I also re-read the original post and noticed that it mentioned that Mercedes shouldn't drop the price on their HIGH END cars to compete with GM, so I'm an idiot and my response was completely pointless.

BTW, it's not Daimler Benz, but DaimlerChrysler. A company which makes vehicles like the $14,000 Dodge Neon and the similarly priced (on the low end) PT Cruiser.

GM, on the other hand, sells vehicles like the almost $50k Volvo S80 and the $75,000 Cadillac XLR, which certainly is aimed to compete with the Mercedes Benz SL. So while you could say that Mercedes-Benz and Saturn aren't really in the same market, Dodge & Buick certainly are.

One of greatest strengths of the football field (ff) as a unit of measurement is its flexibility. Of course, this is also one of its greater confusions and annoyances as well. It can be used as either a measurement of distance OR area. Some references for you:
a common informal unit of distance in the United States. Americans aren't quite agreed as to whether the unit is exactly 100 yards (91.44 meters), the distance between the goal lines on an American football field, or 120 yards (109.728 meters), the distance including the two end zones. (Canadian football fields are 10 yards longer.) The football field is also used sometimes as an informal unit of area; including the end zones, an American football field represents an area of 1.3223 acre or about 0.535 hectare. (http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/dictF.html)
I can't help noticing the number of times American reporters and news anchors measure distances and areas in units of football fields. Aircraft carriers, bomb craters, space shuttles and shopping centres are all dimensioned in football field units. I wouldn't be too surprised if a common abbreviation of "FF" were to enter the language. (http://www.blogscanada.ca/blog/default.aspx?date= 2003-10-10)
100 meters is a regular football field plus 10 meters. (http://www.map-reading.com/ch5-1.php)
If you look at http://www.charliefrench.com/PDF/Gr4Measur1.pdf , you'll even see that it's being taught in Grade 4 math as a unit of length.

Fascinating, really. I'm almost glad I took the time to look this up! Now I know how big a football field is. God bless America.

Nobody who's been modded up has mentioned this yet, but before you quit a job you don't like, you should probably look at yourself first. WHY don't you like the job? What did you do to contribute to the poor situation you're in? Are you likely to do it again at the next place? Certainly there are a vareity of factors that could contribute to you not liking your job, but if you take some or all of those factors with you from job to job due to your own baggage, you're not doing anybody a favour.

Yeah, if you hate your job, and have done what you feel is reasonable to make things work out there and have been unable, by all means look for a new job. In my opinion, during the interview process people are allowed to have one or two jobs in their resume where things didn't work out for a specific reason, and if you can show that you did your part to make things work out, that can sometimes even be turned into a positive in an interview. However, I know if I see somebody getting laid off from job after job, or quitting, or whatever, it suggests a disturbing trend in my mind.

Also, to those of you who say to never quit until you have another job: while generally I'd agree with you, there are a lot of other things to life besides working. For instance, if you've worked at a job for a couple years and lived below your means, you should have some savings. Maybe this is the perfect opportunity to quit, send out a bunch of feelers on the job front, then grab your powerbook and mobile phone and mess around in Europe for a couple weeks while you play phone tag with all those recruiters. Or go snowboarding, fix your house up, or whatever it is that you've been dreaming about doing. Now isn't THAT better than bumming around hating life in your crappy cubicle in your crappy job?

Windows NT-based operating systems (i.e. 2000 & XP Pro) allow you to use Terminal Services as you're doing to get into them. There's a Remote Desktop client available for both Linux and Mac OS X (www.rdesktop.org).

If you're using Linux as your media server, just connect to it using a remote X-Server. It might be a little less intuitive for a Windows user to understand, but you can locally display your programs on your client that are actually running on your server. The client can be Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. On free windows X server can be obtained at www.cygwin.com.

I know I'm not the first by any means to mention this here, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense to me for Apple to license OS X to IBM. With IBM attempting to get out of the home/business PC market with its sale of that division to Lenovo, they have a wide opening in their product offerings. Or at least will have over the next few years as that plan gets executed.

IBM has the advantage of fabricating its own chips, and Apple could keep a portion of its hardware sales by co-designing the IBM hardware and making something off each sale. They would also of course make a software license fee. IBM would make a killing, and given the fact that they have been looking for UNIX-like alternatives to Windows on the desktop for years anyway (witness their Linux R&D) this would really jump-start that effort. IBM would of course continue to sell its Lenovo co-marketed Windows products, thereby making money off both OS choices as it weans people off Windows and onto OS X.

With IBM selling "Apple co-designed" IBM PPC business notebooks and workstations running OS X, it seems to me that this would be a great boost for both companies. It would also probably help spur further R&D on IBM's PPC line which would get us faster computers sooner.
