The comments render all wacky for me about half the time. Using latest 1.0 version, and on my fresh-today-built G4 optimized version.
you can do the ctrl+/- (cmd-/+) trick, but considering that slashdot has one of the highest percentage of Firefox users on the web it would be nice if they made it look right in Firefox.
I'm guessing the slashcode is so hacked that doing something like this would be a major undertaking.
I remember one summer when I was a kid my parents sent me to "computer camp" I don't remember much about it except I didn't really like it. But that's not the point...The thing I do remember is when they gave us a tour of the IT department (except I don't think they used that term back then - c.1985). Anyway, the guy who was giving the tour proudly displayed their Hard Drive that held an amazing 420 MEGAbytes. It was this huge washing machine-sized thing with 12 inch platters. I thought it was pretty cool, too. I remember telling my dad how cool it would be to have one of those. Now that I think about it, it would be pretty cool to have had some giant hard disk hooked up to my C64!
Now I walk around with 20Gigabytes in my pocket (and kinda wish I had 40) we've come a long way.
Same here. I built my main desktop computer in 2000: Athlon 700/256MB Along the way I've added more HD but that's it. Except for games (which I don't play anyway) I can't see any noticeable speed difference in using my machine vs a new fast computer.
I did get a new computer this year (ibook g4) because I was leaving to study out of the country and couldn't really bring my big un.
I hacked a custom solution to serve up my mp3 collection on my big-speakered stereo. Here's how you can do it, too.
1. Go to Radio Shack and buy 100 ft of speaker wire. 2. Cut it to the appropriate length so that it will reach from the computer to the stereo. 3. Solder on RCA plugs 4. Connect to line out of sound card 5. Connect to AUX IN of stereo and VOILA! stream any audio to your kickass home stereo system.
I thought of doing the same with the TV-out of my video card, but since my monitor is bigger than my TV it didn't really seem worth it.
Agreed! Sam and Max is the only game I ever played all the way through. I loved it! It had good puzzles plus it was clever and funny.
I figure we will soon reach a point where people aren't impressed by cool graphics anymore so game makers won't be able to rely on their games selling just because it looks great.
there's not really any good excuse for a weak wpa key. My router will generate a random 128bit key. Kind of funny. I have our wireless router locked down with a 128bit key and only accepting connections from mine and my roommates' MAC addresses. But one of my neighbors has a wide open access point that I can connect to whenever I wan't. I don't really want to, but I could.
No real point to this post except that you should attempt even minimal security (Unlike my neighbor).
I wonder. It said the coating was silica based. Of course the steel wool pad wouldn't scratch it since steel is much softer. But I wonder if sand might since the disc is essentially coated with sand (and other stuff too)?
Umm. Not all voting US citizens are within it's borders. I happen to be studying abroad, and as a registered US voter I might want to read the candidates' sites. This is a pretty dumb move (not that I was clamouring to get to W's website, but it's the principle).
Let's see...make the 20GB ipod red and black, then sell it for $150 more. Brilliant!
Somebody would have to either be a HUGE U2 fan or a complete sucker to buy this thing.
Also it just occured to me that if you put Bono and Jobs together their combined ego power might destroy the planet, or small nations. They'd better be careful!
Doesn't have anything to do with being logical. If all you've ever been told is more MHz == better computer then that's what you go by. The majority of the average person's computer hardware education comes from marketing sources, whether it's the latest intel ad or the guy at CompUSA. I don't know how many times I have told people that they should buy a slower processor and save a couple hundred bucks, because they will never know the difference.
What about drive space or RAM? They don't know the difference. It's the CPU.
Same thing. I've never seen explained in any advertising literature what the difference between the two is. With all the numbers and gigas and megas no wonder nobody knows what it means. I can't think of how many people have told me something like: "I'm thinking about this new 60 gigabyte computer" They don't know what that means. They just picked the biggest number.
What the computer buying public needs is education. I always do my best to explain to these people what the different specs about a computer mean. (without being condescending!) Why should they automatically be expected to know about this stuff? When I'm a doctor I'm not going to expect my patients to know that Aspirin works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2, and preventing prostaglandin synthesis. Yet they still can buy and use aspirin.
