If you ever want an application that is web based that truly looks the same on all resolutions and systems, look to Flash.
Flash is excellent when it's implemented well. Or it's a freaking nightmare when it's implemented poorly. Guess you've never used an excellent implementation.
I say water is plentiful (70% of the earths surface seems to be covered with it). She says it's a finite resource (I always thought it was recyclable).
I guess the true answer lies in the ability to process said water to an acceptable clean level.
How the hell do i get my tv cards working in linux. I have an ATI Wonder (TV PCI) and a WinFast TV card (Leadtek) and cannot figure out how to get either of them to work in Linux.
Look at the graph showing the comparison between 56 seconds and 1 minute 25 seconds. It is showing seconds like there are 100 in a minute. If this was built by someone at my company and was getting this much pub, I'd berate their ass.

Morons.
BTW I hate these slashdot filters isn't that what the moderators are for?
It may be easier for a person who only knows MS but to anyone who knows unix (as I admin both), SSH is preferable to Terminal Services (PC Anywhere or whatever). And if you really need a GUI then tunnel VNC.
Unix tools kick the living shit out of Windows tools. That is why Unix is king on the server side.
The Opteron will still run x86 code fine so a install that will work on any x86 system will still work on the Opteron (although wasting the 64bit capability).
I love screwing with assholes on base because that's exactly what they are. I'd rather be a brick layer for $10/hour than work for 150k on base (or for the state for that matter). It's the difference between working with people who have pride in their job and don't simply look to work till 5 because that's quittin time.
BTW I make over 150k right now so it would be a step down anyway. I have my own company and work with other companies to meet their needs (contract labor).
If i miss out on a 95k job opportunity with the govt I'll have done myself a huge favor. There is something to be said for liking your job. And "Jerks like me" love screwing with the dipshits on base who make 40k/year after being there for 20 years and are pissed off at their shitty lives. If the people are talking about me then great. That's exactly what I want, them to NEVER HIRE ME EVER.
I found the cocaine addicted restaurant managers in college were better than the people I've worked with in the govt and on base. Why is that? It takes a special kind of loser to work for the govt. Anyone who puts up with the least efficient corporation in our country is just sad.
So to summarize, fuck the govt. I'd rather be poor than work for a govt agency/military job again.
I get interviews from jobs available at our local military base. For fun I go to the interview, they offer me the job, then I drop a bomb on their stupid asses. I want 95k/year, 6 weeks paid vacation, 2 weeks sick leave (not used becomes vacation) and I don't want to work on base (ie, they need to have an office off base).
They tend to get irritated at my demands and we both go our seperate ways. I'd rather wait-tables for 2.13/hour than work for the governemnt in any capacity again (of course I don't count paying taxes as working for the govt).
You fuck Bush with your Dick, don't vote for them.
As a student wanting to learn to use a UNIX Shell so I could get a job at this company in colorado (corporate express) I was told by the other workers to get O'Reilly's Unix in a Nutshell book (pre-animals, i think it had a referee or something). I then bought the book and it was pointless since I had nothing to test it on. I had a friend in the MIS program who had switched from CS and he recommended getting a Linux distro ('95/'96ish). I was very excited to see the Tattered Cover (best bookstore ever in Denver) had not only distros (InfoMagic sets) but excellent books on Linux. I tried debian, redhat, suse and slackware. The only one I ever liked was the slackware distro (it just made more sense).
I bought walnut creek cd's every since (until i couldn't find them anymore). I run mostly redhat now (3 rh boxes, 2 slackware) but without Patrick's work Linux would have been significantly less approchable for a lowly MIS student.
However, you are 5x more likely to get the death penalty in the US if you are a minority (regardless of the jury makeup).
I am for the death penalty just not in it's current form. There are so many glaring flaws in our judicial system a "fair trial" is almost impossible to receive.
This is why most lawyers try to get the dumbest ass people on the jury. So they will overlook the obvious problems in their assertations (both prosicution and defense lawyers). We need people who understand the evidence being presented. Instead of the lowest common denominator. A housewife in Oklahoma generally will completely overlook DNA evidence because it's over her head (as will a truck driver, waiter,...). We need educated people to be judging others. A jury of your peers is generally not that (peers).
Sad really. I just hope I never have to go before our jury system where people believe Eye Witness testimony over DNA evidence or that CSI is anything like a real forensics team (my wife gets very irritated with this because it's her field of study).
You are right however that being rich plays a very big part as well. However, only in cases where the evidence is questionable (probably because they have access to better lawyers). Our country seems to forget the principle of innocent until proven guilty. Although in a country that goes to war because it's convenient, no proof of weapons of mass destruction (wasn't the initial reason Nuclear weapons, which is now just the catch all weapons of mass destruction).
Oh well, I guess GW is God's president. Lord knows killing people is exactly what God wants. Oh yeah, and so much for social programs helping other people (God doesn't like to help the poor either), I guess a tax cut for the rich (which I am one of) is more important than helping others.
GW/Republicans == Hypocrites.
Oh btw, they have the house, senate, judges and presidency. Do you think they'll overturn abortion? No, because it wouldn't give them a good issue when the stupid public votes and it would energize the liberal/left.
GW/Republicans == Pandering to stupid religious types.
I started developing for 0.98 kernel using Slackware in '96 (i think) and was very impressed at the free product that was linux at that time.
Now every time I download an ISO and install it (various distros) it amazes me how far linux has come. I'm running RH 7.3 currently but 8.0 looks cool (I'm one of three people that actually likes the unified desktop).
'96: programming dot clocks to try to get XWindows to run on my video card, text install, boot disk req'd
'03: cd based install, almost completely grandmafied (my word for grandma can use it), excellent 3rd Party Software (Oracle, Borland, StarOffice,...)
I kind of miss those InfoMagic CD sets for $15 that had redhat, debian, slackware, suse, and the several cd's of docs. Those were the days.
Adobe Acrobat. (Remember they have something to do with PDFs.)
Any application I use I simply print to PDF. My company uses ActivePDF to populate forms for our clients. As soon as I can do this in Linux or OS X (preferably Linux) for free I'll switch. Till then it's crappy IIS and Active PDF.
I hate Windows and all but everything is released for Windows. Where Mac and Linux usually have to wait to see if something is coming to their platform (if ever).
I guess it's time to start my own OSS project for populating PDF Forms via Apache. Ah nevermind. I'd rather pay for it.
However we use MySQL, MS SQL Server and Oracle (different solutions/architectures). I don't see the pricing problem with either MS or Oracle. You can get the standard editions for around $1500.
Sometimes paying a little can save lots more in the long run. I personally hate Transact SQL but it's probably because I started on PL/SQL first.
However, that being said I just don't understand some of the stupid ass implementations in TSQL.
MySQL is great because it's small, cheap(free), and very reliable (in my usage). Plus it's got that great JDBC driver that some guy wrote (name?) and the MySQL people hired him (way to go buddy!).
Oracle just seems to have the whole ball of wax. I've never felt I'm trying to program (stored procedures) around a piss poor implementation (like TSQL). So for my (and my companies) money I still say Oracle is the way to go. Plus, I have yet to see the reason to migrate from 8i to 9i.
I'm seriously considering implementing Oracle Financials as well. Show me the MS or MySQL product that can compare to that!
That's exactly why it should be called...

