Wireless isn't the only thing holding back Linux on the Laptop. It needs to have full, native ACPI support as well. Get these working as well as they work in Windows, and Linux becomes a killer mobile OS.
Actually, I can envision all sorts of tablet devices running Linux. LinuxPADD, anyone?
Sure, if you scrolled through enough random characters, eventually you'd find the complete works of Shakespeare, but:
1. You'd already need to know what the complete works of Shakespeare looks like in order to recognize it (and therefore, you would be getting zero information you didn't already have) and 2. In order to address the starting location of said works in the random stream, you would need, on average, as many bits as are in the whole works to begin with!
Thus, the random stream still contains zero information.
It won't be long before the only way you can afford an apartment is to have advertisers "sponsor" your walls, blanketing them with adverising. As part of your contract, you will no longer be allowed to display competetors' products, or be found in breach of contract and jailed.
But it's like talking to a brick wall. They see this as a "protecting against theft" issue, and no amount of oration will change their minds. The concepts of freedom to invent and create without worrying about being liable for any and every violation that might produce is lost on them. The concept of fair use, and reasonable limits to copyright are lost on them.
Someplace to dump excess garbage. It's not going to be a problem until the environmetal rammifications are discovered.
I see no environmental ramifications of shooting fission waste into the sun. The only problems are those of safety (exploding several tons of slow-decaying radioactive material several miles above Florida would probably be a Bad Thing).
The rest of our garbage can be recycled or reclaimed by the bioshpere fairly easily. In a few decades, problems concerning conventional garbage/pollution will be a thing of the past.

remember that, early on, there was none of this cliche "hive mind" and "alien queen" junk.
IIRC, when Q first introduced the Enterprise to the Borg, Troi sensed the presence of only one mind, and they made it clear that the whole cube was acting with a singular will.
The "queen borg" thing was a disgrace, I'll grant you that.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
As long as this is being adhered to, I'm cool with it.
Step two: Neural interfaces, getting around all of those pesky "physical" operations (finger waving, eyeball cues, etc). One can participate in society completely as a "ghost," without lifting a single finger.
Step three: Network the neural interfaces. "Shared brainstorming" will be considered the fast-track method of advancing science and technology.
Step four: Reassign the "physical substrate" to menial tasks. If I can participate fully in society WITH MY MIND, why not rent out my body to work in the factories or operate the machinery? It's not like I actually need my body for anything else - might as well let it be a "drone."
Step five: Shared neural experience of human society slowly breaks down the boundaries between one human and another; a "hive mind" emerges.
I'm moving to Norway. My grandmother's a Norwegian-American. Is that enough to get me in? I hear they actually speak English better than Americans do...
was that Cringely would go the way of Jon Katz. Who knew he'd still be showing up in /. articles all these years later?

I dunno. You're all still posting with the handle "Anonymous Coward" as far as I can tell.

But zero Information. ;-)
Accroding to the chart, this happened back on May 5 (5/11/04). I don't get it!
Has anyone yet registered the domain "georgebushisamoronbutimvotingforhimanyway.com" yet?
(as in Philip K.)

advertising fascism?

To their credit, they are hardly the first governing body to respond to the spectre of terrorism with a crackdown on civil liberties
"Must have a pulse" is no longer a requirement. :-)

I give up.

Resistance is futile.
The EU will pass the same stupid laws.

Too bad that they eat old people's medicine for fuel.
