The PPV and VOD broadcasts are encrypted by Macromedia's technology. In order to decode said broadcasts as cable boxes do, they had to license Macromedia's decoder, or face the wrong side of the DMCA (breaking an effective copy protection scheme). They could either not record PPV or VOD at all, or add this functionality. They chose to add functionality with restrictions.
Copyright law forces them to license functionality from Macrovision, who said they would only license their product to TiVo if they put this functionality in, so to answer your question, copyright law plus contract law says it has to be there. Originally, TiVo said that they would only use it for Video-On-Demand and Pay-Per-View, but a bug popped up last week that put restrictions on some syndicated programming (King of the Hill, Simpsons).
Does anyone else find it hysterical that Zonk thinks his comments are so important that he has to write them up and post them on the front page instead of commenting to an article like everyone else does, including Taco?
It's like duping a story on purpose just so he could have first post!
This guy has a point. At the megacorp where I work, they won't even hire anyone for the help desk (call center) without a BS. Third level analysts require masters degrees for new hires at minimum -- most new hires have multiple masters in various fields. It's no wonder most of our new hires are coming from foriegn universities.
(I know it's unsecure-- not too concerned about that, being the admin & all)
Jabber (in some forms) supports SSL and TLS encryption -- we're using a Jabber server in my department to facilitate communications, and I made damn sure it was encrypted, otherwise the admins with the sniffers would be shutting that server down if they saw what we were saying about them....
If you had RTFA, you would see that this case has nothing to do with IP. Letters surfaced in a different lawsuit which proves beyond a doubt that Bill Gates himself asked Andy Grove not to invest in Go, and that Bill viewed any investment in Go as "Anti-Microsoft", in Billy's own words. Sounds pretty anti-competitive and collusive to me.
Isn't it interesting how people always insist the Founding Fathers were just likey they? Whether they are on the right or the left, people always insist the Framers would be on their side. If you listen to both sides, Washington was a fundamentalist hippie who smoked doobies between church services.
Fine with me. I've been noticing that a lot of Europeans and Aussies have been lamenting about how they can't vote in US elections. The solution? Join the Union! It may be the only way we can balance out the right-wingers in the Congress. Have each state of Australia join the union, and Australia would have 10% of the seats in the Senate by itself!
Woah there! Put down the Kool-Aid, pal. You're still clinging to your Newton, aren't you?
Repeat after me: "Apple is a mindless, soulless corporation that would be just as evil as Microsoft if they had the marketshare. They do not care about me or what I do, so long as I don't 'steal' their intellectual property or post leaked pictures of their new products to the web."
Then again, I just got rid of my IIgs last year...

More info here.
"Arrrgggghhhh", on the other hand, is merely talking like someone who's been hit in the testicles.
You wouldn't write "Arrrgggghhhh", you'd just say it!

Looks like the cops got this before those evil Firefox users could....
this time they're talking about the recall rather than the discovery of the virus
In that case, this story belongs in a slashback, not a new article. Honestly, why Zonk hasn't yet been fired for incompetance is beyond me.

Ahh, yes. Yet another show I always meant to get in to but never had the time...
Thanks!
What video game was that quote from? Crystalis? This is killing me.
My college Senior Project was a Linux-based Domino server implementation. Worked great for me.
Click here to download a trial of Lotus Domino for Linux. Click here for a Notes client for Windows (works on Wine) and Mac.

Maybe part of Utah would do.
Like this part?
You forgot the most beautiful spot on the planet. Of course, it looks terrible here because the satellite took the pic in winter. Doh!
Now, now. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed whom...

No, but you could be!
Didn't someone else do this in the 70's? Oh yeah! Here it is!
Tried this? Looks like it'll power everything from your plane seat without the battery to carry around.

Apparently, you don't get it. See this.
See this.

Of course I know more than one language! There's English, and American, and Australian, and I can get by in Caribbean...
