I dunno, the Commodore Pet I have has been working steadily since 1977, that's not much newer than Pioneer 10, and cost under $5,000 at the time (cost me $25 last year:).
he was made to drink hemlock tea. Hemlock, when ingested, causes the body to go into spasms so violent that eventually the spine snaps, killing the victim
I can't think of a more thorough way of banishing an individual from society. Look it up, it's effectively what they considered it.
This is sort of an urban legend type thing amongst game collectors, but the cart itself isn't all that rare. Thankfully, the article even points this out:
It is neither the rarest nor the most enjoyable Atari 2600 game
The article isn't so much about the 10 rarest games, as it is the 10 most collectible/sought after games. And considering "Prototypes" is #2, it's not even much of a top 10 list at that:)
Oh, and for anyone interested in that Gold NES cart - yes, it's been dumped. I know I won't be shelling out $6k+ anytime soon to play the real thing.
I'd just as soon we didn't do this. Why, you ask? Repeat after me: NOT ALL SLASHDOT READERS SIT AT THEIR DESKS 24-7, REFRESHING EVERY 30 SECONDS.
Many duplicate stories I never see the first time around, simply because (gasp!) hours or even days can go by before I visit Slashdot again. For those like me, it's a chance to check out something cool.
For everyone else, y'all seem to jump on the 'it's a dupe, let's kill the editors again' bandwagon fast enough, so you must be recognizing these duplicate stories pretty fast. What's the harm? It's not like you have to read EVERY story.
The only seemingly valid complaint I see from people is 'my story got rejected cuz they keep posting dupes' - boo hoo. The next person that whines about their story being rejected should be shot full of (-1, Troll). Don't like the story submission process? Start your own site.
Beyond perpetuating the stereotype that everyone in CS is an unwashed social outcast, thereby making it very difficult for our student group to ever get funding... "all you folks want money for is to have LAN parties and Portman ogglefests".
There is a lab for higher up undergraduates on campus. Nice, high power machines. Poor ventilation. Cram 25+ unshowered people in there day and night, and see just how much you enjoy the smell. It's gotten so bad that I'm purchasing a laptop for next term, just so I can breathe again.
And no, I'm not making this up. Any CS student at the University of Manitoba is all too well aware of the legend of the Cargill lab.
Why are you making huge assumptions about those 10% of unemployed? Isn't it possible that many of them want to work? Haven't you ever been out of a job?
Thank you for stating my point ever so much more eloquently than I ever could have.
Rand was a bitter old crank; what exactly did she put in the novel that came true?
Well, I live in a country where 10% unemployment is considered GOOD. That's over 2 million people sitting on their asses, waiting to feed from the public trough. If you question their lack of work, you're labelled an evil capitalist, why don't you have some sympathy for those less fortunate? Going to high school it was very common for girls to plan on having a baby before hitting 18, so that they could collect welfare and not have to work for a living.
We have a large portion of society that seems to think it's entitled to other people's money, and our political system keeps giving them more and more of it - I don't know of a more accurate futurist novel.
Wow, your story parallels mine eerily. I graduated in 1996 with my B.Sc., microbiology major. Jobs that paid enough to live off were just about non-existent (this is what happens when several hundred people graduate with your degree EVERY YEAR in a city of half a million people).
Now, I'm 3/4 of the way through a CS degree, and enjoying school like I never have before. Sure, part of it is a little more maturity/experience, but I find now that I'm in something that I ENJOY, I couldn't care less if I'm learning about NP-Completeness today, or Java Beans tomorrow. Regardless, I'm about to enter a co-op work term that will pay $18/hr - and this is one hell of a lot above average salary around these parts (think closer to $12), even for people with university degrees (maybe $15 if you're lucky).
Good money, really fun work, this is the life. It's certainly NOT what I experienced in the bio field. Ironically enough though, I'll be graduating with my CS degree just as 'bioinformatics' (they've changed the buzzword for this a few times since I was in high school) is supposed to hit the big time. Would be kinda neat to have that microbio degree be worth somethign after all:)
The sixties and early seventies were a time of major societal upheaval and strong anti-technological sentiments, sending men to the moon rather than feeding the poor appeared to many as frivolous.
I'm just reading Atlas Shrugged for the first time, and it's amazing that this novel was written in 1957. It's like Rand planned the next 40 years of history.
Thank you for having the courage to post what noone else seems able to (including myself:).
What ever happened to people helping themselves, anyway? Why is everything always someone else's fault, no matter what?
"He ignored me because of a video game." Sorry, lady, he ignored you because he's an insensitive asshole. It's not that hard to turn off the damn computer once in a while, and pay attention to those you supposedly care about. If you don't, that shows more about how much you care than it does about some sort of 'addiction'.
the earliest referenda on that were held although the Swiss voted in a referendum about giving women the vote as early as 1914 (if I recall correctly), it was simply, democratically, rejected
Anyone else notice the irony of this?:)
Seeing as how men were the only voters at the time, etc...
"The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed ate are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown."
Just because the odd breakthrough comes from some really bizarre sounding theory, doesn't negate the fact that most crackpots are just that - crackpots.
Seriously, if all you've tried are the various compilations for the Playstation, you don't know what you're missing.
Take the NES games in Animal Crossing: BANG-ON EMULATION. I mean completely. This is what happens when the original company actually does the emulation.
Hell, most of the better emulators for the Dreamcast are pretty damn good too. But Nintendo's efforts for the Gamecube are nothing short of astounding. Personally, I can't wait to try the Sonic set.
In my 30 years on earth, I've never witnessed an xmas season that WASN'T synonymous with buying. For that matter, neither have my 60+ year old parents.
Oddly enough, they heard the exact same complaints when they were kids - "holidays aren't about presents, blah blah blah".
Oh yeah, all new music sucks too, but what our parents listened to is always bland "establishment" stuff.
We were the only generation to find ourselves different than the past.
For far too long every post where anyone dares say anything that even remotely links P2P and piracy is instantly modded down and disagreed with under the guise of freedom.
I don't know what version of Slashdot you've been reading, but your very post (and many more like it) is modded up to +3.
Break the law, get in trouble.
I can't quite figure where this attitude is coming from lately, maybe the anti-60's backlash is still with us. Believe it or not, there are a great many unjust laws on the books. And a great deal more that have been removed over time.
200 years ago it was legal to own slaves - does that mean it's ok? Whatever the current law says is right is what you should base your morals on? Try thinking for yourself once in a while, you may surprise yourself.

