  1. or NetBeans on Best Developer Tools for OS X · · Score: 2, Informative

Eclipse has its strong points, but some people (like me) just don't like it. I can't really say why i don't like it, i guess it just doesn't feel right to me. I do like NetBeans a lot though. NetBeans looks and behaves more like a real OS X application than Eclipse IMO.

And if you're new to Swing development, Matisse (the GUI designer in NetBeans) really helps a lot... it makes it easy to develop java GUI's in the same way that Visual Studio makes it easy to develop winforms GUI's.

If you're a java developer (or are interested in getting started with Java) on OS X, i highly recommend giving NetBeans a shot. It's free, open source, easy to use and powerful.

note: i have nothing to do with the NetBeans project, i just think it's a great free IDE that deserves as much attention as Eclipse.

  7. Linux won't be ready for the desktop until... on Vista Launch Good for Desktop Linux? · · Score: 2, Interesting

... until developers can get fired for having certain things not working correctly or good enough. KDE and Gnome are both very close to being good enough for every possible type of user. They just lack the finishing touch. And that stuff is hard to code... not because it's difficult but because it's boring and tedious. Developers working for Apple have to do this because they know that if they don't, they _will_ lose their jobs. Same goes for developers working for Microsoft. If they don't get it working the way they've been told it should be, they're in trouble.

In the OSS world it's different. A lot of these developers are volunteers, and are scratching an itch. They are gonna be working on stuff they actually enjoy working on because hey, it's their free time. And who could blame them? Why should they work on boring stuff in their free time? Of course there are also paid developers working on KDE and Gnome. But i have never heard of any of them getting fired for not putting on that finishing touch for their latest release. And that is the reason why every year it's the year of Linux On The Desktop, and it never actually is.

Apple is luring Windows users to OS X despite the Windows monopoly. Linux should've been able to do this as well.. they sure have had enough time to get it done (more than Apple has spent on OS X).

Sure, a lot of people are like you and prefer to buy the actual CD. There are however also people like me... if i buy 10 albums in a store it costs me 150$ while it would only cost me 100$ on iTunes. But if i were to buy them in the store, i would also have to take the time go to the store to pick them up, and after that i'd have to rip the CDs so i can transfer them to my iPod. After that, the CD are put away and the next time i'll use them is if i want to rip them again. So for me, iTunes is not only cheaper, it is also more convenient than buying actual CDs because it takes me less time, and i don't have a bunch of CD's lying around. I also take weekly backups of my iTunes music library on a seperate harddrive so the possibility of losing my tracks is rather small.

oh and yes i know i can only listen to my iTunes tracks on 5 concurrent pcs... but seriously, i only have the songs on my iMac and on my iPod. So that only counts as one Authorized Computer because iPods don't count towards your authorized computer total. To me, the DRM is not an issue and if it was, i could remove it with Hymn

New products might be announced next week... maybe the week after that, maybe the month after that, hell you might end up waiting until June. Or you could just buy one now, and you'll be sure that whatever you buy will most likely still run the latest versions of OS X and other software in 4 years time.

i just wonder why he thinks all code should be Free, but art and music don't have to be that way all of the sudden. to me this just seems like a double standard.

you're right about all those things... but it gets tedious to implement the same logic (eventhough it's just presentation logic) more than once. I don't like UI code, to me it's the most boring part of application development. It would be very nice if i'd only have to write that code once and have it work on both Windows and Linux. Now i have to do this boring work twice, once in SWF, and once in GTK#

i can definitely understand that Mono/GTK# isn't ready for that yet... i know they could definitely use more developers, and that's not always easy for an open source project. But what bothers me is that the Mono developers are always claiming that Mono/GTK# is the answer to the cross platform problem and that it's ready for it when pretty basic GTK# code doesn't even run on on Windows without crashing.

Instead of doing so many interviews and posting on Slashdot, perhaps they should actually try to fix those things and make their software do what they claim it does.
