An Ivy League institution is not allowed to give merit-based aid or an atheletic scholarship.
Brown got caught a few years ago giving scholarships to the football players and they were stripped of the title and also weren't allowed to win the title for a few years.
What are you talking about? Cornell's Lynah Ice Hockey Rink was voted one of the 25 greatest college arenas in the world according to Sports Illustrated.
When Harvard comes to play, I remember how awful teh Cornellians can get. They literally have an entire show scripted, including throwing fish on the ice (because of the fishermen by the bay.)
The rivarly is intense between Cornell and Harvard (although it's obviously alot more one-sided except for Hockey where Cornell and Harvard constantly compete for 1st place in the Ivies and Top 5 in the country.)
Cornell kids (especially the engineers) really don't have time to drink, they are so overworked compared to the crimson and elis.
Wow... time to stop the troll that probably doesn't realize he is a troll... ok, here we goooo!
Uhh, I didn't say ISA or Nubus or whateverthehellyoucallit is _better_, just that anyone with legacy cards gets screwed with a Mac, whereas with a PC, anyone with a little clue can save a couple of bucks on a soundcard, printer port, serial port, or even a SCSI board for a scanner if they get a Mobo with an ISA slot.
Cough Cough... so basically you're pissed off that the mac doesn't allow you to use your old 2 Meg Matrox Millennium card and Adlib soundcard the way a PC does right?
First of all, all macs nowadays come with PCI on the motherboard. I'm sorry, ISA is a dead technology and one I don't really think we should be clinging on to. Extending your logic, do you think modern PCs should have support for Cassette data tapes? The PowerMac uses IDE and PCI and AGP, what more do you want? Commodore 64 Expansion Card support?
>And to top it off, today's Macs ARE PowerPC, dumbass.
Well, fuck you very much. I'm obviously no Mac afficando, but I do know I have better manners than you.
Ok you're right, he was obnoxious but he did effectively shut you up and immediately destroy a significant part of your argument.
>If you need a serial port, you can get an adapter.
Which won't work for my applications. And won't work with (albeit outdated) older software.
Not to mention that the older busses, such as ISA are just so much simpler to hack with.
First of all to part one, the adapter works natively in all applications on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. Sure it doesn't work on your 1986 copy of Excel 1.0, but once again, I don't think that's much of an issue. It works with ALL mac software made post 1996. And the ISA comment, I won't even go there it's so ignorant.
Well, you really don't need to guess. By all reason, if you were to cut out artists from the equation, Mac is dead.
You mean the HUGE digital video market? You mean the HUGE post production market? Ever heard of Final Cut Pro and how it's completely eroding AVID's market share (do you even know who Avid is?) Not to mention the XServes that are flying off the shelf because they are incredible 1U servers, which you obviously haven't even read the tech specs of (but nah, rhetoric always beats facts right?)
Oh, and companies like intel don't lie about the performance of their computers (well, in the case of PCs, CPUs) whereas Apple prefers to do the next best thing to lying -- finding one or two applications that are faster on your computer (mostly because they were designed on your computer) and say your entire computer is the best on earth.
Right, and companies like ATI fix benchmarks so when they see "quake2.exe" they perform 20% faster. Frankly those two apps are used (Final Cut and Photoshop) because that's what a HUGE mac audience looks for. No offense, but unless you want to play Unreal Tournament 2003 at 1600x1280 at 200fps (which is what ALL pc benchmarks perform to) you don't really need to care about benchmarks as much as how well the machine works. (GASP, what a concept!)
Blech. Keep those overgrown (and damn HOT) plastic tissue boxes away from me. Give me a computer with quality RF sheilding and a proper heat extraction system anyday. Not to mention I prefer to buy a decent monitor and speakers for even my cheap systems. And not to mention that a majority of non-geeks I know like to have a good monitor and speakers. I thought we gave up on built in monitors during the TRS-80 and PET days?
Ok, two points that highlight your innane cluelessness. Ever compared the heat disappation of a PowerPC to an intel or AMD processor? Probably not. Ever seen a completely fanless fully loaded AMD Athlon? You know the Athlon melts in 7 seconds without a heatsink right? (I did that once by accident, but got it replaced) There is one apple machine with a fan right now, and it's the PowerMac. They're beautiful, QUIET, machines. Have you ever even SEEN an apple machine (or at least heard one?)
The other point, have you ever seen the iMac screen or any Apple flat screen? I mean, these screens are used by major print houses because of their color accuracy. I stare at one of those "AMAZING SGI wide screen" monitors all day at work, one of those "AMAZING DELL 17" digital" flat screens at college and NONE match the viewing angle, color accuracy and refresh of the apple monitors. Read any review and you'll see the exact same thing.
