Well, for this to happen, there'd need to be a "registry" of some sort to check to see if it's installed. OSX doesn't have this, the files are in the same state as when they were on the CD. "Installation" means copying the files to your hard disk.

A Windows install is a scripted behind-the-scenes shindig. Who knows what's being added to your registry...where & what files are being installed, etc.

Yet I think having a machine with that much power, with a 10" foot print and a flat screen is far from boring!

I think this is a good progression of the product line. Apple took everything that wasn't great from the original iMac (screen not so nice, weight, etc.) and improved it. I think in any respect, that's good design.

According to the article, the industry is claiming that record sales are up only 1% over last year.

Well, maybe it's because they haven't come out with anything *new* in the past year? Most of the music release on any major label is really only the same crap relabelled and repackaged (ie. boy bands, korn look-a-likes, the average mid-rock bands, and the typical adult contemporary).

This seems to be the only industry that can "ship" crap products and blame the consumer for not buying them. Wake up, idiots! Someone in one of these companies needs to grow balls and release some music that's different.

    Lame?

...well, it may not be up to par with the Nomad, but for some people it'll do just fine.

Apple takes a different approach towards its products.

Being on all three sides of the deal (I manage Windows boxes at work, and use Linux / Macs at home)... from exposure, I know there's a good reason ot use each.

    1) Windows is there for the suits who want someone to blame.

    2) Linux is for people who know PC's what they're doing and want something that works well.

    3) Macs are for people who want to get things done without hassle.

Windows keeps the paychecks coming. Linux does my powerhouse work, and for stuff that I need to work and I need to get done without a hassle (like finances, or writing a letter) I use the Mac.

People who have bought into Apple's products expect the same type of simplicity and reliablity as they've gotten used to. Sure, this may not be as smooth or slick (which I think it is) as the Nomad...BUT, I can say confidently that it will work, work well, work every time, and without hassle.

I feel that I've gotten my hands into just about everything, and as far as Apple's approach, I "get it". Sure I love playing around on the Linux box and spending all night tweaking configuration files, and compiling stuff. But when I just want to listen to music or move big files around...hell, I just want to do just that, nothing more.

The iPod does just that, and it works with all the other goodies that I get stuff done with seamlessly.

    To me, that's damn cool.

People that I work for and support don't care about the newest wizbang features. They simply want to do the 2 or 3 things their computer does for them and that's it. Upgrading to a new version usually means something is going to break for them, and that's how they see it.
