Good observation. I know with my Weblog/personal site (if you can call it that), I use the daily diary as filler between content postings. Because much of the content takes time to post.

We do help and support other countries. Examples:
    • Through the U.S. Agency for International Development the United States provides $62 million in aid for health care, water system repairs and emergency food
    • US food aid to Africa
    • Natural disaster aid (e.g. aid to central america after Hurricane)

Sometimes the help is military. Example: Balkans. So no, we can't win no matter how much good we do or try to do.

It seems straight forward so long as you hire a decent project team to see it through. Unfortunately is is more likely that inexperienced people ran the project (probably relatives or friends of some politician), it was a low cost bid (sometimes you get what you pay for), there was poor user interface testing, and a raft of other government requirments/corruptness screwed up the project.

Maybe they should have hired Apple to build the machines. Presenting: "iVote"!

Every economic principle has selfish and corrupt aspects. Communism: the central planners must rule with an iron fist to make everyone conform. Socialism: government officials seem to benefit while the middle class runs in place.

This quote sums it up nicely:

Here is some actual marketing language from a software company (not Microsoft but it is typical):

ABC Software is the leading global provider of business integration solutions. The world's leading companies rely on ABC to transform their businesses through integration. Our solutions bring together incompatible applications and systems to enable real-time processes, improved performance, and enhanced business visibility.

This is useless. And unfortunately most of the specific product solutions rely on the same crap. I want to know specifically how the product works. For example, "Our software connects directly to your database records, converts the elements to xml spec of your choosing, encrypts the data so your developers can build to it or it may be transmitted over the Internet". I hope you see where I am going. Software companies simply have no idea how to communicate what their software does. Many developers can't communicate in understandable terms, and marketers don't know the technology.

The profit margins may be thin, but what are the music execs scraping off of revenues in bonuses that in effect hurt the bottom line? What is their free cash flow. Net profits can sometimes be deceiving.

You use Sony as an example. They are not just a music company. They sell electronics, movies too. Their annual report states that Sony had the largest consolidated sales ever. Sony music in 2002 earned operating income of $152 million on 4.8 billion in sales.

Sony's music business segment increased by a total of 5% in 2002(page 12 - not bad for a lousy economic year).

In the case of Sony, their music business is not in bad shape at all. Don't forget the book value of their music catalog too.
