but i can understand why redmond thinks it's a good idea. they're taking a beating in the press over security and they've determined that the real problem (rightly or wrongly) is the end user - so now they have a "solution"

I don't want to stick up for MS or anything but the problem is the user. If there is a patch availiable and the user doesn't install it then it is the user's fault (even if the user is ignorant).

The way I see it there are two obvious solutions...

    1. Force the update on people.

    2. People should have to have a licence to own a computer and take a test so that they understand security issues. Now I realise that sounds a little extreme but if you take into account the the cost in bussiness that worms cause then it might be a good idea. It would certainly get rid of the ignorance defense.

I don't think MS are ever betting on making loads of dosh from the hardware. What is going on between Sony and MS at the moment is nothing less than a war for control of the living room. The current generation of consoles have already changed from being straight gaming machines to being able to play DVD's (I'm leaving the big N out of this cause they always marketed the GC as a pure gaming experience). And both of the big console makers have started to dip their toes in the waters of online gaming, and whats the betting that the next consoles will allow access to the internet as well as other online services.

Who knows what these boxes will be doing for us in a decades time, I predict that we will we will see all the modern media devices (dvd, dvr, games, hi fi) converge into one box in the center of the living room.

The problem with your argument is that we (the West, and the US in particuarl) are not the reason those people feel powerless. We are being used as a scapegoat by those who wish to increase their own power without having to take the slow, difficult steps required for economic development. E.g., bin Laden doesn't really care about his followers; he's just using them to increase his own power and influence.

I don't think that is true, from what I understand Bin Laden hates the west because of Globalisation as well as any fundementalism. People like to stick their heads the sand, do you know where the cotton that was used to make your shirt came from ?, are you sure it wasn't produced in morally questionable conditions ?. Whether he is right or wrong Bin Laden (and lots of other people all around the world) think that the western economies work to keep the rest of the world poor.

Essentially what you're describing is a PlayStation 2.

The saturn and PS2 are not so similar, they are both difficult to develop for but for very different reasons.

The saturn was bastardized at the last moment to support rudimentary 3D. It's 2D games are widely held to be the best of their kind, it's 3D games are not.

The PS2 was designed to have a CPU that could be controlled at a very low level. Although developers struggled at first, it is paying off now that developers are familliar with the structure as the PS2 is still competing comendably with the more powerful xbox.

So far yeah, but do seriously think the GC will outsell the xbox over the christmas period ?. Anyone who knows anything about consoles knows how important that sales period is. If nintendo were expecting great sales why would they slow production of the console ?. There are lots of factors involved here but to simplify the XBox has much broader appeal than the GC and will almost certainly outsell over the next year.
