    Um, from what I've seen so far, the reason they can sell the Raspberry Pi model A for $25 is that it's basically a single Broadcom BCM2835 SoC (with embedded RAM) mounted on a PCB with some I/O connectors and not much else. (the model B just adds one other chip to provide a USB hub and ethernet).

    Well, that's the world we live in just now I'm afraid. You are an American on Slashdot and that pretty much makes you rich (certainly in the top 5% globally). The vast majority of the world doesn't, and never will, have the kind of personal transportation you enjoy.

    Given I can't be bothered to take the most basic steps to gain a little privacy for my letters, like using envelopes, writing everything on postcards that let everybody in the postal industry in contact with my mail read it, what are the best couriers for me to send my letters with?

    Honestly, I think some articles are just deliberate trolls for the computer-security folks on Slashdot.

    I guess the HD could be bound to the CPU however, via hardware encryption and an embedded private key in the CPU firmware. That way, dead CPU = lost data, even if the HD is removed.

    Not exclusively though, as a side to the usual physical toy gift(s), donate a couple bucks to a charity on their behalf. A long shot, but it just might help them appreciate what they've got, difficult as that can be for a kid living on planet affluence all their lives. (this coming from an old hippie)

    This sounds like a specific case of Synesthesia, with sound and taste interacting, rather than the more often cited case of sound and colour perception.

    The DSP Innovations codec manages decent speech quality at 600bps, god knows how (proprietary closed source). I think this the state-of-the-art in low bitrate codecs just now.
