Most edonkey users connect with emule, a gpl client for Windows
Please enlighten me: Why do most users use eMule? I heard that it a) has compatibility problems on the ED2K network, and b) is based on an old version of Edonkey (v60?) and does not support Horde. Is this true? I've been staying away from it as I don't want to cause problems on the wonderful network. Plus, Overnet works great.
It sucks that Overnet/eDonkey is becoming popular. That means it will be the next to be shut down by the likes of RIAA/MPAA.:( Overnet rocks.
Fortunately, there is a patch for it, Mozilla is unaffected, and Norton and McAfee (at minimum) seem to detect it. That just leaves the millions of unpatched Windows machines that are running out-dated or low-grade antivirus!
Did you uninstall and delete everything from your previous installation, including your profile?
I always run from the ZIP distro. I deleted my old copy and unzipped the new 1.0PR Firefox-win32.zip, so yes. I didn't delete my profile, however. Kinda sad that would be a requirement.:/
Is it just me, or does this release seem buggier than 0.9.3? I've have it crash a few times in the last few days, and I've noticed a few popups getting through. 0.9.3 worked flawlessly for me. Anyone else noticing problems? I do like the RSS integration, although the new Find dialog I'm still getting used to. Also, they got rid of my alternate stylesheet icon for sites that only have two choices ("No Style" and the default one), so now I have to go to View -> Page Style to get it).:(
Funny how a formerly open source, now proprietary UNIX company uses only Internet Explorer to check their work.:/
Even if IE is your browser of choice (*gasp*), every competant web developer should know the impact and difference between ALT and TITLE tags. Apparently "competant" and "preferring IE" are mutually exclusive...
I just upgraded to Firefox 1.0PR from Firefox 0.9.3. The new find interface (Control-F) takes a bit of getting used to, but it's not too bad. I might eventually even like it. When I visited a site with Flash, it prompted me to install the plugin and provided a wizard to do so. I thought that was a big improvement for novice users (even though it installed version 6 instead of 7). Also, for sites that are RSS-capable, it has a nifty little icon in the lower right-hand corner. If you click it, you can "subscribe" to the RSS link. It then puts an RSS feed in your favorites menu. Very neat. Slashdot even supports it! Doesn't look like the Slashdot rendering bug has been fixed yet, though. Since the Firefox team doesn't seem to care, perhaps the Slashcode authors could a hack to fix this? Yeah, I know you shouldn't have to, but I imagine a great deal of Slashdotters use Fox and it's quite annoying.
For those who don't know, there is a simple hack to fix the Slashdot rendering problem:
1. Create a new button in your "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" called "Fix Slashdot Rendering" or something. 2. For the URL, put this: javascript:document.getElementsByTagName(%2 2body%2 2)[0].style.display='none';document.getElementsByT agName(%22body%22)[0].style.display='block';void(0 );
NOTE: You'll need to remove the extra spaces Slashcode produces.
Anytime Slashdot renders incorrectly, just click this newly created button on your button bar and it will fix it.
Ahhh, but they pay me a lot with excellent benefits to fumble through my job and pretend to the customer like I know WTF I'm doing. Stress = high, pay = high. What can you do...
If I even mention "training" where I work the laughs can be heard clearly from the other side of the planet. Funny how an organization that is so gainst paying for anything is staunchly anti-Open Source.
I get paid a salary at my job in the U.S. One of my coworkers, who qualifies under a different classification for some reason, does roughly the same job but gets paid hourly. I get $2/hour more than him. Granted, he qualifies for overtime, but I get the extra $2/hour without working any overtime. He has to work many extra hours just to make as much as me (2080 extra hours per month, to be exact). If he works more than that, yeah, he comes out ahead, but I'm happier because I get out of that shithole long before he does on an average day.
I don't think this is unique amongst salaried positions. You get paid more because you might have to put in some long weekends...
They need to shut the whole thing down, wait five years, create an interest, an excitement, a hunger for it again.
Giving it a decent time slot would help. I tried for quite some time to watch Enterprise when the series was new, but they kept changing the time slot it played on the local UPN station. I never knew when it was going to play, and got tired of chasing it. So eventually I just downloaded the episodes to watch them, but I eventually got sick of hunting and waiting for the download, so I said to hell with it.
I vote the way I'm told the pope wants me to vote. Am I informed?
I vote for the guy with the hot girls-gone-wild daughters. Am I informed?
Well, that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as the you happen to agree with the Pope on the same issues. If enough people did that, it would be clear that Americans favor religious opinion, and a leader that can provide that is indeed doing the will of the people.
All I'm asking is that if you want to vote the same way as the Pope, that's fine, but please understand why he favors a particular candidate, and do you agree with those reasons? If you do, I feel you are informed. It wouldn't hurt to look at the other candidates as well. (I'm not trying to start a partisan discussion here, just an example). I know a lot of people will vote for Kerry "because he's not Bush". That's an okay start, but most of those people don't have a clue what Kerry stands for. If they did more research, they might decide that Kerry is worse on the issues they care about, in which case they might decide to vote for Bush (being the lesser of the two evils) or perhaps vote for a different candidate.
