  1. Reverse Engineering a virus... on Can Reverse Engineering Help In Stopping Worms? · · Score: 5, Insightful

It only helps if the people who write future variants are lazy...so I guess yes, it will help with there not being versions A-ZZZ of the bagle virus, but the serious ones are still going to be out there.

It already takes very little time for them to catch most variants these days. My software (AVG) is usually a day ahead of any of the major news organizations on having the fix for any new virus out there. The new, creative, and dangerous virus are the ones that worry me not the 200th version of netsky that shows up.

Perhaps the best way to control the spread of virus is to reverse engineer the OS/program that it is targeting...create fixes proactively and don't allow the exploits to be found in the first place. But there's probably a law or two out there that prohibits this kind of stuff, eh?

It's more or less a waste of time 99.99% of the time. It's just something to do for me...I expect no return on it. And neither should the ads in P2P programs, in my opinion.

So, no. You don't have to be proved guilty. He can of course sue the pants off everyone who ruins his reputation by filing a civil lawsuit or something if he turns out innocent and people have dragged him through the mud.

I can see how this new MS search page would become stop number 2, in front of Yahoo as long as they keep it clean and light like Google is. Then I'll move along to Yahoo of Lycos or wherever.

So yeah, I think this is a good improvement for my general searching needs, but it is going to take something amazing to replace Google as my number one choice. It's sort of a brand loyalty at this point.

I can't get the cost comparison link to work for one reason or another. But I was wondering if they were comparing current day cost, or the cost when the machine was built?

I mean, the cost of processors has gone down significantly in the past several months, so a machine built a year ago with the same speed processors as a machine built today would cost much more.

Not to mention that some of the machines on the list are most likely second (or greater) renditions of an earlier super computer, only with more procs/Ram or whatever, so those could be cheaper just because less R&D money went into them...

Just a thought, I can't see the link myself so I thought I would ponder some thoughts at those who could.

I understand where they are coming from when they say Best Buy worries about the "Devil shoppers" who who buy the stuff on sale and return it and all that...but that can't be more than a fraction of a percent of their buyers.

All they have to do to stop these types of shoppers from returning items and then rebuying them is simple...whenever they take in something on return, they either store it in the back for a week or two, or else ship it to a neighboring store to sell. If the item doesn't show up on the shelves right away, or at random times, people will not be able to count on rebuying it.

And if they want to cut the rebates out of their marketing, then they should be ready to lose most of my business. That's one of the biggest reasons I go there is the deals they have every week. I usually buy something, and often it isn't what is on sale, but the whole reason I go in the first place is the deals.

One thing I can say is that at least at Best Buy when they advertise a deal, they actually have it in stock most of the time. At Circuit City they like to pull the bait and switch and only carry one or two of the sale items and then try to get you to buy something else instead.

    My 2 cents.

Finally someone who sees the big picture. I mean, cameras in phones are just another gadget toy. The primary use is still a phone. It's like the little shitty games (snake, dots, whatever) that are in the phones. Slashdot doesn't put a front page review of 'Snakes' up for all of us telling us that the graphics are poor, and the replay value is zero. That's because the games are just something to do while you're bored, not the primary use of the phone.

The same goes for the web browsing capabilities of a phone, I don't expect people will be taking out an ad in the NYT for a FireFox on cell phones ad. (not in the near future anyway) Why? Because the crappy little web browser on the phone does a good enough job to scrape by.

So, yeah the cameras suck. We all knew that they were there for a different reason than to take crystal clear, award winning digital pictures. The camera is there as a toy/tool for people to use in addition to the primary use. If I buy an expensive SLR digital camera, I don't expect it to come with games or a walkie talkie feature, why should phones be any different?

And to reply to a post further down...yes it is an exclusivity deal that holds things up. Damn Sony for that deal. I am sure the PC version is done or almost done now, there seems no need to wait, other than the contract. Surely, it would make more profit overall if they released both at the same time?
