You can get 4 packs of AA NiMH batteries for under $10, and usually find a 1 hour charger and a 4 pack for under $20... that's for the 2200mAH batteries. If you look more, you can probably get nimh's for maybe 1.5 - 2x the price of name brand alkaline AA's. The initial cost isn't that much anymore.
Good, I'll stick with my CRT. Some guy in the future will prove that the flourescent lights used for backlighting the LCD's will give you brain cancer.
Hillary, becoming... a conservative? If she's a conservative then Bill Gates will stop selling Windows soon, and just give it away.
Have you ever noticed that hillary is just moving all around, buddying up with whoever she thinks will get her into the white house? Her political stance is... well, whatever the polls happen to say that day.
Thoughtful comment on slashdot, please mod down appropriately.
You can still get JiffyDOS for those. Drop Maurice Randall a line over at www.cmdrkey.com. Why not type LOAD"",8 (or,8,1) to load a program on a disk, or LOAD"$",8 then type LIST to get a list of files on the disk. Jiffydos will help things up A LOT. I had to replace the stock ROM on my first one also, picked it up for $20 at a hamfest. Had a C64 ROM in there before getting JiffyDOS for it.
...I suppose then the average computer user is the equivalent of a drooling, babbling idiot.
My whole theory still holds true. There is only X amount of computer knowledge in the world. If Y amount of people are using computers, then the knowledge per person is X/Y. So, as the amount of users, Y, increase, the share of knowedge, X, per user continues to decrease. If you think about it, it's more on target than Moore's law.
Government requires licenses to use all sorts of tools (whether it be vehicles, firearms, or other items), but turns a blind eye to people who use destructive computers that end up spamming, DDoS'ing, or causing other types of damage. Nobody has been killed by a virus or DDoS attack... yet. It'll happen sooner or later.
I suppose that's why I take such an interest in the maintainenance of my property. I do 90% of the work on all my vehicles, I do 100% of the work on all my computers, and 100% of any repairs that may need to be done on any other home electronics or other items that the landlord isn't responsible for. I hate not knowing how something works.
Yep, I have two of these, actually. One I just purchased. They both are in 100% working order, though the first one has a home-made wood and aluminum handle on it, and I'm still looking for another keyboard cable. They both have JiffyDOS, and system reset buttons (to accompany the serial reset buttons). Great little machines. Was thinking about converting one to an internal LCD if I can do it without making any permanent mods to the inside of it.
Well, I suppose as long as the DRM didn't require me installing any software on a computin' box, and it was known that I was just getting a "time limited rental" of such media, it may be ok. Would sure eliminate "late fees", if such a product would self destruct after X:XX amount of time. It would make me steer clear of it, though, as I usually prefer to packrat things. And Stuff. Woot, WOOT, woot. - T.G.S.
Wait a freakin' minute here. If all these zombie machines are sending from home-type broadband connections, why not just limit the amount of outgoing mail? I mean, the average user shouldn't have to send more than 1 email per minute? On average, think about it, how many emails do you send per hour from home? I measure mine in emails per day, not hours. When the ISP sees, oh 50,000 emails flying out in say, a minute, Put the brakes on that ip addy. I'm sure some reasonable setting would be effective and not bother 99.9% of the users, except for those/. users who'll bitch up a storm.
Free communisim at its best. I realize censorship happens here, too, but at least you can speak out on slashdot freely. And don't gimme no shit about not being able to. Oh, wait, mod this down, oh left wing moderators.
Well, if someone is attacking you with deadly force, you can use deadly force to defend yourself (unless you're in the California 9th circuit court of appeals, then you'd be guilty of some kind of attack on someone's personal freedom or something). So I don't see any reason (besides that 9th one) to use the same force to defend your computers in YOUR home (after all, isn't it a home invasion? If the packets are making to TO your machine IN your house, it IS in the 4 walls, right?)...
Sounds sane to me, (but i'm not a judge or lawyer, so i might be wrong.).
Yawn. How boring.

"How many chances do people need before they have can be held accountable for their actions?"
That depends on how many times you can run the case thru appeals courts.
It'll never happen. Too much money involved there, most likely.
Ya know, the whole "big turban" thing.
What took ya so long?

Degaussing circuit? Hahah... not on computers that old. Monitors didn't start having degaussing features until the early 90's, last I remember.
Damnit, this post screwed up my perfectly good =0 score I had going for so long.

You can fit them in, just turn them sideways. I've actually had disks in there for years with no issues. The one i kept IN the drive died, tho.

It's all George Bush's and the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy! They were behind it!
And the world thought the US had the most stupidest users on the planet. Nyah!

"So I don't see any reason (besides that 9th one) to use the same force to defend your computers in YOUR home"
Add the word "NOT" in there somewhere.

But that would infringe on someone's right to privacy, somewhere, somehow.
