It is a mountain kingdom, lots of hydro potential and very few people. Why would they want the infinite expense and risks involved with current nuclear? They can have free power without difficulty and hydro does not stop at night. It is easy for those here to say that anyone that does not want nuclear must be a crank or green but that is just stupid. I worked for BNFL and am not green (maybe a crank). I just happen to look at the whole picture without rose coloured glasses.

In Wales there are dams that were built by the Victorians and they are still good. The reactors I have worked with are not good but there is nothing you can do to stop a Magnox reactor. The British Magnox reactors are still running after their expected lifespan because no-one knows what to do with them. Trawsfynydd still consumes considerable amounts of electricity to keep it stable. The costs do not stop after the fifty years of lifespan. The costs go on and on for tens of thousands of years making them unbelievably expensive when compared to any other power source. Burning money in a generator would be cheaper.

There are better options and this decision is not the best way forward. I hope that advances will soon make Thorium into a good commercial choice. Anything but Uranium/Plutonium...

This case has gone way out there as 'anywhere in the world' implies that American law can be imposed on the rest of the world (something that the rest of the world is getting seriously pissed off with America trying to do). If he goes to another country and works he cannot be called to an American court to answer for it. When he returns said American court may not chose to understand that he was outside their jurisdiction... but hey, judges are all old and crazy. It does not matter where it was signed, what he does in another country is not to be considered in America except in limited situations and this is not one of those.

I doubt that they would have needed to change direction like everyone thinks. They needed to get their act together and sort out what they were doing but I think they could have aimed for the middle ground and kept a sizeable market. They still make some great dumb phones and not everyone wants a half hearted attempt at a computer weighing down their pocket. Do not get me wrong, I am happy for the /. crowd who want to have a cray in their pocket but most people out their do not see why they need so much power on a phone.

Not everyone needs or wants a touch screen but many of those want more than a dumb phone. Lots of us like a phone to be small and light which also means that it does not have a screen to browse the web on or watch HD video on. We do not need those things to make a call or listen to music on our way to work. I like to have a few extras, like good alarms and even GPS for emergencies (but google maps does not work without cell coverage so Nokia had a good system) but I will continue to use my laptop to browse the web and the TV to watch movies. This is my choice, I am not going to consider trying to convert anyone here but I know that I am not alone with this view. Since I started looking for a new phone a few months ago it has been surprising how many people have agreed with my rants and not just to shut me up. There is a good market for a small powerful phone. Nokia could have targeted that market and in the future it may grow.

It is all history now, they have cooked their goose. I think that someone will have got a good future out of this sell out but I doubt that anyone thinks it makes sense.

Have you even started to think this through? Any law that prosecutes one person for the crimes of another is madness and will do more harm to American businesses than the little gain that Microsoft will make from this. The only people that will really profit will be the lawyers (as usual). Very soon you will have lawyers searching through the records of any random company to find out who they are supplied by and they will search for an infringement without regard to whether or not there was any knowledge of said infringement. This is complete madness. How would you defend yourself against such an accusation? You cannot compel an oversees company to appear in a US court (but then neither can Microsoft). You could end up in a situation where one side bribes witnesses to appear and you cannot get a defence because they are all in India and do not want to set foot in the land of likely to be arrested even if they could get a visa.

Most of the companies that I have been involved with have ended up having to send a large team of workers to relocate to India (or other) to control the projects and the costs end up higher than if the work had not been outsourced. Nokia make good quality dumbphones that people want, people that buy Samsung may just be looking at price but many people want a good reliable phone that is for making calls. This category is the biggest market although it is not fairly represented on /. There is also the market that lies between the dumbphone and the smartphone and Nokia has that sown up. If they focus on what they are good at instead of being just another player in the mini tablet market I think they will quietly do better than all the others. Apple have had their moment and will do their best to capitalise on it and the others will swamp the market with droids. Most people that are not here on /., do not really want to carry a housebrick that can do things that they have no need for. Most people want a phone that will fit comfortably in their pocket and is only used to make calls. I am in the middle market and once the fad has worn off, I think that the middle market will grow. I may be wrong but it will always be a good market that will be left empty if Nokia leaves. Many of us do not want to pay for computer power on a phone that we do not use. I would rather spend that money on a better laptop.

I do use GPS and am often out of cell range, therefore I do not want to need Google maps etc. I can use Nokia Maps in the mountains, far from the nearest cell and it has got me out of trouble a couple of times (I am a 4x4 nut). I like good music on my phone and a backup camera, that is all. After this merger, I will probably buy a real GPS for the truck and a dumbphone. I cannot see any reason to buy a load of stuff I do not want. I think Sony sound OK for me now; good music and a decent dumbphone.
