Gee. Looks like SOMEBODY is a fanboy. From the article:
"Charlize gave a terrific performance and she looked just as lethal and capable as the previews promised. She makes for a terrific action hero, leaving the Terminator looking even more obsolete than he was in his last film, and making Lara Croft look like a whiny wannabe. It's easy to be biased toward Charlize, and if I were capable of being biased toward anyone, it would be her, but I managed to control myself. The way I saw it was that the movie was fantastic and Charlize was phenomenal, but if anyone else had done it (as well as or better) and had that same "it" factor that Charlize has flowing out of every pore on her gorgeous face, I would have felt exactly the same about the film as I do right now. And that is true. Reality: Charlize was in it, and she was amazing, and I can't think of anyone who has the talent and the physical grace, strength, and stamina to pull it off as well as she did."
I almost felt dirty reading this guys review. Should you trust a movie review from a guy you woldn't shake hands with??
..., but am I the ONLY one that thinks there are WAAY too many "Gamer Grrl" articles in the last six months or so? ESPECIALLY considering that they are supposedly the "silent minority" in gaming. To me it just smacks of "let's talk about gamer chicks to get guys to read our article".
Anyway, I really don't see what the big deal is. The media (at least in this country) is all about making things seem more important than they really are. Anyone whose watched "small town" local TV or read a small town newspaper has seen this to great comedic effect.
People want to feel important, and with the exception of amateur porn, when people entertain themselves visually, it's all about identifying with something more attractive than oneself.
And you know it's true. Five bucks says that at least fifty percent of these "Gamer Grrrls" (and their editorial lap dogs) that seem to to be SO concerned about how women are presented in games watch "Desperate Housewives", "Entertainment Tonight", read "The Enquirer", "People", and any number of those celebrity hound magazines.
"We're uncomfortable with how we're portrayed in video games!"
Bullshit. Then why in the hell do you let every other branch on the media tree get away with it? Stop clogging my gamer news feeds with these BS articles and go after the ones who really started the whole "Barbie" phenomenon. Because most of the "production values" that you're criticizing the game industry for were happily borrowed from your good friends at the MPAA, et al.
PS - And stop letting your kids watch TV and stop buying them "Barbie" dolls!!!
I think you need to qualify your statement. I don't think the Dreamcast failed. On the contrary, it was a smashing success for me. I got tons of top quality games from a kick ass console with VGA output!!!!!1!!!one!!!!
So by THAT measure, it was a complete success.
Apparently, that's not the case for Sega. Now, I don't know about you, but I was under the impression that being a consumer was about being GREEDY. It's all about ME:
"I want this. It will make me happy. Gimmie!"
I don't remember being concerned about Sega's fiscal stability. I NEVER judge the success of ANYTHING I consume on the merits of how much money it provides the producer. Screw them! I should be getting it for free anyway. Capitalism is an adversarial system.
Anyway, Lots of smart people have based very successful products on not so "successful" ancestors, so I would think success is in the eyes of the beholder. You thought it sucked, I thought it was sweet, and apparently, the people at microsoft thought alot of things about the dreamcast were really...dreamy (built in networking, analog triggers, etc). According to you, the Xbox wasn't very successful because of the sales figures, but everyone I know who bought one LOVES it...alot. So which is a bigger "success", the product that lots of people have and lots of people like, or the one that not as many people have, but a larger percentage of them LOVE? I'll personally take door #2 anyday of the week.
Well, you and your cronies must be the minority...
Most of the game reviews and "Game Culture" pieces I've read in the last year or so (Print and Internet) tend to fall into a few distinct categories:
a) Pretentious Gamer Review ala Zonk's "Shadow of the Colossus" review (blah blah Games that have the power to move the human heart are so few and far between today that most commentators are still tentative to call gaming an art form blah blah). Give me an F-ing break!
b) The Gushing Gamer Review, where the "journalist" publically masturbates for all the world to see. On and on about how cool, awesome, and addicting the game is. 50% of a review should NOT be filled with that novice crap.
c) The Angry Gamer Review, where SOMEONE drones on and ON about how NOBODY understands them, knows what kind of games they want, or even that they exist, thereby implying how "Uber" and "Leet" they are. It's a close relative of type A above.
Oh, and BTW, all those crappy "chick" articles that "The Escapist" has been running for what seems like YEARS. Are they even really talking about games? Would seem to fit better on some 14 year olds blog inbetween how much they love Cheetos and why Mrs. Kramer in 4th period is "such a Bitch!"
The rest are just pretty standard "FanBoi" CRAP! they openly snicker about how they get to play the game before anyone else, drop a few references to how much the game has progressed since they first got to see it at the super shiek, VIP, invite only game industry demo at E3, then glaze over problems and omissions. Often times, they will continuously tell you how CRAPPY the game is in the review and then, at the end, say "yeah, but it was still pretty fun. Highly Recommended. 8.5 out of 10. Huh ?!?!?
Here's a few tips: I don't care if chicks play games. I don't care if transvestites play games. I don't care if homosexual-cross-dressing-elderly lepers play games. What I do care about is whether or not the game appears to be playtested well, whether or not there are new or cool features, and how they work, how hard is the game, how long will it take to complete, you know, practical stuff like that.