So when saying I use Linux you're refering to the use of the Linux kernel as the base of your system.
When you say you're using Red Hat Linux you are refering to a specific Distribution that uses Linux and GNU Tools and is packaged by a third party for easy install, technical support and donation of expertise to the Linux/GNU communities.
I guess I dont see the need to append GNU because I don't frequently see people say I'm using FreeBSD-Based/Darwin/Mac OS X or I'm using SysV/Solaris (or whatever the hell it's based on).
Plus I'd like to see the GNU Tools run on a kernel other than Linux (OSS not Commercial). Hurd is POS, if a good kernel were that easy, why is Hurd so far behind?
My guess is they get the parts from Asia, ship them to California for completion and then ship to Europe. Plus it's my understanding you have that dumbass VAT to pay as well.

What if you were going to sell your $12000 car and the ad in the newspaper printed $1200 by mistake?
Would you sell it for $1200? Doubtful. I love hypocrites who say a business should do what they wouldn't do themselves.
What if it were a company you owned stock in and you were going to lose part of your dividend? Bet you'd change your mind then too.
A company has no reason to "honor" mistakes, that's why they print those little disclaimers about erronious listings.

Here's the republican party in a nutshell.
We say we're Christian/Moral party.
Christianity preaches turning the other cheek, we attack other countries preemptively.
Christianity preaches helping those in need, we cancel social programs for tax cuts for the rich and corporations.
Sounds christian to me. Fucking hypocrites.
Any of the micro distros will work fine. You can also look for old distros from around the time of your hardware was new.
How about we get rid of religion?
Sounds like a plan to me.
