"Right, they aren't prisoners of war. To be a prisoner of war you have to follow the Geneva convention ON THE BATTLEFIELD. You know, wear a uniform, identifiable markings"

Ok, so what are they? If they were imprisoned on the US mainland then surely they are subject to US law and so are *innocent until +proven+ guilty*. They haven't been allowed the minimum of justice. If they are not prisoners of war then they should be held and tried in the country they were captured in. You can't have your cake and eat it.

"They're brigands. Little more than pirates. Frankly, they're lucky they weren't just lined up and shot."

So why are they any different from, say McVeigh the Oklahoma bomber. Is it because they aren't US citizens? So the US state is racist now? You can't just arbitrarily remove the rights of individuals because of what they did or who they are. That is how the rot starts as it has done before.

"You got evidence of torture? Bring it on. There is none. Three squares, clean clothes, prayer mats, exercise yard, the works. Their conditions are equal to and better than typical prisons".

So prisoners are typically led around with bags on their heads? People in the US are regularly locked up, deprived of their freedom, with out trial? You *must* treat everyone equally. Anything else leads the road to ruin.

"I wonder how France would have treated these guys...you might want to check out their kindly ways during the Algerian and Vietnamese wars..."

I don't care how France treated people. That is past. How they and other nations treat people now and in the future is important. As I said before you don't just have to carry out justice you have to be seen to be carrying out justice. Anything else just isn't good enough and makes you as bad as the bad guys.

Is this the same freedom that the US prisoners down in Cuba have. They are not prisoners of war (and so the Geneva convention is not being followed) and they are not prisoners of the State (because they have no legal representation). The US was one of the few countries that did *NOT* sign up to the UN anti-torture pact in 1984. And despite finally signing up to it 10 years later tried to block the treaty.

For any country (including the UK) to have the moral imperetive it must be *seen* to be better than the bad guys. That's just not happening.

You and me both. The last estimate put 85% of the UKs population as cell phone owners. I originally bought a cell phone because I ride motorcycles and some of them are classics (ie old and knackered!) and so when they go wrong, which they do every now and then, I can call the recovery people and get myself home again.

Now I can't live without it. Me and my phone are inseparable. To me it's not just a phone it's a portable communications device. Yes I can receive and make calls with it (I use profiles to determine which calls I actually want to handle and which I want to automatically forward on to my voice mail), I can text people, I can send and receive e-mail (I used that recently to send an e-mail to my boss to tell him I was running late because my train to work had mechanicals problems). I can access information sites such as train time tables, the news headlines, phone directories and the like. In fact many of the uses of my phone mean I *don't* actually have to talk to people. Finally I use it as a walkman (MP3s).

I hardly ever use a land line. But I'm not being disturbed all the time by my cell phone rining. Because I live a life which means I'm often on the move the phone is an essential way of keeping in touch with my nearest and dearest. I see my cell phone as a social tool. I really can't understand the phobia that many slashdotters (predominently american) have of cell phones.

You want a T68i and one of these the Ericsson MP3 player. Although it doesn't list the T68i as a compatable phone it works fine. The quality is pretty good and it works well as a hands free kit by pausing the music when you get an incoming call. If you've recorded a voice dial 'word' against a name in the phone book it will even replay that when it gets a recognised caller.

It comes with a 32Mb MM card (standard FAT16 format) and a workable but naff card reader. I've found by using VBR encoding at 64Kbps I get very reasonable quality with a playing time of about 2 hours on a 64Mb card.

Battery life is reduced. I find with using the player for about 3 hours a day (travelling to and from work) together with leaving the phone on all the time and may be and hours calls a day I get two to three days charge out of the battery. Using the 'magic word' voice dial (rather than press button voice dial) cuts that down to about 36 hours.

You've obviously never seen a T68i. It's about as small as it can be whilst allowing me to actually press the buttons. It will run almost a fornight on standby (ie on but not transmitting phone calls) and even using the clip on MP3 player I generally only have to charge it once a working week.
