I don't think that less cost necessarily leads to purchasing more products. If anything it means companies will spend LESS overall on software and shift the money they were going to spend into other areas...
Well, I'm sure he has speakers hooked up to his XM radio and if he has speakers, he can always hop on down to the local radio shack and pick up two RCA connectors and a couple of lengths of wire. Voila, a connector!
Now that all the hard work and volunteering has paid off and PHP is a worldwide success, it appears that PHP could soon be another corporate shill owned by Sun, MySQL, Borland and Macromedia, if not on paper, then by direct influence on the people at Zend. Of course it will remain open source so that those half-million developers can continue to contribute their time and genius to its success, but if those thousands of contributions lead to direct financial gain for companies whose coffers are already overflowing and are simultaneously using those contributions to manufacture software with price tags out of reach to anyone but corporations, is PHP still the language developers should be focusing on for use in the open-source community?
It seems to me that the situation he's describing here is much like RedHat 'shilling' Linux for profit. Now, of course, I recognize that Linus et al aren't part of RedHat, but the end effect is the same, really, just further down the timeline.
PHP is at the state right now where Linux was before people started forking off various distros.
I'm not particularly concerned that PHP will become 'commercialized' any more than I am that Perl is 'commercialized' by ActiveState. The language and the community is more than the sum of a few key people, or even companies involved. The community around it is the main strength, and it's that ubiquitiousness that's the core of PHP, not the language itself.
1) Open source gives away software for free. 2) Giving something away for free is anti-capitalist. 3) Anti-capitalism is Communism! 4) Communists don't think like you and I do. 5) You or I would never kill a puppy. 6) As neither of us would kill a puppy, and communists don't think like you or I do, communists will kill puppies. 7) Therefore, Open Source Kills puppies. 8) Hence: Chewbacca.

I saw their video on MuchMusic (like MTV in Canada) and really liked it. I had planned to go plunk down my bux to get it, but now that I see it's copy protected, I think I'll pass. Can't see myself giving money to people who don't appreciate having me as a customer.
I wish my courses had been like this in College =\, it looks so INTERESTING. We spent endless hours in Data Structures class following the passing of ACK/NAK packages for various protocols. I still have the occasional flashback.
OMG, wouldn't that be considered weapons of mass destruction? George Dubya be kikin yer door down homez.

I agree. Cutting out your customer's purchasing power is never a good step. I don't think there's many people in India working for $3 an hour that will be willing to spend $600 on a word processor. Pesky things like food and luxuires like medicine and clean water and reasonable housing will be on the list.
As NewSpeak Martha would say:
It's a doubleplusgood thing!
Yeah, to hell with counterfiting money, counterfit ink cartridges! It's like liquid gold hehe.

If you outlaw paradigms, how would you make change for a quarter then? Carrying around all those nickles and pennies would suck.

I keep NAKing them, but they seem to have malformed headers.

Didn't Apple just pay off it's last outstanding debt and is now debt free? Clearly they suck. Bad Steve, paying off your debts.
