Um, from what I've seen so far, the reason they can sell the Raspberry Pi model A for $25 is that it's basically a single Broadcom BCM2835 SoC (with embedded RAM) mounted on a PCB with some I/O connectors and not much else. (the model B just adds one other chip to provide a USB hub and ethernet).
Well, that's the world we live in just now I'm afraid. You are an American on Slashdot and that pretty much makes you rich (certainly in the top 5% globally). The vast majority of the world doesn't, and never will, have the kind of personal transportation you enjoy.
A heck of a lot cheaper than the Gumstix board I bought a few years ago! and about 1/6 the price of the Beagle Board I bought last year. Looks interesting.
Epilepsy? I believe seizures are essentially the failure of neural suppression and the brain consequently lighting up like a Christmas tree, maybe has something to do with this.
For me the quintessential MP sketch is Dirty Hungarian Phrasebook , which says a lot about the field of speech recognition and natural language translation at the moment.
Given I can't be bothered to take the most basic steps to gain a little privacy for my letters, like using envelopes, writing everything on postcards that let everybody in the postal industry in contact with my mail read it, what are the best couriers for me to send my letters with?
Honestly, I think some articles are just deliberate trolls for the computer-security folks on Slashdot.
I guess the HD could be bound to the CPU however, via hardware encryption and an embedded private key in the CPU firmware. That way, dead CPU = lost data, even if the HD is removed.
Not exclusively though, as a side to the usual physical toy gift(s), donate a couple bucks to a charity on their behalf. A long shot, but it just might help them appreciate what they've got, difficult as that can be for a kid living on planet affluence all their lives. (this coming from an old hippie)
This sounds like a specific case of Synesthesia, with sound and taste interacting, rather than the more often cited case of sound and colour perception.
The DSP Innovations codec manages decent speech quality at 600bps, god knows how (proprietary closed source). I think this the state-of-the-art in low bitrate codecs just now.

Pretty sure I saw this in Blade Runner, where the street vendor reads the serial number embedded in a snake scale.

Heh, reminds me of the ending of Sales Guy vs Web Dude
IBM produces first 'brain chips'
Bonus geek points for spotting the error on this page.
Peak Oil mostly.

Nachos
Kinda looks like a mini version of the Beagle Board, fills the gap between 8-bit Arduino and the powerful (but >$100) Beagle.

Funny but kinda true - he was quite wealthy and successful, but a manic depressive.
I think (since the only source is the video) that it's called a 'meta watch', not 'metal watch', i.e. a watch made of watches. Yo Dawg, etc.
These, particularly the second sample (The Opera Game) sound like something Richard D James would do. A certain random, almost generative quality.
Um, these guys would probably disagree with you. They've been around for over a decade and are doing quite well I believe.

Then they wouldn't be terrorist attacks. The element of surprise is the chief weapon.

Well, yes, until they turn into killer cars, and then you need mutant long-cats to deal with the cars.
And then dismembered hands to deal with the long-cats....
