"Mandrake Linux 9.2 is a "100% Free Software" product. This means that everyone is granted the right to access the sources, modify and redistribute the software"
Funny then that this download is only for paying memembers. Like some others have pointed out, public Bittorent link please. If its truly free redistribute it. I like Mandrake, but I respect the right to access free software a hell of a lot more.
Gimmie a fucking break. If I read an article that said Microsoft was killing babies I'd be first to say what a load of crap.
"I only read what I want to hear and ignore others perspectives, right or wrong.
No see there is where you wide brush fails you. This isn't about "perspectives" this is about outright lies. And No we don't want to listen to them and nor should we have to. If this were about benchmarks or the debate on whether closed or opensource is more secure you would have a point. But its not. This is just pure slander with zero technical merit or basis in reality.
It's clear this writer has a true hate for linux and the GPL and isn't going to let a little thing like the truth get into the way.
The things the FSF is asking for here is just what is right legally and morally and for that they get slandered.
"Will Cisco and Broadcom be the first? Probably they'll decide, like everyone else, that it's cheaper to settle than to fight.
Such a pity, comrade."
My response: I dunno, should they actually respect a product's licensing or should they continue to illegally distribute software they don't own?
Such a pity, you don't realize this is about billion dollar companies trying to steal and coopt the work of volunteers.

