Many of us haven't gone anywhere. I guess it depends on your industry but I see plenty of older developers around my office. There is such a shortage of quality developers that I think the jobs will be there for the older generation (fingers crossed).
I am going to try to stay with it for now at 45, since I prefer to actually build things rather than just talk about it in meetings!
Age is just an mindset/attitude anyway. If you love to learn and stay current, then you'll be fine.
Look into any kind of groups you have membership in especially professional associations. For example IEEE members (I believe after a year of membership) can get group health insurance, although I have not looked into lately it it may no longer be the case. Also organizations like AAA (yes the auto club) have discount prescription programs. Basically look at any group you belong to see if they have leveraged the power of their membership base to negotiate rates with insurance companies.
I love Gentoo and have used it for years, but it is not easy to maintain a server with an "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. Unless you keep up with the bleeding edge, simple updates are painful.
I wanted to update the ivtv driver which led to kernel re-compile, which lead me down the road of gcc upgrade and modular Xorg. What I ended up with was a complete mess, so I switched to Mythbuntu.
I will still use Gentoo for a Linux desktop environment but I doubt I will use it on servers that only need infrequent and specific updates.
So will the publisher at least provide a partial refund for the book since I bought it a few months ago, akin to what Apple did for the original iPhone purchasers. I am kidding of course since I believe in the free market and I felt the book was worth the investment. The people that overpaid for the iPhone then complained are idiots. They felt that the product was worth the price, just because it went down does not entitle them to a rebate. This is like venture capitalists and investors who put money in a company that goes under and sue for their money back. You knew the risk going in!
Clearly this is a plot by the English and Amercian toiletry industries. Everyone will be forced to buy shampoo, toothpaste, hair gel, etc. at their destination. THE HORROR!
Interestingly I just saw V for Vendetta last night. Strength through unity, unity through faith, England Prevails! (or something like that)
Seriously thanks for getting our back over the pond!
How are we right thinking Americans supposed to get to our favorite op-ed page when all you commies are slowing the site down!
Seriously though you have to allow authors to feed their families. It's not like they are rich Hollywood types. Google should get permission for publishing works. They would probably be suprised how many authors would freely release works!
SpaceShipOne is currently at the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles airport. I went there a couple of days ago and recognized it under a blue tarp by the hangar doors near the Concorde. It's a shame they don't uncover it, you can get pretty close to it. I guess they want to have a big unveiling when they move it downtown. http://www.spacealumni.com/index.php?option=com_co ntent&task=view&id=218&Itemid=9
FYI. The Science Channel will be airing a show tonight at 9pm EST. Why so late I don't know? Maybe to give NASA/ESA time to analyze the data and present some conclusions? If the probe has already landed I would think the data would be coming back before 12 hours from now?
Mod Parnet up. I was going to say this exactly. Private industry could do nuclear better. I am sure there are plenty of companies that would build nuclear power plants in say California, if the lefties would allow it.
I find this very strange coming out of an essentially socialist country. I know I am very concerned about privacy and would use that as a deciding factor when doing business. But then most Libertarians are concerned about freedom and privacy.
Why does he want to get trusted computing and DRM hardware running in Linux? I thought that was the kind of thing we were trying to avoid in Linux. Why should we trust M$ and the Trusted Computing Group

The link to this article was posted on Librenix earlier today so I got to read the whole thing before it got slashdotted. Is slashdot getting slow? Anyway I think I will switch to ReiserFS since that is what is recommended by Gentoo anyway.
Capitalism is not for the faint of heart. Maybe you were actually fired for cause or maybe your company thought outsourcing security was a better bang for the buck. Get over it and find another job. The big bad world doesn't owe you a thing. I know all you leftist wimps will be complaining, but if you don't like it go to one of the many socialist or communist countries whose economies are failing.
What would be cool is if DirecTV would allow someone to build a PC Card Tuner. Then you are right you could just pull the stream directly off the dish. I don't see this ever happening though.:(
I was also annoyed by the lack of privacy. Sure the machines appeared to work but we have no way of knowing if the vote was actually counted. With some very close races in my district I would like to see a re-vote.
Thanks for that great gotcha list. As a user of only commercial RDBMS systems, PostgreSQL will be my database for home use. I was having trouble getting through the FUD over this issue before.
Exactly! Go ahead and work less if you want to make less. Personally I am salaried and I am out the door exactly at 8 hours, and that's time enough for me. All you have to do is look at France to see how this system fails.
I looked on the java site and actually JAXM 1.1.2 is avaiable as an OPTIONAL library in JWSDP 1.2. I actually have production stuff running JAXM, so I was relieved to see this. They probably made it optional because Sun is fighting MS on the best way to handle Web Services. Sun prefers an RPC approach whereas MS prefers the SOAP Messaging method. Actually the only reason I am using JAXM is because the.NET Web Service I am calling doesn't play nice with JAX-RPC clients. So in answer to your question I think Sun will keep JAXM alive, albeit optional, because it is the Java implementation of the SOAP Messaging standard.
How i am supposed to frag terrorists in CS with this thing! According to the article it is either in mouse mode or keyboard mode at one time. QWERTY makes FPS fans happy.

Is this some sort of straw man they are throwing out to see if Oracle will "Go sue" them? If not then what is the source of the name?
I for one welcome our new byte counting overlords!

A quick look at the site, and I found this: http://www.scienceworksforus.org/virginia/u-va-receives-grant-to-study-effect-of-federal-stimulus-on-science-and-engineering-jobs
Stimulus money to study the effect of stimulus money!
Sure let's just keep printing money! I am sure the value of the dollar won't go down.

Anyway it is a good book, sorry for the rant.

Oh, really? Is that why you have to register every gun in the country with the Canadian government or face charges?

Good point gorbi. This book is just alarmist FUD.

Karma was good until this post

The Senate site has been slashdotted? I find that hard to believe but the site is definitely down. Anyone have info on this?
