Well if you compare phones - there's nothing stopping you from using any ad provider you want on Symbian/Blackberry or Android. Yes Apple could port their framework to any of those platforms and compete there.
I really have no idea about gaming consoles. I agree that they are pretty anti-competitive as well... I doubt Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo has rules about in game ads though - I see them all the time - I don't think they are served up via any framework though.
Windows is difficult to install? Do you drag your knuckles along the ground too? Its the only one on that list that actually goes out to a 3rd party driver repository to find drivers for my computer to make things work properly. Failing that it pops up notifications with links where I can get device drivers for my scanner or webcam or whatever.
Sorry but there are Linux installers out there still that don't work on my display adapter (Ubuntu on my Shuttle PC - works on the VGA port, but not the HDMI port...), can't figure out what kind of keyboard you have and most make zero effort to figure out if your scanner, network adapter or 3D video card are functioning at all. Windows 7 installed seamlessly on the same machine.
Solaris - I'll give that it works pretty well for actually getting it on the machine. Never mind when you have it installed and NOTHING WORKS properly without installing a lot of hotfixes/patches etc etc. Seriously - I think we should be beyond the problem that when I hit the backspace key - it should back up over the text I typed. Last I checked - that doesn't work out of the box in Solaris 10 in all apps. Heaven help you if you want to install Solaris X86 on anything but the exact specified hardware - I admit I haven't done that in ages, but last time it was a real pita.
Mac OSX Leopard wouldn't install on my G4 Powerbook - it claimed that I didn't meet the requirements (I more than did). The Apple tech told me I probably had 3rd party memory in the machine (which I did!) and it wouldn't install because of that. I has to use an openfirmware hack to make it install at all... That's bull-crap.
I run a bunch of labs at a local community college however - 200 misc dell Optiplex machines. Some are over 5+ years old (Optiplex 520). Windows 7 installed and runs like a top on every single one of them without me tweaking anything and they all support Aero - and Microsoft's image toolkit made it relatively easy to customize the installer.
I actually like how Android works, and for plenty of my friends its the first smart phone they've ever had.
The fact that Android in general presentation comes off as pretty polished (it has a functioning app store, a bunch of choices to download music and videos etc) smooth environment certainly helps.
I have a Plantronics Backbeat that also doubles as a set of headphones that works pretty well too on my Nexus One (does a really good job of canceling noise). The cool thing about the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One (for those who don't know) is split noise canceling microphones in case you forgot your headset or the batteries for it are dead - with the phone alone (on my N1 at least) I can stand in a data center and on the other end the person you're talking too wouldn't believe you were in a data center.
You could develop an application easily enough that was touch friendly, fit on the screen properly etc for a smartphone. I can honestly see this sort of thing being used in the enterprise.
Are you talking about enforcer? That really was more of a developer tool - chances are if enforcer kicked in you could either (try to) debug or reboot because at that point the app was unusable, and so was the rest of the machine (especially if enforcer kept looping).
There really aren't first to the really high rez phone business though - my nexus one's amoled screen is about as high rez as the new iPhone's display.
Isn't it? I can't download the official spec anywhere - so it isn't open. I have to sign a license agreement and pay a fee to use it or ship products with it.
I had this capability on my Nokia N95 - and it was even supported in apps like Qik, but I never used because webcams for me at least aren't all that useful unless its a meeting or something - and even then its really not essential. I honestly don't need to know what my customers look like:), and I know what my friends look like.
Most people don't want to watch their kids/cat/whatever in realtime I'm guessing either - otherwise youtube wouldn't be nearly as popular.
From the specs its only slightly higher ppi/resolution than the Nexus One (I think the incredible has the same screen). The incredible camera isn't bad either - its far better than the current iPhone, but who knows with the new one.
Still nexus one at least has all the nifty new features the iPhone 4 has - noise canceling mics (that actually does work!), 6 axis accelerometer/sensors etc etc.
Its a strange phenomenon, but in working with Indian support and software engineers I found many had PhD's in a variety of different fields, but I honestly wonder how much they actually learned in getting these degrees when trying to get them to talk about their field of study.
They kinda do force you to use Google search - switching search providers (unlike IE or Firefox) in Chrome is a major inconvenience (it involves digging through menus and dialogue boxes). Firefox/IE its a matter of pointing and clicking. I like Google search, but I also want to directly search sites like Wikipedia and WoW Head and it won't let me do that.

That example seems greatly exaggerated. My N1 doesn't seem to do that, and its even a rev 2 model (EPE54B).

At any rate I wouldn't call it memory protection.

Must resist gay jokes...
You know whats hilarious is the current ipod has wireless and more space than a nomad ;).
So does the Motorola Droid :).

Sounds proprietary to me.

No - the obscene profits companies make would have to go down if things were made in America - that is all this is about.
Those 75$ nike's cost a dollar to make...
I think its dieing off though - its been a long time since I handed out leaflets at the airport.

Haven't read the article yet - so I wonder if this affects stock android phones. The default setting for android is not to install anything unsigned.
One click vs. 3-4 clicks to change the search provider?
I know that - I said the option was buried and you back up that fact.
So how do I switch search providers on the fly - like in one click like I can on Firefox?
So how do I switch search providers on the fly?
Which is odd because my 1 GHz Powerbook G4 plays flash stuff just fine. It does use all the CPU, but choppy it is not.
Ahh would it scale? Thats one cool thing about vector animations though - they look wonderful on a small screen or a really really large screen.
That's my point - you can check for conditions and act accordingly :).
