Actually, I think that's more a result of Yahoo migrating to the new system. I've seen the new interface from my friend's account like 6 hours ago and it looks pretty slick. He had thought Yahoo! was bugged but we kept refreshing and we were able to watch them migrate to the new interface in real time.

I logged into my account and it was still using the old interface and had the old 4-megabyte limit. It wasn't until I logged in like 10 minutes ago that I logged in to see the new interface, although a bit broken ... they are still probably porting over some of the accounts ... I wonder why they couldn't make "global" changes that would affect all users at once, as it probably should be?

  12. Makes sense... POVERTY is the bottomline on (CD) Pirates Take to the Ocean · · Score: 1

    It all makes sense.

Taking piracy to the ocean can only strengthen the Malaysian pirate ring, the largest movie piracy ring IN THE WORLD as it will give them easier escape routes as well as quicker access to other countries where they export their pirated VCDs to.

Wanna know why rampant piracy still exists in Malaysia despite the frequent mass raids that happen in that country? Because although the Malaysian government wants (whether sincerely or just for show) to combat piracy, the people that are under them do not. Why? Because the bribes those pirates give are their source of income.

    The bottomline here is POVERTY.

While people are forced to find ways to feed themselves because of poverty, may it be legal or illegal, piracy, like many other crimes, cannot be stopped.

  13. How about Evolution + Creation? on Ready, Steady, Evolve · · Score: 1

My personal opinion on the origin of the species is that evolution worked HAND IN HAND with creation. The reason for my belief is that there really are evidences of evolution in nature (age of dinosaurs, adaptation, survival of the fittest etc) yet aside from these there exist irrefutable proof of God's existence (the beginning of everything, missing links, miracles, etc)

Despite all these, a lot of questions still remain and we probably will never know the answer. However, we can always ask, like we always have....

  14. Why piracy will not die on Why Software Piracy is Good for Microsoft · · Score: 2, Insightful

The keyword in piracy is the word: ECONOMY.

A country with a very poor economy will always suffer from piracy and counterfiets. The reason for this is that majority of the population simply cannot afford things such as original software that a member of a rich country can easily afford.

Take, for example, my country - the Philippines. An average worker here earns around $160 a month, as opposed to 1st-world countries where $2000 a month is more or less normal. Here, lunches cost around $1-$2, with $2 being already considered "expensive". Assuming an individual purcheses food at $1 and eats 3x a day, for 30 days, that would be a total of 30 * 1 * 3 = $90, which leaves you with $70 to spend on rent, electricity, water, phone, etc. That isn't much, and it's only ENOUGH to keep you sustained. If you have a family, things become worse.

Now this doesn't leave us much for luxury goods such as $40 PC games, let alone a $200 operating system. Hence, the solution - piracy.

Will Microsoft bother going after these small third-world home users? I don't think so. Since we don't have the capacity to buy, we aren't very high in their target market list, or they would be relentlessly knocking down pirated CD stalls everyday.

This assumption is a bit scary. What about AFTER such catastrophies?

Following this line of thinking, then everything should just go back the way it were. After 2 world wars and 9/11 where are we now? There's still RIAA, there's still Microsoft and their DRM.

Some things just never change, it's sad that you need a catastrophe just to realize that.

  19. Identifying legitimate files over P2P networks on Can Poisoning Peer to Peer Networks Work? · · Score: 1

I think that the problem lies in identifying whether a file on a P2P network is legit or not.

The obvious solution would be to make a list of these legitimate files. However, obviously these sites would then become the companies' main targets.

I think that we can borrow an idea from a file-sharing network called eDonkey where there exist websites that provide a list of fake/bad files. If the P2P developers could provide a way to tag/mark/block these fake files, I doubt that the companies can go after them for doing so. Imagine them saying:

"We wish to sue you for trying to prevent other users from downloading this file."

Of course, there are some issues that may arise from this, such as:
    - the difficulty of maintaining such a listing
    - someone always has to download and check the bad file (which is not much of a problem in the broadband age)
    - the companies can perpetually create fakes with similar name patterns, thus vexing the users even more (again, the issue here is: when does it stop?)

What do you think? Can anyone come up with a better way to identify legitimate files (or rather , identifying fake files)?