And yes, I know you can buy Macs without built in monitors, I just think its insane that it often costs more to get one without a monitor than with!]
Wow, you didn't have on REAL point in the whole post. You can get a lowend powermac (without monitor) for less than the iMac.
How about doing some actual RESEARCH before posting? Maybe, just go to the apple site at least once instead of feeding off of your preconcieved blatantly biased notions?
But why throw out the entire PC when all you need to replace is the graphics card? Or sound card or even processor? Surely one of the key things about having modular PC's on a tight budget(or even a reasonably generous one at that) is that you can do incremental upgrades to various system components - which although being more expensive in the longer term, allows you to see the benefits of upgrading in the shorter term.
What are you refering to here? The costs related to just upgrading the video card to upgrading a console?
Let's see, upgrading from one console to the other "next-big-hot-thing" costs about $200-$300. Upgrading from one video card to the other "next-big-hot-thing" costs about $300-$400. Where's the cost savings?
And you dont necessarily have to throw away your old GFX card. Used PC components and consoles have a pretty good used parts market. I let many of my old components go that way if I dont distribute them in my other machines. Though I have hung on to my old consoles.
Your video card is COMPLETELY useless without another computer to plug into. The XBox isn't useless just because you get a new console. The XBox doesn't have to be thrown out when you get an XBox2, just like I didn't throw out my N64 when I got the gamecube. Oh yea, and the used Console market is very very very good (better than the used pc components market.)
Most of Salon's expensives come from actually paying well-respected and well-written authors.
Writers (professional writers, which you are clearly are not) do not work for free. Good writers (which Salon has in arguably larger numbers than ANY other news-op-ed-online-only publication) are very very expensive.
So it's more likely than not, not about location, or about offices or management. It's about paying the writers for the great thought-provoking content (when have you noticed a grammar or spelling error on Salon?) and bandwidth, in that order of cost.
You can't do this on mass produced CDs for two reasons:
1) Mass produced CDs are pressed, not burned. So I don't even know if this process will work for a pressed CD which uses a different authoring process.
2) Even if this was possibile in that regard. Having a unique CD key pressed onto each CD would result in creating n templates (where n=number of cds pressed) which is too expensive to be useful. This is sorta the same reason as to why we see CD Keys on cd cases, but never printed onto the front label side of the cd.
I love my PocketPC machine, and the fact that Palm has basically conceded that a serious OS that does more than appointment management is needed, shows just how ahead of the game MS really was in this whole battle.
Not to mention the fact that everyone HAS to upgrade their PDAs to get the new OS and that was something that Palm constantly brought up as an ANTI-PocketPC issue (the ARM vs MIPS pocketpc issue of a few years ago.) Hell, it's still on their graph. Nowadays though, MS users are having the last laugh, considering they can upgrade their PDA's OS without buying a new machine.
Palm really has dropped the ball... hopefully, this will signal a change in their stragety and they'll start to actually make money of their devices (since only Sony and Handspring seem to be pulling profit from the palmos.)
The difference between Blockbuster and this place is that Blockbuster got permission from the intellectual property owners for the tapes they rent.
The better comparison would be between the jewelry shop on 51st and 5th vs the guy on the corner in Times Square selling jewelry. One is clearly legal, whereas the other isn't.
Basically, WHENEVER there is a TIVO/ReplayTV device story on/., about a quarter of the posts are "Let's make our own!" posts. Yet, there are NO viable alternatives out there. Yes, alternatives exist, but none are as user friendly or work across as varied a user base as the Tivo or ReplayTV.
Sure, if I lived in Europe and had satellite television I'd be set with a DBS setup. Sure if I had a direct tuner on my tv (not a cable box) I'd be set.
But NOT one project I've seen (including the Linux VCR, the Linux-Tivo thing on/. before, etc) has found a way to change the channels on the CABLE box when you want to watch something else. This is something so incredibly obvious, and ridiculously needed to get ANY decent functionality on 90% of the televisions in the US, yet NOT one project supports this. TIVO and ReplayTV both have support by placing these little emitters above the cable box that sends the correct IR codes when a channel change is needed.
Simply, you can't use the built-in TV tuner for most analog cable hookups and ALL digital cable hookups.
Does ANY project do this? I'm working on coding my own using the TiVo emitters, but I really don't want to duplicate work.
All I have to say is Luigi's Castle... oh wait, that really sucked. (Especially compared to Halo)
And I wouldn't hold my breathe for the new Mario (Mario walks around with a water cannon trying to remove graffiti (??)) or the new Super Cartoony Zelda, or the first person Metroid (that is just capitalizing on Halo and the FPS craze.)
