I'm surprised that there are so many knowlegable folks on slash here that can discuss music and the physics of music

I'm an engineer and self-taught on the guitar and keyboard/piano, although I need a lot more practice. One thing that I'm lacking is a good reference on the theory. For example, I know that "no sharps of flats" is the key of C-major/A-minor. Why? Is it by definition? No one, even the few musicians I've talked to seem to be able to tell me. The same thing with the progression of the progression of the keys G-major, D-major.. I want to be able to derive this sort of thing and not have me be told "just memorize it".

If anyone knows of any web sites or books, I'd love to know which ones are good.

I use SDesk even though it's "closed as of 2000" whatever that means. This is exactly like the FVWM desktop switcher and I've mapped ctrl-arrow key combinations to move around, just like on my Linux system. It's GPLed, so you can theoretically modify it if you want. It's written in Delphi?? I don't even know what that is.

My only complaint is that SDesk seems to take a really low process priority. So that when an application is busy, it's difficult to change desktops. In practice, this doesn't seem to be a problem at all. It's just an occasional irritation.

Try getting fresh fish in the midwest. That's about as far from an ocean as you can get. Most people who live here don't like seafood. Why? Because it's terrible here! When in coastal towns, I eat it like crazy. But to get fresh fish here, you have to go to a really nice restaurant who has it flown in. That's expensive.

I'm not saying this is an excuse for these people not eating healthy. Personally, I eat oatmeal, tuna, smoked salmon, etc. But fresh? It's not feasible. (maybe I just haven't found the right fish market?) And sure, I'll have a burger or Taco Bell occasionally, but I work out regularly and don't take in more calories than I can burn. Replay TV. I've had one for years and love it. If you have more than one, you can stream from one to the other. If you install DVArchive on your PC you can copy shows to your PC's hard drive and then stream them to any Replay box in the house. If you have a recording conflict, the Replay will allow you to schedule it on another free Replay box in the house.

The older models (like I have) had fully-automatic commercial skip. Now you have to manually skip through them like everyone else.

Replay doesn't recommend shows or record anything I don't tell it to. I have enough junk recorded on my own without that thing adding to the pile of unwatched shows.

You can pause indefinitely. I've never used a Tivo, but someone told me you can only pause like 30 minutes? My Echostar DVR will pause up to an hour, but the Replay will pause up to the free capacity of the drive.

I didn't mean to have this turn into a Replay ad. Sorry..

No, but your long-distance provider does pay the local phone company of the person you are calling. Local phone companies get paid to terminate calls. That's the problem with the people at Verizon. They are wanting to apply traditional telephone mentality to the Internet. The bad thing is that (IIRC) all NICs on a DECnet host are given the same MAC address. You can't connect multiple ethernet interfaces to a switch (called a bridge back then) if they have the same MAC address.

Will I be able to record two shows at once or record oneand watch another? Not if it has to change the channel on my existing cable box.

I don't know about Tivo but I do have a ReplayTV that I use with Dish Network. In your case you have to have two (cable) tuners to record two shows at once. Those could be in the same box, but more likely you would need two separate cable boxes, and probably two Tivos.

Recording one show while watching another is not usually a problem because what you'll find is that you rarely ever watch "live TV". You tend to only watch stuff that is already on the hard drive. So you don't need a second tuner to watch a previously-recorded show while recording a single new show.

As far as controlling the channels, that is usually done through the Tivo. There is an "IR blaster" that is basically just an LED that you tape to the front of the cable box. When you change channels on the Tivo, it automatically controls the cable box for you. In my case, I only use the ReplayTV controller, never the dishnet remote.

You mention you already have a PVR unit. Doesn't your existing one do these same things? I've always assumed they were all pretty much the same in terms of basic functionality.

The Rio Music Manager has been a little tough for her to learn, but she's getting it (she's not too technical). My only complaint about that software is the inability to transfer a playlist from the PC to the Karma. You use the PC to create a playlist on the Karma, but it doesn't look like there's a way to transfer a local playlist to the Karma.

The only complaint about the unit itself is that there is no way to hook it to a belt, or strap it to your arm, etc. There is a small fabric bag to keep the front from getting scratched, but then you just have to keep it in your pocket which doesn't seem good if you are doing physical work like house cleaning, stuff outside, etc.

All in all, it's a great little player. If I had another $300 I'd get one for myself. I'm still happy with my squeezebox though. It was an mp3 Christmas :)
