Getting sued for correct predictions is stupid. Even if he had insider information, proving it will be very difficult.
I hope they have some serious proof that he had access to confidential information under a non-disclosure agreement or something along these lines.
From the article : "The suit, filed on Tuesday in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, California, aims to identify who is leaking the information and to get an injunction preventing further release of trade secrets. However, in filing the suit, Apple identifies specific articles that contain trade secrets, indicating that at least parts of those reports are on the mark."
At least they're not suing him for damage, but to obtain the source of the leak. I'm no lawyer : can a court order someone to reveal its sources?
Judging from this screenshot, I think I can see why. Sure, graphics ain't everything... but competing with WoW and EverCrack2 (to a lesser level) isn't easy... I hope they had a GREAT gameplay to compensate for such... graphics.
From their FAQ : "No decisions have yet been made on the specific pricing, but you should not expect Wish to be on the cheap side. We want to compete..."
According to Infinium Labs' pricing scheme, hardware will be given away free to any user who agrees to a two-year contract for their basic service at $29.95 per month or for $200 without a contract. Subscribers get a stock of basic games with the hardware, plus added games each month. But don't misunderstand me, you won't be getting UT2004 for free with this console; According to an Infinium rep you'll be paying full retail price for hot new games. [...] Games are stored on a local hard drive, and may be bumped off to make room in a TiVo-like fashion if you download lots of big games. We were assured though that you'd be able to re-download the games onto the Phantom at no extra cost as many times as you want. There is no way to trasfer the games to a PC for play. Conversely, there is no way to load your existing PC game library onto the Phantom.
According to the Infinium rep I spoke to, the Phantom runs Windows XP Embedded with an AMD processor and NVIDIA GPU. In other words, a pretty normal PC, so it seems odd that they would disallow playing current PC titles. I even asked if there was any modification made to the downloaded games to allow them to work on the console, and was told that no, the Phantom runs the exact same version of the game you'd go buy in a store. Weird.
It seems that the reviewer was... unimpressed at the least. After reading that, I can't figure why I would be paying 30$x24 (720$ for 2 years) for crappy games and soon-to-be-obsolete hardware. And these prices are from last year, and before the (costly and useless) lawsuit versus HardOCP. I'll buy myself a PC, thanks.
After the Infinium vs HardOCP, many "vaporware" lists throught the years, the "Phantom" Glorified PC... err... "Console" system made an appearance at this show. Will it ever make it on the store's shelves? Will people care? Stay tuned!
Even if locking articles would fix the vandalism problem, it isn't the best solution IMHO.
Why don't they implement a 'sandbox' where new additions go, getting published after a certain period of time and where previous authors can vote against the addition?
Well, I agree with you, but the problem is there for the hydrogen 'economy' too. We'll hit a wall sooner or latter, that's for sure. Especially with some heavily populated Asians countries getting industrialized.
Solar? Unlimited (well, for 5-6 billion years) but space is limiting. Wind power? Not enough space, might change wind patterns. Nuclear? I guess Uranium isn't limitless either, and people fear everything starting with 'Nu' and ending with 'clear'. Coal and fossil fuels = massive pollution, bad effects on weather, not unlimited. Miracle solution? Its sure isn't adding an additional 'hydrogen conversion' step:(
Conversion to hydrogen is an inefficient process. Why would you burn hydrogen in you car if you can have an all electric motor, exchanging batteries at 'pump' stations?
Which one is better? Sure you have the whole 'batteries don't hold enough / are too big / recharge time takes too long' problem, its far from a perfect solution. But why aren't we investing some of the money put in hydrogen developping a better 100% electric economy?
Computers we're always part of my life... even in pre-school, we had 3-4 computers we could 'play' (do some pre-school math) on...
Coleco, Tandy1000, 386... now that I think about it, I always had a computer nearby. Programming came naturally from a 'want-to-know-how-it-works' mentality.
What's stopping me of 'getting infected' with some adware / spyware / malware and claim the money? Is there some legal procedures to go throught? How are they gonna prove that I didn't install them?
If anything, it shows the power of marketing : these all appear to be good, original and fun games (except for the 3-4 rehashes of old games such as Marbles and Arkanoid), but I NEVER heard of them ANYWHERE. Which doesn't help me to buy them... which doesn't help the independant programmers of these gems... which doesn't help them to pay for marketing I guess. Vicious circle indeed.