OK. I don't really know where I was going with that. Umm. Anyway you get the idea. Carry on.
Ah yes. The Alabama drop out. The worst of the lot.
Anyway, this is all the part of medicine I am NOT looking forward to. Unfortunately there is no way to escape the business world. I wonder how long it will be for me to go from idealistic medical student to cynical doctor? Hopefully the overly political and money hungry healthcare system won't drain my soul too much. I'm just in my first year. I love everything I'm learning and can't wait to get in the clinical arena. Luckily I have doctors in my family that I get encouragement from. Such as...yeah dealing with the insurance companies, Medicare, administration, etc. sucks big time. But it's all worth it when you see that you have actually made a positive difference in the lives of your patients./alabama non drop out
So this guy took Mambo and added what sounds like a trivial piece of code (allow a story to show up on all pages).
I can see him maybe getting pissed for not being credited or them using his non-released code without permission. But all he did was slightly modify a GPL project. Which makes his derivative modifications GPL as per the license. So even if he was planning on selling his "improved" mambo. They would be allowed to use the code anyway since he would have to release it, and makes his whole case moot.
Pretty lame that he thinks he can take a huge open source project developed by many people and then add a few lines of code and think it's something new and innovative. You want to write your own proprietary system. Go ahead. Write your own! If you don't want to contribute to OSS then don't write code based on it.
Not talented or motivated enough to make an original product? Change somebody else's and claim it as your own!

Animal Robots

· Score: 1
I love science fiction, stuff about the future, and robots are awesome. But this movie SUCKED. Most of it was tolerable, but the last half hour nearly brought tears to my eyes. And not because I felt sorry for the little boy robot, but because it was incredibly cheesy and really really dumb.
Spielberg obviously put a lot of energy in making it look terrific, because it did. But all the great cinematography and cool special effects in the world could not save this flaming turd from stinking the place up.
Surprised I didn't see any other slashdotters mention this one.
Wow! He's very lucky they caught it early. Most people don't survive pancreatic cancer as it will usually metastisize much easier than other cancer types. Interesting coincidence that I just had a lecture (med school) this morning about a pancreatic cancer case and then get on slashdot to read that Jobs has it. I wish him well. It's one of the worst cancers to get.
I also worry about the chicken pox vaccine.. you get a neutered virus... how do they know it wont cause shingles in later life like the real virus?
I know a pediatrician (really smart guy, too) who is totally against chicken pox vaccine. Last year he was actually looking for somebody with chicken pox to expose his kids to! The problem with the vaccine is that your immunity will not be as strong as that which you would get from a juvenile infection. So you get older your chicken pox immunity wanes and next thing you know you're in the hospital. The problem is that it is now mandatory for all school children. Despite tons of evidence that it could be detrimental in the long run. Public health policy made by bureaucrats and not scientists.
I've had several todo/organizer programs, a Palm, but they all failed to help me at all. I always come back to the basics...Papers in my wallet -- preferably Post-Its Why? 1. Accessibility: wallet is always with me. 2. Portability: very lightweight 3. Reliability: always on/no batteries! 4. Versatility: the post-its can be stuck on monitor or taken with me!
Sometimes I use electronic quick notes for stuff that I want to keep, but it's not urgent. For that it's plain text files. I've also been known to "touch quicknote" or "touch phone#"
Also I recently discovered Stickies on Macs. That's a pretty cool program. Nice for your laptop, but for a desktop machine it's post-its on the monitor all the way!
Just get a card with a bogus name. That's what I do.
I don't care if Bud tracks purchases. They know that this many cases were sold at so-and-so store, but not that Misanthropy bought beer. Don't put your real info on the discount cards and pay cash. They'll never figure out what kind of beer I drink!! HAHAHA!
...and maybe I could get up on time.
My quartz clock made me a 1/4 second late to class the other day!
Sure everybody says, "why don't you just get up a quarter second earlier?"
Well, easier said than done!