"Addressing several thousand attendees at the Worldwide Partner Conference, he took a swipe at Linux, open source and StarOffice, saying, "they simply accept the view that what they have is good enough. That view does not foster innovation. Being where we were with Office 1997 is not good enough for us," he said."
Microsoft admitting that OO is already equal to something they spent millions and millions on and also happens to be much more widely used than Office XP is the best thing they could have said.
I mean that. Office 97 is still very popular. One of the biggest challenges MS has is moving people off that since many businesses find that Office 97 is all they need. The fact they think OO has met the quality level that most of world thinks is "good enough" is excellent news.
Congrats to the OpenOffice.org team and thanks to Microsoft for the marketing material.
"That's one thing that's really holding you open source guys back"
YeeHaw!! I now am now officially rich!!! You see I patented the phrase "That's one thing that's really holding you open source guys back" back in the mid 90's because I just KNEW I'd get to hear it over and over and over and over again.
A big thanks go out to all of you who made this possible. I'd especially like to thank those of you who used this phrase with regards to "ease of use". Now that I've read it 200,000 times I am set for retirement.
Like a few others have pointed out there is little possibility of Longhorn being what Win95 was. I just don't see it "crushing" every OS out there. Most MS boosters I know don't even feel that way.
I could give a bunch a reasons why that's not likely such as how good OS X will be by then also how much better linux will be, or the fact that there will probably be little reason to upgrade from XP. Remember Win 3.1 was a piece of shit that was not user friendly and crashed ever 5 minutes. The competition for Longhorn is going to be the stable and easy to use trio of XP, OS X and "Linux". Once people find something that works, it game over, do not upgrade.
They defintely will get to enjoy the OEM lockin which will bolster their numbers, but like I said I see XP being around with us for a long long time and in 3 years time OS X and Linux will be a force to be reckoned with.
Next week the Brazilian Government will get fat check for $300 Million for its schools and government. Next they will the option to purchase Windows Xp and Office 2003 for the low low price of two coconuts.
Letters of intent to develop initiatives probably won't mean much once MS is done with them. Let's hope IBM can keep their foot in the door.
Switch to Rythmbox. XMMS is caught in a timewarp like you said. Fine if your one of the rare people who creates hundreds of playlists but not really practial for a lot of people. You could also try Zinf. It also unlike XMMS at least makes an attempt to try to make navigating and organizing your music collection possible.
Apple is afraid of Linux and they in No way want to give creedence to it being an acceptable platform for desktop use. Apple's nightmare is 3rd party vendors like Adobe porting their products to Linux. If some of the traditional Apple ISV's started porting to Linux Apple would be totally fucked. Hence Apple is hardly eager to get the ball rolling in that direction.
That's why you'll never see Apple porting any desktop apps to Linux.
Quicktime isn't exactly the best performing multimedia app going on Windows. Its a bit slow and files that play perfectly on low end Macs can play like crap on fairly high-end PC's.
I also hope it themeable because by default the color it pretty ugly. I don't know that much about ITunes, but one thing I do know is that unless it obeys XP themes or like I said is themeable, its going to stick out like a sore thumb.
Either way I still look forward to trying it out when I get a chance and also of course trying out the Music store.
"It's bloated beyond belief, slow as hell, unresponsive, doesn't have many special/exclusive features that people would want (other than javascript controls) etc"
This is pure FUD and anyone stupid enough to mod this up should have their points taken away.
ACPI on Linux has a long long way to go. The official line last time I checked was that there were so many not fully documented ACPI implementations that they couldn't possibly cover them all. This of course is hard to argue with. At the same time its defintely a bit of a letdown when you consider how well linux is doing these days regarding hardware support. You all don't know how easy you have it compared to how it used to be.
For anyone who wants to use Linux on their laptop make sure and do your research. I'm not saying that's its not possible to use linux on your laptop(duh I'm typing this from my RH laptop) but realize that it may take a bunch of work to get all/any of the acpi features to work as well as they do on Windows.
No Doom3 and no HL2 this year? Right? Wow what a letdown 2003 was for gaming. Yea I know everyone here can probably name a bunch of games that came out that they like, but they just can't be compared to what these two meant. These two games are the ones that will define what "state of the art" is for both single player FPSers and online gaming for years to come.
This not only affects us gamers, but also cpu and graphics cards vendors. These people were counting on these specific titles to finally convince people that you needed a 2GHz+ cpu and a $300 DX9 graphics card. When the game you want to play is 6 months away why be stupid and buy a new system now? Even worse you'd still be foolish to buy a new cpu or gpu for Christmas because in the 3-4 months up till either game is released both of those items could drop by well over $100.
I see a lot of Gamecubes being bought the Christmas and a lousy sales period for cpu and gpu vendors. Me I'm just bummed because something I've been looking forward to for so long is put off yet again.
"Apple has never claimed it beats anything on the PC market, just that it is the fastest desktop available"
Not to nitpick but even that's not correct. The AMD 64 is and also contrary to Apple's marketing they didn't put of the first 64-bit desktop either, AMD has that honor as well.
I think half of the reason people give Apple such crap is because of outright lies like this. If Apple just claimed they gave the best "user experience" I don't think most people would argue. It's the marketing BS they've been putting out with the Gx series that makes them look like a bunch of idiots to a technical audience such as the one here.
"But closed source software is not punished in the market. Closed source software is substantially favored."
I keep reading these posts where people keep saying "let's be fair" and "it's not right to exclude commercial software". Well guess what. That's exactly what has been happening to OpenSource Software for years now. Inferior closed source commercial software has dominated the scene to too long and its time we get to take a shot. What so some "inferior" opensource software gets promoted just because its opensource. Too bad. Welcome to the other side of the fence. At least with opensource you can fix it yourself or hire someone to fix it for you.
The world could do a lot worse then to lock out closed source software where an opensource equivalent is available. Once opensource is entrenched and has become de-facto then talk to me about the "rights" of commercial providers.
Well wouldn't you if you had just spent $6k on a TV that's not compatable anymore?
That's why I won't be buying into HDTV anytime soon.
HDTV and the legislation that needlessly forced it onto an uninterested public is the biggest scam in the past 25 years. All of those companies are "advised" our government on HDTV 20 years ago are a bunch of criminals. Of course nobody goes to jail for white-collar crime. Download an MP3 on the other hand...
"but if someone comes up with better system that can boot my Linux system as fast as my XP system boots, I'm game."
I do find it interesting that anyone beside embedded developers care about Linux boot times. I guess dual-booters might need this, but then again booting and dealing with two different OS's on the same machine is always going to involve some headache.
I mean really how often do you have to reboot your linux box? This isn't the days of Win95 where you had to reboot daily. The most your should ever have to do on a linux box is Cntrl-Alt-Bkspace to restart X because something went way wrong. If your actually having to reboot your linux box more than once a month your either playing with too many kernels or have a serious hardware problem.
While I agree that speeding up boot time is a "good thing" for me just isn't an issue.
My thoughts exactly. I don't care if its unsupported (yea like game companies actually provide decent support)I'll download any unofficial port available. This way Valve gets money from me for buying the actual box at Compusa and I get to play on my preferred OS.
What are we supposed to wait 3 years for XP and OSX along with Premire and Photoshop all to go 64bit then benchmark?
The benchmark is correct. These are the apps that people are going to be running NOW and for the next few years so they are the ones which matter.

Your well ahead of 95% of consumers.

No doubt this is a HUGE stretch of the truth. For anyone wondering it is NOT necessary to patch your kernel every week.
Why because then the poll would be accurate?
I hate when polls get ballot stuffed.
before any spelling nazi points it out creedence was a mistake it should obviously be credence.
