In Jaguar I could start X11 and the in the terminal do a: $exec startkde &
AND , i would get KDE3.1 ala Fink running.
I couldnt click on icons that i saw on the screen, but the dock worked.
Also i liked the ability to log into on of the linux boxen here with ssh -X -l and do a $exec startkde & on the remote box and use this as a full screen X terminal.
Well... with Panther... If u try to start KDE , you see the center KDE box come up.. then all hell breaks loose. Konqueror windows all over, and you cant click on the task bar (kicker)
My tempory solution to this is simply not to start KDE either locally or when doing a remote ssh.
I think it is a conflict with Expose, but who knows.
Yes... the new panther X11 is installed corectly.
Oh well it is really a minor bug, and im sure it will be fixed in some update.
Regarding Linux in Mass, I think your writer is mistaken about the cost ownership, and GPL software really is the only way small business can have any of the IT peice of th pie. Newer versions of linux are not the nightmare of old. Before you complain, try for yourself. Knoppix is a version that runs from CD ans installs nothing on your hardware. http://www.knoppix.org
GPL software is perfect for government because the results of tax expenditures are then available to those who paid for it
Thanks,
me
Ack...... i wish all posting email proggies would have spell check
Whoa, i am not one of the BSD is dying bunch sir. And it is good to have a proven choice other than GPL. My comment was meant to say that IF you as an open source developer do NOT want your code included in proprietary software, then use the GNU/GPL license.
Wow, the computer industry has come full circle. Pretty soon Toshiba will actually equal the size and weight of my Kaypro II portable that i bought new and still have.
Also, i hate to get into the Mac arguements, but.... we have a dozen or so wintel boxen at works, 5 linux servers (no i wouldnt use Windows on a server.... and an iMac because the book keeper here likes macs.
I have never been a Mac fanatic , actually never really paid any attention ot them.... but.... when im here after hours , i am spending more and more time on the iLamp and less and less on the other boxes.
I have apple x11 , fink , all the KDE stuff i know and love, AND iTunes, iMovie etc all on the same desktop.
AND.... the screen is beautiful
So, when the kid wanted a computer at home... I got her an iMac for there too.
It may be non scientific... but i just like the iLamp....
and i really cant say i get excited about any of the wintel boxen that are used for work stations here
So the end result is that even if the iLamp is more $$$$.... it is actually worth it
Ewwww the new 7 series bimmers are UGLY.. the designer, Chris Bangles should be fired....
Lucky i got one of the last good BMW's

And you would be doing BMW a favor, Personally I would have to have the preverbial paper bag with eye holes to drive one.... and.... the new 7's I-DRIVE system is based on Windows CE and crashes all the time....... and with SuSE so close to the factory..... shame
The I-DRIVE system in the new BMW 745 is based on Windows-CE
Does this bill mandate opening that?
Of course , im sure BMW is now thinking they should have used home grown SuSE instead, considering all the computer related problems the 745's are having
This is a perfect example of why ALL law enforcement agencies NEED judicial oversight before they can look into any type of comunications. The founders of our constitution new this.
All the PATRIOT bill did by removing this oversight is to give the same tools to our FBI to protect our citizens that the old KGB had to protect theirs
I wonder if Longhorn will run under MacBochs X86?
That would be worth a bux & a 1/2 to see
Longhorn promises new methods of storing files, tighter links to the Internet, greater security and fewer annoying reboots, Microsoft has said. "
Well , so does Knoppix, Yarrow, Mandrake, Slackware, or even RH$.
So, whats the big deal???
I was thinking of tryingto setup a dual monitor on my new dual G5 mac.
..... when i work on the linux boxes, (i took the monitors away) i just ssh -X into em from the new Mac.
..... almost .... there are still a 1/2 dozen winboxen here that give me way more problems than the linux and mac's combined.
..... so good luck RH
hmmmmm i wonder if i can plug it in, or do i have to recompile Panther????
I actually have 1/2 a dozen RH9 boxen here, and one new Debian box.
I think Debian is becomming my favorite flavor of linux, Yarro, fedora, or redhat.
Oh
Best of all worlds?
No change in Redhat will make it case me any more grief that the windows machines i have
cheers
All i need now is a faster spelling checker
hmmmmm
:-)
... it is a wonderfull experince for a geek.
.....
I have a Dual G5 Mac with the 23" studio display, and a BMW M5.
and Ill whip the but of the Lexus driving Intel using previous poster any day of the week.
Actually the G5 is beautiful, and it really is fast. Along with Panther
I have read Opteron benchmarks vs G5's that show the amd is faster in some things , slower in others
However, the total package of the 'big mac' is truely awesome.
AND, No lexus, none, not one is faster than my BMW M5
lol

