To this day, I still can't see much difference between HD and regular TV on my 50" LCD. If you can't see the different then you don't have an HD signal going to your TV. It's night and day even with the high compression some cable companies do to their signals. Next time football is on look at the standard channel and then switch it to the HD channel, if you still can't see the difference you might need to have your eyes checked;)
I don't think its fair to single MAC OS out for this either. As far as I know most mainstream OS seem to handle move operations with media exceptions badly. I agree. I always copy then delete, especially when dealing with network shares. Windows used to lose data if anything went wrong when moving something across the network. I don't have a Vista box handy to test if it is still an issue.
That said, I've never understood why move isn't implemented as a copy, check, delete and only be destructive before completing if the move process figures out you don't have enough space and then prompts you.
No, seriously. You want a cut of iPod revenues? Do you make hardware? Do you demand a cut of the manufacturers who produce DVD players? Do you demand a cut of the Internet carriers? Come on now. How about sticking to content creation and paying good writers to create quality content?
What's funny is that this is exactly what Apple just did with ATT. Without content what would be the use of an ipod? Not that I agree with either stance though.
I only know of one person with a 360. We've been playing it for about a year and it suddenly died with the RRoD (luckily they did that warranty extension right before his died). He sent it back under warranty and the new one they sent him was RRoD out of the box. So now he's waiting for another one to be sent to him.
Late 90s in fact. My family didn't have much money so I lived at home while working and going to school. I was working in a restaurant so my hours varied week to week, but I only took 12 hours/semester (and summer school to make up the difference) so I had the time to work and do school. When I was a junior I got a part time job writing software and then moved full time when I graduated. When I graduated and went full-time, I suddenly had all this free time that I never knew existed. It was fun for awhile, but now I'm in grad school while working full time.
Can you get a fixed rate IO loan? I don't believe I've ever seen one, and I always thought the whole point on the IO loan was that you could just pay interest if you wanted and that the teaser rate was low so that the initial payment was low. Of course the rate eventually adjusts upwards. Wouldn't it make more sense to lock in a fixed 30 or 15 where you're free to pay all you want above and beyond and have a historically low rate locked in?
I thought for sure yours or the drunk drivers car insurance would pay for some of those bills. That sucks that you got stuck with 80k in debt for just not having medical insurance.
They do eat it when you file bankruptcy. They don't get anywhere near the amount of money you spent back to them in form of payments.
How about this. Since you have *NO SOURCE OF INCOME*, don't get a credit card! Is personal responsibility really that poor in this country now? It's always someone else's fault and never your own. And yes, when I was in college those same people were there giving away stuff to get a CC. That's also when I got my first CC, but it wasn't a problem b/c my parents had taught me about managing money years earlier. It's not very complicated and can be distilled down to two rules:
1) Spend less than you make.
2) Always be working because when you're working not only are you making money, but you're also not spending it.
By the way, while in college I was working 30 hours/week to, you know, pay for college.
I agree that the gov. shouldn't be bailing out the banks. It pissed me off when they lowered the funds rate. In the end I don't think it will change anything with respect to all of the questionable housing loans that have been granted. It also won't be the banks holding the bag. Most of these questionable loans were made then packaged up and sold on the open market. The banks will end up being mostly free and clear here. I made sure awhile back that none of my investments had RE hidden in them b/c it didn't take a genius to see the end was near.
No, of course not. It is the governments fault that usury laws were rewritten because of lobbying pressure from credit card companies. This is why they can legally charge 30% interest. (Which used to be criminal literally!) It is why someone who charges $20,000 worth of stuff can easily pay out over $25,000 and end up still owing more then $30,000! (or more)
I think CC companies (and anyone for that matter) should be able to charge any interest rate they want to as long as it's clearly documented to person getting the loan. No one has to charge 20k worth of stuff. What ever happened to saving up to buy something? I would hope that by this point everyone knows that carrying a balance on a CC is a bad financial move. Why do people still do it?
The credit card companies have paid good money for our government and that has insured that not only will they get additional chances to suck us dry, but they can also get a chance at an additional year of blood sucking because of some very good lobbying.
What happened to personal responsibility? No one is forcing you or anyone else to use your CC beyond what you can pay off each month. I have a CC I use for the protections it provides and convenience. I don't even know what the rate on the card is b/c I pay it off in full each month. I also save money each month (crazy idea I know!) so that I can be prepared for an emergency.
