Not only was it hideously slow, but the search results quite frankly sucked. (I was searching mainly for obscure non techie stuff - something Google still doesn't always handle too well.) For a good while the first page of results on those topics from Google were usually static pages from Yahoo! or other directory sites. It wasn't until about '98 or '99 that Google finally seemed to get it's act together and to start to pull away from the pack.

It wouldn't be the first time - during the Moon Landing episode he claimed, wrongly, that he knew his figurine was Neal Armstrong because "it had Commander's stripes". When in reality the "PR stripes" were added after Apollo 12 because the PR folks couldn't figure out which astronaut was which beneath their virtually identical suits. First, most environmentalists would LOVE to have a better RR system in this country because it would mean there are less cars on the road. Cars are one of the biggest polluters there are: not just the fuel it burns but the tires, metal, energy into manufacturing, the inefficiency of the whole car culture (suburbs etc...) etc.... Most environmental groups are pro-mass transit.

I know most environmental groups are theoretically for building railroads for mass transit. The problem is that most of them are against the inevitable side effects of actually building railroads for mass transit. They want their cake and to eat it too.

The only thing holding up rail is the public's attachment to the automobile: status symbol, complete freedom of where to go, perceived fears of others who ride the train, the fact that we're all spread out in suburbs, etc...

That's four things, not one thing, and not all connected to automobiles either. Typical muddy think.
