There it will sit, for a month or more until I decide to clean the car. If it plays after all of the foot traffic that has been in and out of the car....then it is worthy of the front page blessing it recieved here at Slashdot.

Until then, it is hype. Let's get people using it and either proving its worth or its lack thereof.

And every college game at Michigan's "Big House" draws 110,000+ fans, but I keep going there every home game. I'm sure as hell not going to let anyone scare me away from living my life.

They did stop allowing advertising planes above/around the stadium during games though, probably to reduce the risk. This happened right after 9/11.

On a side note, the most powerful moment of silence I have ever taken part in was the Michigan football game following 9/11 when EVERY fan in the stadium was silent, not even breathing. It was the only time that every person in the stadium sung the national anthem, I think. And the only time the anthem was followed by humbled silence, instead of rowdy cheers. I don't remember who won the football game, but I remember that.

  7. Re:How is 20GB not enough music to carry around? on More iPod Killers Introduced for the Holiday · · Score: 1

I don't mean to say that a bigger storage space wouldn't be nice. But realistically 20/40/60GB should be pretty darn close.

I understand people have larger collections, perhaps hundreds of gigs. The one thing I will point out is that at a reasonable compression rate (ie near CD quality, but not uncompressed) you can carry several days worth of music around on just 20GB. I will go so far as to say that on a 40GB player, you could get 2 weeks worth of music. I know this is not "all" of some peoples' collection, but this means that you could just load up whatever you're in the mood for on any given weekend, and have plenty to choose from for the week. If you're out one day, and the Vanilla Ice CD suddenly sounds like a great idea, you can always load it up next time you're at the computer.

And if you "need" more than 40GB, yes it is going to get expensive. But for convenience, you pay a price. Just try to lug around the 300 albums you would have on the 60GB mp3 player. Not nearly as convenient. I don't presume to know everyone's needs, but at that point it is certainly more of a want than a need.

And the iPod can be free if you are willing to spend time getting referrals for one of the free sites. I already got one, and am working on my second. This site lets you choose the iRiver one instead if you prefer "the killer" as opposed to "the king".

Belt-leaving-belt tread separation failures of ATX and Wilderness AT tires manufactured by BridgestoneFirestone, Inc. (Firestone), have led to numerous crashes, injuries, and fatalities. In August 2000, Firestone determined that a safety-related defect existed in all Firestone P235/75R15 ATX tires and in Firestone Wilderness AT tires of that size manufactured at its Decatur, Illinois plant, and commenced a recall to replace those tires

Notice that indeed defects were discovered...inflating tires more is NOT going to solve the problem. So yes, I do expect Firestone to pay for that one.

Actually, when you return something the warranty on the new product (which is generally but not always refurbished) is usually only 90 days or the remaining duration of the original warranty, whichever is longer. So no perpetual warranties, unless every time the product breaks within 90 days.

In my opinion though, if a product fails all the time, it should be recalled or else the company should pay to replace them PROACTIVELY. Look at the Firestone tire recall...would you all be saying "Just use the tires even though they suck...when you crash and die, just return the tires for new ones". I thought not.

The internet certainly has changed. Instead of surfing for porn or searching for hours to find an mp3 or picture or whatever, it's all at my finger tips.

But I rely so much on the internet to function on a daily basis. I think about this all the time. When I have a question now, the first place I look is Google. Very rarely can I not find an answer that comes from a relatively reputable source. And it is much quicker than any means of research.

Also, I show and pay all of my bills online. This is a big convenience, no more paper checks or bills, no more stamps.

But what would my life be like without the internet now? I can honestly say that if I were 100% cut off from the internet I would find it difficult to adjust for awhile. Sure, I can go back to snail mail and stamps and all of that without too much of a fuss, but I rely on the internet for my news most of the time as well.

But I would find it very difficult to do research of any type, or simply to answer a nagging question about whatever topic we happen to talk about at the water cooler. The convenience of having billions of web pages at my finger tips has hobbled my ability to research in any other fashion, and made me impatient when I can't get an answer in 2 minutes of Google'ing.

I have had problems at home with my wireless sometimes reaching from one floor to another without messing around with the antenae all the time. It seems like they're going to need a heck of a lot of repeaters/ap's for this to work out at all in that terrain.

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to run hard-wired fiber into every building, and drop off a linksys wireless router to everyone? Probably not really, but it sure seems like it is going to be very difficult to get a good wireless network in that terrain.
