About a year ago, I picked up a widescreen HDTV-ready projection TV (a Toshiba TW40X81). I have yet to see a true HDTV television show on it, but that's okay...
A HDTV is like a giant VGA monitor. Sure, it doesn't support mega-high resolutions compared to your desktop, but it does support resolutions like 640x480, 720x480, 1920x1080... and its a true, non-interlaced monitor. Forget what you've seen with TV-out cards, this setup looks SWEET.
So buy one. Hook up a PC and play some Quake. Grab an emulator. Be cheeky and buy a Dreamcast, which outputs 640x480 with the VGA box and looks INCREDIBLE. Nintendo is taking the same concept with the Gamecube - HDTV gaming!
Sure, the PS2 doesn't output HDTV, but at least it has games that take advantage of the 16:9 setup.
What's wrong with a porn server? What if a large group of tax payers actually want speedy, local access to large amounts of porn? Are their dollars any less worthy than yours?
I mean, come on... obviously a LARGE amount of people actually WANT porn. They're making PILES of money. They should get together and mandate themselves a few choice porn laws...
> Digital connections (s-video, for instance) are > the only way to go with HDTV.
Svideo is analog, and NTSC. Svga is analog. Its ALL still analog. There are no TVs out there that support digital in, and no receivers that support digital out. NONE. That's the whole problem.
*EVERYTHING* has to be scrapped. Thanks a buttload and all that cruft...
Kinda same thing happened to me back in highschool, a friend of mine got his email account suspended on the old network we had, and I jokingly told him I'd have him back on in a couple days. The teacher overheard me and told me he'd like to see me try.
I found out he didn't really like to see me succeed, though.
Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that new laws can be hidden within seemingly innocent blobs of legalese? Or how about the fact that it happens so often? Ever wonder why they hide it, and who they're hiding it from?
Why is the US government set up to let this happen?
What do you think has been happening since the days of the NES? Nintendo was VERY strict in keeping developers only on their console. They even went to court over this a few times. Nothing new.
Regardless, Square goes where Square wants. Same goes for EA, who have developed N64 games in the meantime. Sure, it sucks for Sega and I feel for them, but its business as usual...
Its a big deal, if you look at why it is important. Sure, you've been able to run linux on IBM laptops for a while now, but the real story is that a major manufacturer is coming out and not only saying 'Yes, you can run linux on these laptops.', but is also saying 'Not only that, but we'll install AND support it for you as fully as we would Windows.'
Choice is good. I can see people ordering it with linux on it 'just to try'. This is a nice-sized step towards getting more linux out there... even if it IS Caldera.:)
I wonder how long until other companies follow IBM's example?
What if Kevin and Adrian said they can work on Doom 3 if they get to fire one person. Would that have been more fair?
There's a difference in being prepared to be fired as a group and being the only person fired. As a group, you rely on all the members being one powerful force.
What makes it worse is that Carmack DOES have the power to do more than just say 'Hey! Don't fire him!' Instead he gets back in line with no more than his.plan file. I was hoping for more from him... maybe not a strike, but *something*.
If Steed was in fact fired because of Carmack and crew were rebelling, and if he really wanted to avoid the political atmosphere of the office, he should leave id. I wouldn't want to work in a place that would fire someone else to get back at me, instead that would say I'm good enough to leave and do some good work somewhere else. (I'd have to watch the ego, though...)
Seriously, take the loyal talent and start somewhere else. This would be the perfect time to leave before getting into the middle of the next project. Sure, it wouldn't be doom, but you know it would be something nifty and fun, right?
It just seems wrong that the people who made id aren't the people who get a say in what it does. There's a whole group of talented people possibly going to go to waste here... who's next to be fired? Who would want to work there based on this kind of display? Isn't it hard to be creative when you're watching your back or fighting just to get your job done?
I just can't imagine sitting at a desk working on Doom 3 and accepting that I got my wish and it only cost one guy his job. That's bad karma, man.
Carmack, you've got the talent to make it work. Do the right thing. A lot of people are looking up to you...
I can see it now. All these CS hackers that have to buy a new copy to get a new wonid when banned can just pay another $9.95 instead. Yay.
Suck it!
Well, the single-player mode still works. Your character is also stored on your own memory card so you won't lose anything.
Hi!
Yes, so you understand his point exactly. How astute!
I know you meant to type 480p.
Flatter than _A_ pancake. Not flatter than _ALL_ pancakes.
I agree. His wife *is* fun to boink in new and exotic places...
You've got it wrong... Intel is working on AMD's 9th generation processor.
Taco is a bitch to corporate sponsorship. He'll bend over for the latest in technology.

Who needs TV? Give me HDTV gaming anyday.
A 'hack' being what DNS was in the first place.
Remember your roots. Don't be so quick to shrug off what the net was built upon for a quick buck.

Can you say Dreamcast? I knew that you could.
2001-03-06 18:31:51 ---- Yo, this is my guess!
(stupid lameness filter, who are YOU to judge my lameness? I demand an open source filter!)

BWAH! I've only purchased *one* Matrox card, a G200. I wanted to use it for OpenGL, which was advertised on the box.
OpenGL didn't properly arrive on the card until just before their next generation came out, and even then it was subpar.
As a result, I bought a TNT1. I've been happy with nvidia ever since.
Sure, Matrox may test extensively, but they certainly didn't bother to finish the job.
Why can't a game be part of someone's daily life?
How is this different than watching TV for hours a night?
Sure, they may seem socially unbalanced, but at least they're being more social than your average couch potato.

*raises hand* *continues playing Quake*
The PSX2 is all about games, and this is why its important to have a fast CPU.