I do also care about new trends in the industry (Physics Simulator Cards? Word?!?) but the self important, fanboy crap that alot of the gaming news sites are tossing about recently has got to GO. Instead, give me the old payola-style game reviews instead. At least I KNOW they're full of shit up front without having to wade through it all first.
Is this the same infallible judicial branch of "3/5ths Human" and "Jim Crow" fame?
Just because the US Government (Executive branch, Judicial branch, or otherwise) says that something is legal, does NOT mean that it is morally defendable.
The adjective "American" used to be synonymous with something besides money, bullying and warmongering.
Ther always have been, and always will be two schools of thought on this:
1)Bad is always bad and Jesus saves!
2)Bad is only bad for you if there's "something wrong with you".
Stupid people will always be stupid. Crazy people will always be crazy. And when either one of these groups of people have children, they all spend the same amount of time with them, fostering healthy relationships and teaching them how to "get along" with everyone else in the world.
How much time is that, you ask? None.
This is no different than the "Catcher in the Rye" debates from years past.
I don't know about YOU, but I have yet to play ANY game that was as immersive as a really good book. Half-Life 2, WoW, and insert-hot-uber-game-here included. So the "yeah, but you're actually DOING the bad stuff" argument doesn't hold water to me.
We need to just REMEMBER that there have always been crazy people, and there always will be. This is not a new development folks.
If we pay for the shows with our "implied viewing" or whatever it is you call it, then why isn't an implied penalty good enough?
Most of what you said I agree with, but implying that I'm "paying" for something just because I'm looking at it is ridiculous.
The only people I know of who actually pay for TV are the British. Here in the US, this programming is "given" to us because, historically, the TV people have figured out that if they throw enough advertisement at us, it usually pays off in the end. Basically meaning that they can still make money despite the fact that they aren't charging us.
I think some of you are missing the point. The point is that, for many people, SPECTATOR SPORTS and "Hollywood Drama" are what keeps people in their little ruts, heads bowed down, slogging away at their 9-to-5, many of these people don't know anything more and frankly don't care to know anything more about their world.
People like that are spoon-fed EVERYTHING.
Gvt: Pay this tax! Lemming: OK...
Gvt: Vote for THIS guy! Lemming: OK...
Gvt: Go Cubbies! Lemming: OK...
People with access to the inner workings of the political system and access to mass media are in the unique position of being able to tell millions of people what to do. And of course some of them will do it. It might be only 10%, but 10% of a million is still alot of people.
Politicians and celebrities are usually wealthier than the "average" American...and I'm pretty sure they wil always do whatever will help them to stay that way.
In many ways, any ONE of these "special" people has more practical influence on "America" then all of us "Slashdotters" combined.
1. A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. 2. The branch of literature constituting such works. 3. Irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity.
Parody
1. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. 2. The genre of literature comprising such works. 3. Something so bad as to be equivalent to intentional mockery; a travesty: The trial was a parody of justice. 4. Music. The practice of reworking an already established composition, especially the incorporation into the Mass of material borrowed from other works, such as motets or madrigals.
You have to admit though, if the licensing terms are not "drum tight", then Microsoft can just take anyone to court and financially bulldoze their way to a verdict of their choosing.
We've already seen how they "pimped" the US Government, and as far as lawsuits go, that didn't even take that long.
I would say it's ime to start a theater boycott, but Jesus Christ!
At this rate, I won't be able to do anything media related without either supporting some sort of crooked organization (RIAA, MPAA, etc) or risk several years of jail time for some type of non-violent, quasi-criminal offense.
Music and movies have gone to crap. Thank God my two crates of books and my videogames are still safe.
1) The updates are adding new content and changing game "features" that they deliberately decided to implement (i.e. the original camera control) I guess it's a technicality, but it's more of an artistic reinterpretation on the designer's part than a "bug fix". None of the stuff they're changing is "broken".
2) Part of the update makes the game AI "harder" for round two of the "Master Ninja Tournament", which they've planned to do all along. Everyone can't be in the second round of the tournament, but everyone can still play the "Tournament Version" of the game.
That's all well and good, but from what my Grandfather told me once, he "knew quite a few fellers that got to 'seeing things'" if they stayed out working in the sun drinking "co-colers".
Of course there's always room to blame heat stroke or whatever in his stories, but nonetheless, he avoided them because they made him feel "odd".
Not to nitpick, but I don't think that's a BMX bike. It'a probably a lowrider bike
They're a little more fragile than your typical BMX because they're just made for show. It goes along with that whole "West Coast" "Gangsta" thing. Bike missions would be pretty sweet though.
As far as I know, they've said it won't be inside the console for space reasons, but I don't think they've said there wouldn't be one at all. Hopefully we'll know for sure by June.
This document looks reasonable, albeit old... because MS has likely known their harddisk plan for many months... so if it was a recent doc... it would have finalized the HD info.
The cool thing though is that it says:
("built in" not decided)
Which hopefully supports the rumors that there will be a HD for sure, but it might make an appearance as an optional plugin HD/MP3 player. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one.
That sounds like
;)
REAL ULTIMATE POWER!!!
Of course, I realize now that the author of the review was a she. So that means that there are GIRL NINJAS too!

Am I the only one that thinks these "gamer publications" are getting a little too self important?
I mean these are just GAMES after all. Right?
