  1. Re:Should We ... on Oscar Wrapup (American Beauty and The Matrix win) · · Score: 1

This has been done to death, I know, but I've come to the conclusion that "Blame Canada" was not the best choice for a nomination. Most South Park fans would agree that it was not the best song, but it also had a very poor chance to win because it was essentially a "marching song". It seems Oscars for best song usually go to something "softer", in which case I would say "Up There" conforms more closely. Taken out of context, it has the longing and determination typical of Disney fare, which seems to dominate this category.

You think so? I thought Robin Williams did a poor job of singing it. I expected him to use his voice talent in his rendition, but he ended up just shouting the song with very little inflection. The dance sequence was very good, however.

That's odd; I've worn a watch since approximately the same age, and I have an almost uncanny "sense" of time. I know it's not completely conscience; I can "set" the time I will awaken to within 5 minutes of accuracy. However, it only works if I really need to wake up at that time for something important.

I suspect it is learned behavior; I find myself guessing the time before I look at at clock or watch. In essence, I use a time-keeping device to recalibrate my own internal clock. Perhaps a similar exercise for you would improve your sense of time? Food for thought.

That is a very good idea. It also has the added benefit of depriving the SKs of the attention of receiving a negative score. Their scores would just sit at the default level.

However, I see one problem: Even with increased MPs, would Mods give points to mediocre posts? That is, posts that may not be particularly insightful or original, but certainly above SK level. I suspect not. It seems this would have the effect of lumping disparate quality postings into one category. Perhaps this is not a bad thing.

Actually, the USPS did provide it free as of ~3 years ago. I downloaded it from their site in early 1997, and it was a 200 MB file. It contained Long/Lat coordinates for each Zip code. Zip codes actually refer to the location of the Post Office, which strictly speaking is a point not an area. In most areas, the territory covered by a given Post Office is very well defined, but this is not universally true. They stopped the download option in 1998, and now you can look up individual Zips only.

    Winux!
I've wondered about that. Couldn't MS just develop a proprietary GUI for Linux, one which they make necessary for their ported apps to Linux (i.e. Office, Money, etc.)? Basically, it would be like Windows 3.1 running on top of DOS. Point and click for the end user, sudden influx of familiar apps, and the MS name would make this desirable for the "average computer user". If the kernel development team makes changes that MS doesn't like, MS could fork their own open source version. The open source nature probably wouldn't change their SOPs much, as the GUI needed to run their apps is closed. It would be analogous to open sourcing MS-DOS during Win3.1 heyday: not much use, as you still needed 3.1 to run the apps.

No, it improves a product that many of us will have to deal with, for good or ill. The idea is peer review, correct? Granted, MS is asking for black-box (i.e. not giving access to code) peer review, but it is still a request in tune with the ideals often espoused in this forum. But I guess since MS does it, it's evil by definition. How hypocritical.
