is given directly to the university or the "dean" and then researchers get a portion. This means they can focus more on getting papers out and developing students rather than submitting their 10-15 proposals per year.

I would like to see more industrial support, but industry in general has a much shorter horizon to look at. They want results in 3-6 months in many cases. It may take 3-6 years to get a graduate student to be truly productive. Some researchers do very well with industrial support, but in general it has diminished as well.

And as much as people lament earmarks, they come into play in the academic arena. Often an earmark is not some crazy bridge to nowhere, it is just a line-item specification in a funding bill for something reasonable. "Here DOE, here is a zillion dollars, however you need to spend a million bucks at some school on their favorite research topic." Otherwise, the program managers may just spend all their money however they want, so earmarks can steer money into projects mandated by senators and representatives rather than the government officials. Not ideal necessarily, but not super evil either.