I'm sorry, I'd rather be playing the new World Series Baseball, Halo, Spiderman (on the best of the multi-console translations), the new Toe Jam & Earl game (how many of you remember that old Genesis game,) NFL Fever, Midtown Madness 3, Max Payne (I'm sorry, the game is DESIGNED for a control pad, not keyboard+mouse,) Morrowind, Project Ego, POW, etc etc etc.
Yes Yes, the PS2 has great games too (although it has games like Britney's Dance Beat too) and so does the gamecube (currently, all three of them.) But the only reason everyone is trashin the xbox is because it's from microsoft.
I mean, come on... I'm hearing comments like "It's too fucking big." WHO THE FUCK CARES? If it plays games better than any other system than who cares if it's about 15% bigger than the PS2? My tivo is fucking huge but I don't complain about it's size when I talk about functionality. A comment like that has no basis other than resentment and bias against Microsoft (oh, and the US too since apparently that's a US-only design trait.)
The XBox is a great system with great games. So is the PS2 and so is the GC. Less anti-microsoft, anti-us rhetoric... oh wait, this is/., home of the RIAA/MPAA/Adobe/GPL/XBOX/European hypocrites.
Apparently G4, the gaming channel is only going to be avalible for Comcast out of the box. However, go to the g4tv website and if you wade through all the flash you can write an EMAIL to your provider demanding G4.
With digital cable and DSS providers and their excessive channel capacitiy, all that needs to be done is have your voice heard and I'm sure we'll get it everywhere soon. Use the/. effect for good!:)
Sega found that out the hard way. It's all about staying power and the games that will come out.
Remember, the PS2 is already starting it's third generation of games, whereas both the X-Box and GC are starting to hit the second wave. Comparing first generation waves of both systems, I'd say the PS2 had NO killer apps (Grand Turismo is arguably the first real killer app for the PS2) whereas the Xbox came out of the door with one (Halo, which is arguably the best console game released to this day) and Nintendo had Rebel Assault.)
The second XBox wave promises tons of games on my "to-buy list" including exclusives like Spiderman, World Series Baseball 2K2, Crazy Taxi 3, Morrowind (coming to the PC too), the Matrix, MGSX, and ToeJam & Earl.
So the second xbox wave looks very good. The second GC wave also looks very good (a new mario, a new zelda, a new metroid and the resident evil remakes.)
Finally, everyone expected the X-Box to bomb in Japan. It's the first time a non-japanese company is actually making a console, and the Japanese hvae a strong tendency to be loyal to products produced in their country by their mega-corps. Look at car penetration stats for the country and it'll prove my point right away.
Besides, as ALWAYS has been the case (why don't analysts EVER remember?) it's not over till it's over. Remember how dominant the Genesis was even AFTER the SNES was out for a year? Remember who won that one?
That would be a great test of the GPL actually, considering it's never been actually tested legally. Remember that.
If something like that were to happen, I'd imagine that the GPL would probably be killed in court by high powered lawyers from all the major software companies (not just MS.)
The nice thing about this capital project, is it may be the first major capital project that is on schedule. Compared to the Big Dig in Boston, the NYC water project is remarkably on schedule, and is even arguably ahead of schedule.
I can't even imagine what the city will do when this project will be done... they'll be a serious amount of money freed up for more capital projects. Perhaps sinking the west side highway from canal to the brooklyn/battery tunnel and creating another central park-type area? The idea's been batted around since the 80s. Hmm... Gotta say, nothing seems to keep NYC down.
I'm glad that the cynicism of/. did not pan out for those show. Naturally/.ers will jump up and down and go ga-ga over a fucking star wars trailer (naturally 2 stories in 3 hours regarding 2 minutes of star wars is what/. is all about)
So to recap. No, the commercials mentioned earlier were not commercials... they were tributes to public service professionals.
No, there was not one mention of Osama or the Taliban or the US's war against terror. NONE. ZIP. ZILCH. It never made statements such as "Who cares about all the other world's history?"
And, yes... after watching it... I will now pass judgment on it. I found it to be incredibly important, and yes... I believe it added an entirely new element to what happened on 9|11. Naturally all the/.ers on here decided to completely condemn the special without even knowing what it was about, what it would show, and even how the sponsors would handle it.
<sarcasm>But wait... why bother? We got to see 30 seconds of Natalie Portman. Right? I am... all this was was the planes going in again and out of the towers for 2 hours </sarcasm> Gotta love/. cynicism.
