Apparently Apple has not done so well financially for the 3rd quarter. Revenue is down 3 percent, worldwide PC sales in general are declining, the market is weak, and they had to lay off 7 percent of their employees in Sacramento. My guess is that they're looking for cash.

KDE Developer Hetz Ben Hamo wrote this to the Register (although not speaking for the KDE Organization as a whole):
It's amazing how SGI was short-sighted when they sold lots of their patents regarding 3D to Microsoft.

I have read the forums back when you posted the news about MS buying some patents from SGI and many people pointed that MS needed it for their XBox - and that made me wonder: why wouldn't NVidia bought those patents back then? They made the XBox graphics chip, so any lawsuits against MS would have simply forwarded to NVidia - the author of the NV chip.

Few people wrote back then in the forums that MS cannot do much with their new patents - and if there will be problems with those patents, that will be the graphics manufacturers (Nvidia, Matrox, ATI, you know - the usual suspects)..

With Apple, it's not much problematic - Apple can make some deal with MS regarding those patents and license them, so Apple case is pretty clear - so Apple can have OpenGL without any problem...

Now - enter Linux (and *BSD - depends where/how you look). Inside XFree there's something called MESA which is an OpenGL "clone" without the OpenGL logo. MS can quickly kill Mesa with a simple cease-and-desist letter unless Mesa author will pay the license. MS can also ask money per copy of Mesa - who'll pay that?

The store is Electronics Boutique. I just took advantage of this deal and picked up an XBox. However, I'm pretty sure it's not part of the "Evil MS Conspiracy".

The deal is that you trade an old N64, Dreamcast or PS1 for $30 of trade-in value. Then each N64, DC, or PS game (up to 10) you trade in with the bundle will be worth at least $7.00. This is nice because if you have a lot of old games which are normally worth $1-$2 in their database, they will bump up the value of each game to $7. Games need boxes/cd cases and instructions, but the consoles themselves don't need anything except the necessary cables and controllers.

You could theoretically go to Gamestop or Funcoland and pick up lots of old crappy games for a few dollars each and trade them in for $7.00 each. You can trade in more than 10 games, but they'll only bump up the value of the first ten.

This promotion is for credit towards ANY new console. You do not have to buy an XBox. You can choose a Gamecube or a Playstation 2 if you prefer. From what I've heard, this deal lasts until June 30th. If interested, call your local Electronics Boutique.

Check Fatwallet for details. Personally, I got rid of my old PSX since I already have a backwards-compatible PS2. I also dumped a bunch of really cheap PSX games, and some free Dreamcast games that I got through promotions.

  12. cheaters on Calculators vs. PDAs in the Classroom · · Score: 1

The article mentioned cheating in the form of infrared messaging, but it would be much more than that if PDA's were allowed in the classroom. I know that back in high school, there were certain individuals who would "type" formulas or instructions into their calculator's memories.

Especially in Math and Physics classes, where you often use calculators in quizzes and exams, students would input formulas, walk-throughs of example problems and how to solve them, etc. It got so bad that the teacher eventually required everyone to show that their calculator's memory was completely blank (backup those legitimate programs...and Tetris...first!) before being allowed to use their graphing calculator on an exam.

The reason we were allowed to continue using calculators at all was because it took a LONG time to type in anything using the calculator's keys. Hunt-and-peck all the way. With a PDA, it would be trivial to type out everything on a computer and sync it to memory. Not to mention possible infrared communication between students, wireless connectivity to a network or the internet, or kids hiding programs like Derive or Mathematica (don't know if those actually exist on PDAs).

I'm all for demonstrating ideas in a visual way through calculators, but when it comes to being tested on your knowledge of the material, shouldn't students do things the old fashioned way?

This is not exactly the case of someone sneaking a Sony HandyCam into a theater and taping among the audience. According to VCD Quality, the FTF release of AToC is a TELESYNC, which basically means that it's a high-end camera pointed at a screen, with audio recorded from the source (to eliminate audience noise). So it's better than most Cam recordings that you're alluding to. Check here for definitions of how movies are bootlegged.

That said, it's still a pretty crappy release in terms of quality. I'm sure that within a week, they'll have at least SVCD screeners or workprints available for downloads.

  15. Link to quality of bootleg on Bootleg Star Wars AotC Debuts on Internet · · Score: 5, Informative
It looks like the article got the Drudge Report got their screen capture images from VCD Quality, a website that reports release news for pirated movies in VCD, SVCD, and DivX formats. Drudge even snipped out VCD Quality's URL from the image... Pretty shady reporting.

But from the reviews, it looks like this bootleg of ATOC isn't worth your download time. It's currently polling at 5.7 out of 10 for image quality, and 6.2 out of 10 for sound. Even for a VCD, that's pretty low. And of course, the JPG screen cap looks like a blurry mess. However bad the quality is, it is impressive that FTF was able to release SW Ep2 so early. Check out the comments forum to see what people (well, if you consider "5kR1p7 k1DDi3z" to be actual people) are saying about this bootleg.

The plugin card you're referring to is the R-Mod.
    http://www.lik-sang.com/catalog/product_info.php ?c ategory=41&products_id=1688&

This modification requires you to open up your PS2, thereby voiding your warranty sticker (although there are ways around that...), plugging in a card, and reconfiguring some ribbon cables. Yes, it's a fairly easy mod to install.

However, there are some drawbacks. The R-Mod has been reported to not boot any 80 minute CDR 'backups'. Because it requires the Gameshark to boot backup CDR copies, without soldering any wires to the PS2 motherboard, the R-Mod is not able to start up CDRs which exceed the TOC of the Gameshark, a 74min PS2 CD. Also, I'm not sure if it is able to boot any DVD-R's. And of course, this is not a no-swap solution. Every time you want to play a pirated PS2 game, you will need to swap discs with the Gameshark, which can get tedious after a while.

There are better mods out there. The R-Mod, while requiring no soldering, is basically just the old knife-swap trick done automatically for you. I would recommend looking into the Neo 4.1 or Messiah chips instead.
