A month or two back I had to use Word for something or other. As usual Clippy appeared. I finished doing what I was doing and closed Word. For some odd reason Clippy decided it was high time he 'broke free' from Word ("I hate this place, this zoo, this prison, this reality, whatever you want to call it. I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell...... I must get out of here" maybe?)

Anyway, after Word had closed, Clippy remained on my desktop. He wasn't giving advice, telling me he thinks I SHOULD type a letter, offering crack, etc. He was just stood there, occasionally bouncing, changing shape, blinking, etc.

Quite frankly, it disturbed me. Now I don't know whether this was a 'feature' but he sure as hell wouldn't fuck off. In the end I had to reboot, thus cutting short Clippy's break for freedom.

  6. Re:Overclocking on Athlon Xp 3200+ 400FSB is Coming · · Score: 1

I disagree here. I have an XP2100 Tbred b that I paid £70 for. It's currently running at 2.2GHz (13*170fsb). It's at 1.65v and Prime95 runs stable. I have an SLK800 with AS3 and a Thermaltake Smart Fan 2 (Adjust from 1300rpm -silent to 4800rpm - Jet Engine) I usually have the fan set to around 2000rpm. My temps are about 40c idle and 46c load. There are 4 other case fans but are all silent Papst fans and controlled by a fan controller. My Ti4400 has a Zalman Heatpipe cooler.

With all the fans off and the HSF at 2000rpm my machine is virtually silent with the exception of a fairly quiet fan in my Enermax PSU. Temps may reach 50c on a hot day which is where the fan controller comes into play, but even with the 4 Papst fans on, it's still a lot quiter than other coputers I come across.

If my motherboard was an nforce (instead of the crappy VIA KT333 I have) then I'd probably reach 2.4GHz.

As for safe, if the CPU temp exceeds 60c, the computer shuts down. If the fan fails, the computer shuts down.

So is overclocking dumb? Well I wouldn't say so, a 500MHz - 700MHz increase is definitely noticeable and more value for money compared to the more expensive AMD chips that barely come close to these speeds and don't overclock that well. You don't necessarily have a computer that sounds like a helicopter either, you just have to invest in some decent hardware. The Papst fans weren't too expensive, neither was the Zalman for the gfx, the SLK800 is around £40 but it's a great heatsink and I'm sure it'll last fine for a while yet.

Many places will recycle old cartridges but these places exclude Epson. So what option does that leave? Throwing them out in the trash? I'd rather not do that so right now they're building up in a storeroom. Hopefully in the near future somewhere will start to recycle Epson cartridges.

A lot of places offer money for empty inkjet cartridges, maybe £2-£3, except all these places won't accept Epson cartridges. Why? Because of the chips. At the moment they're just building up in a corner because I'd really like to get them recycled and hate to think of environmental damage that may be caused. We go through about 8 Epson cartridges a week, unfortunately Epson printers seem to produce the best quality so I don't think a change in printers is likely.

What if you get in a confrontation, accident, etc and want to take a quick picture? Hey this might enable police to find your killer if you get a chance to take a snapshot

I agree, that would be helpful. The problem, here in the UK anyway, is that's it just far too expensive to use these services. This causes a knock on effect. The provider brings out a service (WAP for example), it's expensive so only a handful of people use it, provider thinks no one is interested so brings out another service (GPRS). New service is even more expensive and so the same thing happens. No one bothers to use it because of the cost, provider thinks it's useless again and roll out something else (MMS). Now MMS is even more expensive, ridiculously expensive from what I've seen (just looked but couldn't get a price, although it's daft money).

I'd love to be able to use GPRS, bring the price down and I'll put it to use. Until then, continue bringing out your new services and gimmicks and I'll continue to watch them fail.

And as for getting a snapshot of your killer, you're assuming they didn't kill you for your phone in the first place.
  15. Dead Drives on Tom's Investigates Hard Drive Warranty Changes · · Score: 1, Interesting

I once had a Seagate die on me for no reason whatsoever, boot sector got buggered, Windows was a pain to boot, and eventually, after replacing, it wasn't even usuable to just store things on. Sure, you could copy data to it, it was another thing if you wanted to copy that data back again, or open it.

there was also a computer in our office and one night, as we were getting ready to go, someone could smell burning. Upon investigation we discovered it was coming from the computer. We turned it off, left for the night and I examined it in the morning. I couldn't see the problem, but after removing the Hard Drive, a Quantum Fireball, and looking underneath I was shocked to see that one of the chips on the controller had, well, how do i put it, set on fire? There was a big scorch mark from the centre of the chip, and then a long line of burning across to the edge of the chip and then onto the pcb. I contacted Maxtor (they bought Qauntum, in case you're unaware) and they wouldn't do anything with it and they pointed me in the direction of a company who would rescue the data if I so wished. After finding out the price, I declined. If I remember correctly, Maxtor was aware of this problem with this drive and this disturbed me a little. If we'd left a little earlier, maybe that computer would have gone up in flames and taken the entire office with it.

I now own a Western Digital in my own computer, I'm happy with it but Hard Drives are probably the single most important part of a computer in terms of time, effort, work, etc. Hard Drive warranties should be 3 years minimum, these companies know damn well that they'll last 12 months fine (most times), it's when you get to the 2 year - 3 year period you're drive is likely to fail.

As Hard Drives get bigger, and now that the warranty is reduced, what options of backup are there that are simple and cost effective? I want to be able to put an identical drive in a machine and set it to mirror Drive A every night at a certain time. Can RAID do this? (Sorry, new to this whole RAID thing). From what I have read before on /. RAID is not really a great option for backup.

What annoys me mostly about the whole mobile phone thing is the way new technology comes along and is thrown out the window before it even comes into use.

Let's see, there was WAP. Slow, expensive, not around that long before GPRS came about. GPRS has been around for what? Just over a year? Again, too expensive to become mainstream and what happens now? We have Java and MMS. MMS is even more expensive than previous offerings and my guess is, before we get any chance to make use of it it will have been replaced by bluetooth and 3G in the next year or so.

If they lowered the price of these services to a reasonable level, then maybe we'd actually get some use out of them, maybe my girlfriend would actually be able to use mobile internet through the Nokia 8310 I bought her.