If you hate Bush, great. Vote for Kerry or one of the other candidates, but please understand why you are voting for someone else and why you think that person would be best for the job. I think instead of pushing "Rock the Vote" we should be pushing "Research the Vote".
If you have your own IT team that can support Linux, Debian would probably be fine. But I think the average PHB would be much more comfortable with the likes of RedHat or SuSE. And does it really matter that much? We're talking servers here, right? What does it matter which distro you're using? I would think support would be more important.
Plus, apt is available for RedHat and works most excellently.

It doesn't matter why they register. It doesn't matter why they vote. It matters that they do register and vote... Vote early, vote often.
I disagree. I think voting is important, but I think it's more important that you have an informed vote. I know so many people that are voting for a particular candidate because "he's not Bush". Well, that's fine, but when you start pressing them for opinions on some of the major issues, their answer is almost invariably, "Well, I don't know, but at least he's not Bush." I don't really care who you vote for. Kerry, Bush, someone else. Doesn't matter. But I think it's destructive to society to vote for someone based on how many billboards you see on the way to work. You don't have to vote for the candidate that I personally like - just do a little damn research before voting or please don't vote at all. That is all.
Agreed. The only reason I keep a floppy around is for my RAID driver. Why does Windows XP still require a floppy for a third-party RAID driver?! I haven't used a floppy for anything else in ages.
And what's so bad with Wal*Mart coming in to a small town? You don't like new jobs in a small town?... To complain that Wal*Mart doesn't give Ed's Groceries a chance is ridiculous.
Sweet! Now Ed can trade his family-owned grocery that made him enough to make ends meat for a
Early bird gets the worm. Small business is risky. It's life. You move on.
Monopolies hurt everyone (except the shareholder), not just the small business owner.
On another note, why are there users here writing Wal*Mart's name as "WalM*rt"?
I was wondering the same thing! I thought perhaps Walmart had become a swear in certain areas, like Canada or something. You know, "sh*t" is so much less offensive than "shit".
Not only that, but if you've ever looked up at a Walmart, you'll notice they have about a 1:1 ratio of black bubbles to checkout lanes. I'd dare to say every square inch of the store is under surveillance. The database should give them a time the card was used and at which register. They'd just need to find a camera that was pointing in that vicinity.
Although I agree that they shouldn't harrass third parties like yourself, I see no problem going to great lengths to annoy the deadbeat and put the heat on him/her at work. They're really stealing from their creditors - they agreed to make payments for some sort of property, which they are not. They took something and aren't paying for it. Stealing.
Don't like how creditors treat you? PAY YOUR FUCKING BILLS.
Again, I agree calling you, the neighbor was going too far. But as far as harrassing the deadbeat, no holds barred (within the confines of the law).
It would be nice if we could switch away from totally unverified financial transactions like the current credit card systems, and start using something that at least requires a PIN.
Perhaps this is an area where the likes of third-party merchant services such as 2checkout.com, Paysystems, and iBill can really shine. Ignoring the problems these specific merchant services have had, the model of passing the user to a secure page provided by a "trusted" company to enter credit card details could be a good marketing gimmick.
Let's say you're shopping at <insert your favorite pricewatch merchant here>. You're tempted to make a purchase because their price is so much lower that your usualy merchant of choice. Would you prefer to enter transaction details directly on their web site and trust them to store your information in a secure way, or would you prefer a system where you are passed to visa.com or citibank.com to enter the transaction details, which are never given to the merchant, just a check in the mail every 2-4 weeks?
Just like how web sites plug their SSL cert seals with a verification image and link ("Secured with Thawte 128-bit encrypted - click here to verify"), perhaps the site could advertise something like, "For your protection, we do not store your credit card information anywhere on our servers. You will be passed to a secure page at Citibank.com and your transaction details will not be viewable by anyone but you. Click here to verify our partnership with Citibank.com". Okay, that sounds lame, but you get the idea. To me, it's reassuring that my transaction is being handled by a company whose best interest is in avoiding fraud versus passing them to a1discount-computer-parts.biz or whatever to store them as cleartext in their MySQL database...
Now that's a celebrity death match I'd like to see. Tag team: Gates and Balmer in one corner, Rosen and Bainwol in the other. They'll have to find other ways to fight dirty since hitting below the belt will likely have little effect, except maybe with Rosen.:P
Oh, and by the way, Islam is NOT a religion. I don't know of any other religion in the world that says it's okay to cut off people's heads and fly planes of innocent people (who are not soldiers) into a building full of more civilians.
Islam is a reason for crazy morons to blame their sociopathic behavior on someone/thing else. God told me to do it!
I'm not aware of another religion that is so violent, teaches you to hate everyone that is no like you, and treats women like dog shit as much as Islam. I am atheist, but at least Christianity teaches foregiveness and love (except for Catholocism, which only teaches fear and okays criminal behavior, like Islam).
No, you'd just have to change the Windows. The hardware would still be okay. :P
Isn't this a disincentive for people to use eMule, assuming Overnet/eDonkey lets you leech more than eMule?

In other news, Microsoft has a Chief Linux Strategist!
Same with Google's Picasa.