Slow down for a second. Is is the govs. fault that people use credit without thinking of the consequences? There are times where people have bad luck (medical for example) and I feel for them when they have to file for bankruptcy, etc... But people who spend way more than they make, drive cars they can't afford, and buy houses with IO loans I have no sympathy for. Raising the minimum payment on credit cards was actually a good thing for the consumer. Now they are forced to pay it off sooner than they would have otherwise.
I agree that Apple is stretched beyond its resources at the moment. They've even admitted as much when they delayed the next OS X because they were working on the iPhone. Personally I hate the iPhone, because from what I can tell it's destroying Apple from a company management standpoint. They are dealing with resource constraints now, getting more heavy handed than they have ever been when it came to hacking their devices and pre-announcing products to manage stock price. I wonder if we'll (other apple supporters/fanboys) look back and see the iPhone as the jump-the-shark moment for Apple?
It's possible this has happened, but has MS pushed down an update to the xbox which bricked it (prevented it from ever playing games) if it had a modchip?
Another thing that the author misses is that these sorts of fights happen all the time between engineers. When it comes to linux we get to see the fights because of the open nature of its development. Do people not think fights happen in MS over features and engineering decisions?
I would also argue that fights like this are a good thing. They force people to think about prove their position.
I love the BMW 3 series, because it is an engineering marvel, at any cost, and would never buy it as a status-symbol. I would buy it because it is a GREAT car and I could care less what the rest of you think.
You should check out the Infinity G35 (or it might just be G now). At least when I looked a couple years ago they had better performance and were less expensive than the 330. Now, a friend of mine used to have an M5. All I can say is wow! Talk about an amazing piece of machinery.
Hmm, I was in Tokyo a couple months ago with my new MBP and I never had any problems connecting to a wireless network. Perhaps they were all using channels other than 14...
First off, it's anyones right to be a bigot. After reading about this story it looks like to me that many in that, both black and white, are bigots. The racial tensions there have been growing for a long time.
With that said, the racial tensions need to be ignored when looking at the current case. Someone was beaten by 6 others. That was a crime and those 6 others should be charged. Supporting the 6 who did the beating makes no sense to me. Are we saying it's okay to beat down someone? Is vigilante justice the way to go now? Does not liking a certain group of people for whatever reason give them the right to come and beat that person down?
Bingo! Now I haven't looked at what iD is doing lately, but I remember them doing something in their older games like what you describe. Write the game to their own abstraction layer and then they just have to write a 'driver' to interface whatever lower level API they want to. Now you may lose the ability to use some of the DX utility functions that make writing graphics quicker/easier, but I doubt Carmack has ever needed to use those anyway. I would think at this point he has his own library of fast, efficient graphic functions that he can pull from and use.
I have a 30gb video. I got it for a few reasons...
a) It just works....put songs in itunes they show up on the ipod. I don't have to think about it.
b) The scroll wheel interface is very easy to use.
c) Third party support. One of my goals was to rid myself of all CDs, especially in my car. So, I also have an Alpine head unit in my car which plugs into the docking port on the ipod and allows for full control through the HU itself (not the one I have but this one is very cool). This feature alone pretty much locks me into using ipods for the foreseeable future. It also, to circle back around a), just works.
Then, of coarse, there is the new iPod Nano Video, with its tiny screen. This isn't Tokyo, impractically small electronics have never taken off in America, and the new Nano will be no exception.
Wasn't the original nano very small? It seems to have taken off quite well.
I still have a 36" SD tube TV because to match its picture in a LCD HD TV I'm going to have to spend a ton of money. Sure there are similar size HDTVs I can get, but their pictures suck.
(yes, I've been playing on emulators on my PC since 2000, I still prefer the VC)
Totally agree here! I've been playing my old Nintendo favorites on the emu's for years, but it never felt right b/c I didn't have a Nintendo control and I hated sitting at the computer to do it. I finally bought the zelda VC game for the Wii a couple weekends ago and can't believe how much fun that game still is to play! Metroid is next when I have some free time:)
I couldn't agree more. Took me months to find the last guy we hired. We finally started posting on the job board at the local college and found a bright kid fresh out of school. He didn't know the exact skills we were looking for, but was smart and motivated.
I don't think companies like MS and IBM have any problem paying top dollar for qualified engineers. It's no secret that the US has fallen behind the rest of the world in math and science, which one could speculate is affecting the quality of US engineers.
I agree. Value is a personal decision. The iphone wasn't worth $600 to me or $400 for that matter. I was mainly replying to the early adopters who suddenly feel they got ripped off. The value of their phone to them didn't change when Apple lowered the price.
That said, I've never understood why move isn't implemented as a copy, check, delete and only be destructive before completing if the move process figures out you don't have enough space and then prompts you.
