  3. Re:Falun Gong are terrorists. on Falun Gong Hacks Chinese Satellite · · Score: 1

Funny, what do you think happened during our war of independence? Surely all of our soldiers in the war were terrorists. I'm sure had the events taken place a few hundred years later you would see us doing similar things as you see here.

This is a poor reference to prove your point. Everyone who has created a conflict or a battle was not labeled a terrorist and is not labeled that way today. Did our soldiers target civilians and did our leaders sponsor this? There is quite a difference between targeting buildings full of civilians during peak hours of the day and fighting other soldiers.

The problem is that no clear-cut definition of what a terrorist is exists at this point

Maybe if we get one, we can stop references like this.

  4. Heat Issue on AMD Introduces the Athlon XP 2200+ · · Score: 1

As much as I hate to say it, it looks like AMD is in trouble in the performance race with Intel. Even with the die shrink of the Thoroughbred, the 2200 is disipating 68 watts. This does not leave much room for increasing the MHz, and adding cache in the Barton core will only make it worse. I really hope they have an ace up their sleeve...

  5. Legally required to accept returns? on Shakedown: How the Business Software Alliance Operates · · Score: 1

The only way of seeing or agreeing to the terms of use in an EULA is after you have already paid for the software. Since you can not return software after breaking the shrink wrap (a precondition to seeing the EULA), what can you do if you find the terms of the agreement unacceptable?

What if everyone purchases software and then returns it to the retailer or manufacturer if they don't agree? It may accomplish terms cleary stated on the outside of the box, or software companies would make their EULA more realistic so they don't have to deal with alot of returns.

  12. Why deliver? on Webvan Out Of Gas · · Score: 1

It seems that most of the problems from this business model stem from delivery. If grocers had an online site where you could select the items you want and have them packaged and ready when you get there I would be willing to pay for this service. No more running through gigantic, crowded supermarkets not being able to find what you need.

This also allows for people who want to pick their own meats and veggies to do so. Just put everything else on the online list, run in to get the things you want to pick out, then pay everything at once. The things you want to pick out are usually (conveniently) all at the same side of the store anyway (meats, fruits, veggies, bakery).

I am not disabled and do not need someone to deliver groceries to my house. I just don't want to spend my day shopping. Or for that matter, waiting for a delivery person to show up.

  13. Good, but could be better on TiVo Response to 2.0.1 Upgrade Issues · · Score: 1

If TiVo is interested in truly correcting this, they should provide a minor upgrade so we don't have to wait until September.

Another way to provide all the functionality we had before is to give free service until the upgrade is ready. Who knows, maybe a few months of service will be enough to convert some of us non-subcribers.

  14. Re:An alternative point of view... on TiVo Upgrade Isn't · · Score: 1

I was able to restrain from replying to any of the posts until now. The fact that it was moderated to 5 is ridiculous.

Now, when I purchased the DTV I knew that it would not function without two subscriptions

When I purchased the TiVo I knew that it *would* function without the service.

The Tivo docs very clearly tell you that a Tivo without a subscription will be much less useful than one with a subscription. Tivo makes their money on the subscriptions, not the hardware

Much less useful, or will continue to become less and less useful over time as they disable features? Just because that is how they make their money does not justify it.

If I buy a cell phone, it is next to useless without a service subscription of some sort

Did they not tell you this up front?! This is very different, and is a poor analogy. When TiVo had their contest to win a free one, they stated that you only needed to buy one months service. They were counting on the fact that you would like the service so much that you would not want to do without it. When I bought my TiVo, two weeks service came with it, and I made the decision that the service was not worth it. They gave me that choice, and are punishing me for not choosing what they wanted.

As an aside, there are so many monthly fees (i.e. cable, cable modem, telephone, not to mention utilities) that you have to cut the line somewhere. I don't like the idea of new business models coming out where they want to keep their hand in your pocket. I am surprised how many people scream about .NET but don't have a problem with this.