Oh, YES! Panther is worth $129.00
Cheers
Considering where Redhat Mike works, he may not have known.
.... on Debian, Kpackage, or in OS X, Fink/Fink Commander.
I have 2 words for him about installers:
Well 2 words hyphenated:
apt-get
Or
I dont seem to have the RPM related issues with these.
Some one should email him apt-get for Redhat........
You somtimes CEO's are kept in the dark on purpose
Cheers
I hope the China Internet Police force will do something about:
chinanet.cn.net
The source of 80% of my spam.
I dought it though
Now wait, lets think. Some auditor is going to come up with some math that says PAYING for software is less than FREE software.
My kid flunked pre-algebra last year, maybe she should apply to M$ for an auditor job.
If i charge a whole bunch of money for buggy software, which of the following statements are true.
A. Free software costs more?
B. Free software costs less
C. Tinfoil hats protect you.
I am wondering if M$ is manufacturing software or bulls*&t
cheers
Here is what i sent .. short but to the point:

Is software REAL property like a house , or is it an idea. I think this 'rights of others' thing is over rated.
Do we really want to live in a world where if i have a thought, I must pay M$ for thinking an idea that they have claimed to own?
Is this getting a little ridicules?
(off comment portion of post):
If i really want MY digital rights managed, I can do that myself.
Whoa, i am not one of the BSD is dying bunch sir. And it is good to have a proven choice other than GPL. My comment was meant to say that IF you as an open source developer do NOT want your code included in proprietary software, then use the GNU/GPL license.

this is a perfect example on why you should use the GNU/GPL license instead of BSD or other open source models.
It means that big companies will find it more difficult to steal and bury.
If I actually feel the need to manage MY digital rights, I will do it myself.

The reason we arent all flying is the greed of the evil insurance companies preventing this and many other worthwile projects.
The (the miserly, greedy, evil) insurance companies wouldnt care if all inovation would stop so long as it would increase their profits.
President Bush anounces that in order to stimulate economic growth, Big Corperations will no longer have to obey any laws.
"We need this to help the stock market"

I wonder if the 'browser of hackers' Mozilla has this problem?
After just reading the alex de toker think tank stuff saying open source is the terrorists playground.
What perfect timing for M$
I really am supprised that 'Joe 6-pack' isnt willing to at least try Linux.
To bad he/she cant get a Dell that dual boots right out of the box

Perhaps its about time that M$ included StarOffice/OpenOffice file filters in their office suite
... These are good mature programs .. unlike the old StarOffice 5.2 which i didnt care for..
Considering how popular the double sided OO(free) SO(comercial) stratigy will become.
AND
Staroffice is windoze compatible ... and once in Staroffice format .. Why in the world would you want to switch back to Word format?
duh!!!
The 745i is based on a Windoze CE box.
...... hmmm
I luckily enough have a 2002 BMW without the fancy Idrive......
A plain old clutch and a 6 speed
the good bmw
i wonder if CE does the blue screen of death
This could be worse than being at a toll booth behind a Pinto, and in front of an Audi
