This again is misinformation. Across the Linux distros last year there were 3x as many security related patches than MS. Ya ya, you can say all you want about it being multiple distros, but then again if there was a standard among all the developers in Linux as there is in MS products then there would be nearly as many problems and patches! Point being, Linux comunity does no better at fixing bugs than MS and certainly programs no better than MS. MY last experience with Linux as a desktop ended with me re-installing XP due to the bugs in linux, most of them user interface and application crashes. Linux is great as a server but, unless things have changed dramatically in a year I will stick with my STABLE XP Pro.

Once again the Slashdot community is spreading propaganda and misinformation. Longhorn IS NOT being designed to FORCE a user to patch automatically. It will be the DEFAULT option, which can be turned off. Much like the speed governor on a vehicle, this is for YOUR safety and can be removed (albeit I dont recommend removing the governor if you have one installed as it will void your warranty). It will also help to prevent NON-literate PC users from infecting the world.

I would bet this offer borders on illegal... depending on who the source of finacial backing is, this could be considered anti-competitive. My money is on the fact that this IS someone involved in the industry who would love nothing more than to start paying off schools to make the switch. This reminds me of the auto-body paint industry. Often dealers will pay off the shop owners/foremen with cash to get them to buy supplies from them and not competing paint/supplies dealers. Highly illegal, except who's telling?

I agree with somethingwicked. /. users always have a negative opinion of something if it doesn't fall within their realm of favortism... Overall, the way I see it, is that if its MS its bad. Otherwise it's good. If it's an original idea then people with slam it and say it won't work... even though MS has proven you wrong time and time again. But if they use an idea which has worked across other OS for ages, and use it to improve the OS, they are STEALING IDEAS, oooohhhh (not that the Linux community hasn't stolen their share of ideas..., heh, they are trying to make Linux more like Windows as we speak, to attract more desktop users!) Sometimes there is no making people happy. Hell, at this point it won't matter what Billy does, you guys will hate him anyway. Which makes Bill my hero. Bill doesn't care what you think about him, just as long as you keep using his products, which you will. Bill wins. I wanna be like Mr. Gates. Seriously.

Except ya'll forgot one thing: MS sales increase almost every single year..... can't be dropping too much :) The last 2 years are NOT a guideline to judge by, otherwise I will tell you that EVERY MAJOR BUSINESS in the world is failing and will be gone soon... let's be smart about this: MS market cap is far higher than any other company who supplies the same products as MS... I do not ever see that dropping rapidly, because if it does, you can be sure the technology industry itself is in danger of collapsing. Dollar for dollar, my money is still on Microsoft.

  20. Fair and Honest assesment on Microsoft: 2003 and Beyond · · Score: 1, Interesting

This may appear to be flamebait but it is not intended to be so. I feel this is a fair and honest assesment of this article. While the author seems to be knowledgable and very up-to-date on his topics, he is extremely biased. The author's viewpoints on Microsoft are taken straight from the typical Open Source and UNIX community and is obviously not an unbiased assesment of Microsoft. This lends to the incredibility of the author from the start. The author's review of open source work is also biased, not explaining that MANY businesses refuse to adopt UNIX/Linux and open source due to the obvious problems associated with doing so (let's not debate this, as there ARE many advantages to open source, but we could start with the lack of AFFORDABLE & QUALIFIED programmers to develop and customize open source apps for small and medium businesses). Additionally the rest of the article points out things that many of us know, and some of his assesments are completely inaccurate... PC's dead? Well folks I don't know about you but I plan on buying PCs for many years to come. If anyone believes for one minute that the PC industry will die all together leaving it to whitebox manufacturers then you are smoking silly putty. The entire PC industry in analogous to the automobile industry and people need to compare the two to understand how the PC industry will turn out. Overall, I am very unimpressed with this review as I believe it is propaganda for this man to sell his solutions.
