    You could visualize events as swarming butterflies!

    I was about to suggest Processing as well, but I found this post at the bottom of the comments and thought I'd add weight to it.
    It's unclear what data is already available, but assuming you already have raw data, something like processing would be the biggest bang for the buck in terms of converting input into beautiful imagery. (If you don't have data, most of the other threads will give you relevant tips.) Processing's even got some dead tree books devoted to it now too.

    The JVM actually has an installed user base ( even if it is only marginally greater than Silverlight's) and the support for ruby on the JVM (via jruby) is much more mature than Ironruby. Not only that, but you can use any of the languages supported by the JVM in your applets. Sun's really pushed heavy optimizations into their latest browser plugin JVM.. I wonder if applet's will finally see traction ? (err. no I don't really.. I just find it sad that they seem to finally get it right when they don't really have a chance...)

    I find it weird that there's no mention of Android or the iPhone in TFA. I realize these machines (especially the iPhone) are above the price threshold of this article, but it seems obvious that mobile computing devices and budget PCs are going to/already occupy roughly the same market space. Android especially seems like a strong competitor since the API developers had a clean slate for a whole new platform.. an ideal greenfield for cheap/low-end computing.

    I was a software developer on the CBC programme ZeD, and we torrented (and streamed and broadcast) our " New new media" episode almost 3 years ago (April 1st, 2005 to be exact). And while the torrent file still exists, sadly the torrent server is no longer running. I believe we used Xvid as the codec too (or was it divx?), but I am certain there was no DRM on the file. Anyway, ZeD was web 2.0 in 2002 !

    there would be no SVG if it weren't for VML It's a bit disingenuous to credit MS with SVG. SVG came about because Sun/Adobe pushed an alternate format (PGML) to Microsoft's VML in the bid to become a W3C vector graphic standard. Since there was no consensus on which format to adopt, SVG was born and is the hybrid offspring of the initial proposals. If MS hadn't pushed VML, the W3C vector graphic standard would be PGML....

    Seemingly to combat the hate, Dean Hachamovitch (GM for IE) has posted on the IE blog an announcement for IE8. The big news ? that IE8 will be called... Internet Explorer 8 !!! huzzah!

    yeah, but at $3k for components (without any economy of scale) this is just waiting to be turned into the next videogame peripheral... think of DDR, or Wii Fit or any sports game.. or any game really given how much mileage Nintendo's gotten out of it's nunchucks..

    Subliminal means that you are not concious of the image, but in this case it's pretty easy to spot. Not to say the ploywon't have any effect, just that use of the word 'subliminal' is incorrect.

    I don't suppose your SVG editor is available for viewing, or even better as open source ? I've been investigating a similar space and haven't found much out there. I would dearly like to check out web-enabled SVG editors before I hack my own up using Dojo.gfx module (see demo at xdraw.org).

    If web 2.0 is really about collaboration then I'd say no browser is 2.0 compliant until it is a p2p client.

    Thinking of evolution strictly in terms of genes might be a little too stuck in the status quo. Evolution itself is evolving and there will probably be another 'meta' level as we build technology around ourselves that will effectively become 'us'.
    In "The Selfish Gene" Richard Dawkins posits that genes are the atomic unit of life, and they evolved 'machines' as vehicles to help them survive competition. These 'machines' consist of any superstructure beyond the gene itself.. so they range in complexity from a simple cell, to a full blown human.
    There's no reason the cycle won't repeat itself, only this time with technology that humans build around ourselves..

    Smalltalk is a great language.. I would hardly consider learning an OO programming language to be trivial or mind numbing.

    I've seen some pretty aggressive accusations directed at Telus users.. one in particular alledged that a linux machine had been infected with some windows worm (I can't remember which variant).. fair enough.. but they were very defensive of the source of the accusation (which they wouldn't name). If the computer hadn't been off at the time of the alledged infraction I might have had doubted the integrity of the box..

    Why is it particularly heartening to see these things come from state run corporations?

    This is my personal bias, but I figure that as tax payers, if we're paying for the development anyway why not get access to the what we're paying for ?

    It would be nice if the budgets were comparable too.. :) If you're Canadian an you want more CBC love, write to your MP. Seriously.. the CBC's budget is under fire, and with the hockey strike a major CBC TV revenue is out the window.. Experimental, fringe stuff like ZeD could be in a tenuous place right now. The more support the CBC gets (in writing especially ) either to MPs or to the CBC itself (they read EVEYTHING they get) the more likely we are to see it maintain high standards.

    On that note, decisions to say open source some code is very politically sensitive to huge corporations like the CBC.. the more positive feedback they get for this, the less redtape others have to go through. At Zed.cbc.ca, we've been pushing for open source code for years.. it's a slow process, and we're ecstatic it made it's way through the bureaucracy.

    ZeD is the Canadian Broadcasting COrporation's cross platform (wbe & tv) initiative.. see our what is zed page for more details.

    Aside - one thing that isn't trumpeted but I think rocks is that our programming is commercial free. The TV show is aired at 11:25 PM because it often has content of an 'adult' nature. We don't want to compromise our artistic integrity (if something is hard to watch, but considered by us to be a valuable piece then our editors will put it on air..) for advertisers.. it also makes the show much more pleasant.

    thanks for the love.. zed is a commercial free (!!!) showcase of independent talent.. the thrust is on hilighting canadian film makers through short films, but much of our content is international.

    personally, I adore CBC radio 3's programming and wicked web presense.. there are definitely cool things happening there.

    gah. sorry.. in rushing to get the open source stuff up on a tag I dumped in a bunch of new stuff that didn't quite belong.. and since it was a "trivial change" I subverted the testing process to get it out the door.
    This kind of irresponsible releasing doesn't happen often. sorry.

    Although the implementation is caught straddling two versions right now, amoung other cool stuff under the hood, ZeD is the largest site (that I know of) to support skins.. skin support in the older version gets problematic when you add more features.. the new framework allows for easy addition of 'look' skins, but more importantly.. functionality can be drastically changed with functional 'feel' skins. It'll be a month or two before that's finished.