Unlike images of the plane going into the towers, which we've all seen millions of times, this camcordered footage captures more subtle images. Every screening review I've read calls it poignant, and says something will be gained from viewing. Infact newsweek, which is even affialiated with a rival network, claims it is "time well spent"
To take your point further, there has been tons of literature, movies and information published about the holocaust and World War 2, but does that invalidate Schindler's List as something to watch, since "it is like slowing down to watch an auto accident?"
But am I the only/.'er that will miss this "commercial" on TV, so I can watch the 9|11 CBS special with the camcorder footage inside the world trade center on the 11th? It's commercial-free for two hours, and I think it's going to be a much more meaningful way of spending time with TV tonight(I mean, aren't we the ones that always trashes TV for the "lame" sitcoms and "stupid" filler, that's always on?)
The article says "BT is determined to prove that a patent lodged with the US patent office back in 1980". That's 22 years ago. Doesn't that mean it's already expired even if it were valid (which I doubt)?
Nothing pisses me off more on/. than people who don't read the article. Hell, I'd expect better from someone with a UID > 20000.
From the actual article, (you know... what you didn't read)... "The UK patent has already expired so ISPs in the UK would escape having to pay anything. But in the US, the patent does not expire until 2006. "
Also, to answer your second question (which is also IN the article you didn't read,) BT used to be a part of the Post Office, but it no longer is so.
Yes, this is going to burn my karma but I am very upset about it being rejected from slashdot.
Fuckedcompany has just leaked a memo sent out that said Loki has gone out of business. It's on Linuxgames too. Yep, LOKI is out of business. I can't BELIEVE/. rejected this story. What is wrong with it lately? I really want to talk about this! Doesn't everyone else want to, too?
1) I wonder how likely is it that the DoS attacks were an excuse to find a reason other than the "we're really not profitable anymore thanks to big national ISPs" reason for bankruptcy (which is why lots of ISPs are going under lately.) I hate to say it, but after hearing all these companies blame the 9-11 attacks on going bankrupt, I've grown a bit cynical. I really wouldn't be surprised to find out that Could 9 was financially hurting already (regardless of their claim that they weren't.) The DoS attacks allow them to make a nice "good guy being bullied" exit.
2) This is awful news for other ISPs, since this will give the script kiddies incentive to do it again. Not only did you get an ISP to shut down ("Wow, isn't that cool" must be running through their heads) but they also got featured on/. This will just embolden these kiddies to do it again. sigh
3) (yep, one more just came to me) Can you say serious implications for the future of Corporate Espionage?
Name recognition is really important! Especially when generic versions of a product are called by their corporate name. You know, whenever I go to make a photocopy, I always run into people telling me they are going to make a "Xerox" or "Xeroxing papers."
I guess Xerox must be doing real well... oh, wait... Maybe not.

I'm glad that the cynicism of /. did not pan out for those show. Naturally /.ers will jump up and down and go ga-ga over a fucking star wars trailer (naturally 2 stories in 3 hours regarding 2 minutes of star wars is what /. is all about)
/.ers on here decided to completely condemn the special without even knowing what it was about, what it would show, and even how the sponsors would handle it.
/. cynicism.
Naturally all the
<sarcasm>But wait... why bother? We got to see 30 seconds of Natalie Portman. Right? I am... all this was was the planes going in again and out of the towers for 2 hours </sarcasm> Gotta love
But am I the only /.'er that will miss this "commercial" on TV, so I can watch the 9|11 CBS special with the camcorder footage inside the world trade center on the 11th? It's commercial-free for two hours, and I think it's going to be a much more meaningful way of spending time with TV tonight(I mean, aren't we the ones that always trashes TV for the "lame" sitcoms and "stupid" filler, that's always on?)
A cell phone requiring daily recharge is simply inacceptable in this day and age.
I've discovered in this economy it's actually: a human being requiring daily recharge is simply inacceptable in this day and age.
The article says "BT is determined to prove that a patent lodged with the US patent office back in 1980". That's 22 years ago. Doesn't that mean it's already expired even if it were valid (which I doubt)?
/. than people who don't read the article. Hell, I'd expect better from someone with a UID > 20000.
Nothing pisses me off more on
From the actual article, (you know... what you didn't read)...
I can't BELIEVE /. rejected this story.
/. This will just embolden these kiddies to do it again. sigh
2) This is awful news for other ISPs, since this will give the script kiddies incentive to do it again. Not only did you get an ISP to shut down ("Wow, isn't that cool" must be running through their heads) but they also got featured on
3) (yep, one more just came to me) Can you say serious implications for the future of Corporate Espionage?
Name recognition is really important! Especially when generic versions of a product are called by their corporate name. You know, whenever I go to make a photocopy, I always run into people telling me they are going to make a "Xerox" or "Xeroxing papers."
I guess Xerox must be doing real well... oh, wait... Maybe not.