That wouldn't be anything close to news.
Too late.
There's a reason they're called 'boy' bands.

And throw away your vote? MUHAHAHAHAHA!
Sometimes the Simpsons is so accurate it's scary.

Frightening that in this day of continual, free information, elections are still basically a popularity contest.
And to think, you're not considered an apathetic voter if you see a candidate on television. Sad.
And the guy who invented to toilet was John Crapper. Doesn't make that fact any less true.
As Sagan so eloquently put it:
"The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed ate are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown."
Just because the odd breakthrough comes from some really bizarre sounding theory, doesn't negate the fact that most crackpots are just that - crackpots.
And amazingly enough, the /. article pointed out this very fact.
Mame doesn't emulate SMS games. Notice the 'A' in MAME stands for Arcade.

Anyone check out his 1992 predictions (for 2002)?
:)
this year's hot Hollywood hunk, teen star Macaulay Culkin
Ummm... yeah. And he claims he wasn't full of it back then
Spielberg did it as well for AI - he took a 10 minute story and stretched it out into 3 hours.
Oddly enough, 24 hrs of B's 9th seems to go by much quicker than Steven's attempt...
Clearly, there's nobody at OSDN owns one of these [thinkgeek.com] or we wouldn't have such slip-ups on slashdot :-)
:)
Heh. Before clicking on the link, I figured it had to be a computer