I managed to get to the end of the list before a complete Slashdot (happened while I downloaded a top10 game... BreakQuest. Irony?). GISH, the Tarball adventure game is first, and it deserve it. Fun, VERY original gameplay and VERY challenging. Free demo available too.
In the beginning, the ISS was supposed to be a great international effort to promote science in orbit, among other things.
We all know the 'great' and 'international' part got scrapped (well, not entirely, but still)... what about the science? With a crew of 2 members and troubles with reapprovisionment, is there any (real) science getting done on the ISS? Or is it only kept up because we already invested too much in it?
Back when I upgraded my 386 16 Mhz, I told myself that I'd upgrade every 10x in performance gain. I upgraded to a Pentium 90 Mhz, then to an Athlon 900 Mhz. It seems that with the recent troubles of AMD/Intel at breaking the 4 Ghz barrier that I won't keep my 'promise' anytime soon, sadly.
How will they keep their market alive if they can't upgrade the performance? Its not like CPU chips are burning easily anyhow... so why get a replacement if the performance gain is not worth it? (Especially for web browsing / text editing only folks who upgrade based on marketing ONLY... yes! 3 Ghz more will make your internet go faster! Heh)
If you're interested in Search Engine Optimization, the tool can be used like the Overture Keyword Selector Tool. Similar results are obtained with both, which is interesting all in itself. A guy built an interface similar to Overture to use with Google Suggest.
Other than that I can't think of a real use... I usually know what I want to search for on Google. It could help optimize queries I guess (see the "number" of results before hitting submit, but not the quality...)
NASA engineers decided not to put wipers on the solar panels, because it would have been too much trouble / added too much weight. I guess they're pretty happy with their decision now, with the 'unexpected' cleaning events...
That their (inevitable) demise receive AT LEAST AS MUCH publicity on public news channels / papers that their foolish lawsuits received. To inform the population that it was FUD. Or else they'll have (kinda) suceeded in inspiring a doubt in the minds of many concerning Linux legitimacy. No one on slashdot, obviously, but the common man who heard on news that SCO was suing IBM on UNIX/Linux for code thievery... maybe.
We can talk about it further in my blog`s forum or by mail, if you want too;) Worst piece of software EVER. Even the installer had troubles... and it managed to crash my whole MACHINE (not just Windows) repeatetly (a "bug" later admitted when I talked to one of their engineer by phone). Features announced on the frontpage of their website completely absent from the product. 3000$. Yeah. Right.
Maybe a crime hasn't been committed against this (obscure) law, but stealing critical info from the company you're working for and selling it to the highest bidder (or in this case, spammer) sure is. Was he accused of the wrong thing or what?
So a cheap, but overpriced and underperforming laptop deserve the frontpage because it run Linux? Or maybe its cause its sold at Walmart? I don't get the point... Where are the news for nerds, you know, stuff that matters?
Jeez... if it's not profitable at the insane price plasma TV sells, I guess it won't be profitable anytime soon...
Early adopters might get burned on this one... we don't even know how long they last yet. How can a plasma screen fail? LCDs get annoying stuck pixels, CRT just pass out... what about plasma? Do we have an estimated life expectancy on those?
Almost every forum / message board out there utilize these scripts... I think a lot of backup-reloading (for those who have them) will take place if a script kiddie toolbox exploiting these vulnerabilites hit the scene...
Forum defacing excepted, is there anything else someone could do using these vulnerabilities?
Couldn't they implement laser-reflecting shield on the plane's window or at least on pilots googles? It would go a long way protecting pilots eyes...

Cute, but with no sliding panel, I'm sure doing any maintenance (switching HDs, cleaning, etc) must be close to hell.
Case-modders. Funny people.

Anonymous coward, Score 0, but he has a point.
Conversion to hydrogen is an inefficient process. Why would you burn hydrogen in you car if you can have an all electric motor, exchanging batteries at 'pump' stations?
Solar*(inefficient conversion rate)->Electricity*(inefficient conversion rate)->Hydrogen*(inefficient conversion rate)->Power
Solar*(inefficient conversion rate)->Electricity*(inefficient conversion rate)->Power
Which one is better?

I guess its why Slashdot don't offer to mirror sites they're going to link to on the mainpage.

Slow news day, I guess...
