You're right, this isn't new, but now you have well known established companies doing it and a fairly recent natural disaster(Katrina). While Katrina didn't cause everyone to make plans, buy emergency supplies, etc. It is still memorable enough to make people take an easier step like electronically available medical records.

While dangerous, 31 hours is amazing. Each minute he spent getting fuel was another minute, he had to do 180. OK, he didn't do 180, but you know what I mean.

With P2P, users are usually uploading aka distributing. There's not a good defense against that. If they catch someone downloading the content, you bring up issues like Fair Use, mistaken file identity, etc. I'm sure that some people would go buy a new CD then download it, hoping to get caught in order to bring a good court case concerning Fair Use into the public eye.

I think these could be very useful figures.

  6. Re:Beatles? on Led Zeppelin Agrees To Digital Distribution · · Score: 1

That's not correct. Jackson merged ATV with Sony to form Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC in 1995. Jackson then used 25% of the total (half of his half) as collateral for a secured loan with Sony in 2006. Different sources argue over whether copyright (not just publishing) was part of the ATV catalog(251 Beatles songs) I believe it is just publishing rights.

So it's probably been a EMI/Apple Corps/Beatles/Apple Computers/Sony/Michael Jackson sitdown with Sony and Michael Jackson playing a minor role.

Comment on Reuters - Olivia Harrison told Reuters in an interview in June that she hoped the Beatles' music would be put online by 2008, and Paul McCartney told trade publication Billboard earlier this year that an online deal for the group's catalogue was "virtually settled".

  12. Re:What about Macs? on Countering the Arguments Against Unbundling Windows · · Score: 1

The problem is that the article singles out Microsoft as the only one that should be unbundled.
Apple should have to sell computers without an OS too.
Also where do you start to draw the line with computers, pdas, cellphones as the lines start to blur?

Unbundling the OS makes a computer just hardware that can do very little on its own. A computer manufacturer also can't support every single OS out there.
There are definite practices of Microsoft that need to be curtailed but unbundling only Windows (even unbundling all OSes)isn't the solution.

I also believe Microsoft should be able to bundle browser, firewalls, antivirus, media players, etc with their OS as long as they don't actively try to make other software not work. After all, cars come with pre-installed stereos and the after market stereo industry still makes money, though I have seen some car manufacturers that are making it harder for them.
