Another great tool that deserves a look (besides those already mentioned) is PMD. I use PMD at work to find all sorts of cruft that can be cleaned out of older Java sources. It can be run inside your favourite IDE (to highlight the offending lines) or as an ANT task (generating a report in XML or HTML). Generally I've found it to be a great help, and the coders have been very responsive to my (many) feature suggestions and bug tickets. Most of the things it's found have been general cleanups (ie unused variables or imports), but it also helped find a number of bugs in our code too.

RAID-5 only requires 3 disks, although you can use more if you want better data protection.

I get the feeling that you understand how RAID-5 works, but your statement is misleading.

With RAID-5 it stores parity data across the array for each piece of information stored. So to store data that would fill N drives, you need N+1 drives for the array (1 drive extra for the parity info).

Adding drives won't protect your data any more (although hot standbys are nice to have). RAID-5 fails if I lose two drives at once. On a 3-drive array, that would mean I'd have to lose 66% of my drives at once to lose my data. On a 10-drive array I'd have to lose only 20% of my drives to lose my data. Having the hot standby drive would be great, because the chances of two drives failing simultaneously are usually low, so hopefully the hot standby would be synched before another drive goes.

A better solution would be to use striping and mirroring together, for maximum redundancy. Costs more, but a lot safer.

It seems simple enough. What we are experiencing here is a reversal of an issue Canadians have had to deal with in the height of the dot-com hype...

Many, many talented IT workers, doctors and other skilled labourers were moving down south, because the jobs were there and the same jobs were paying more. Now, the tables have turned. The employers seem to have the upper hand, and the jobs are returning here. True, I don't earn as much as someone with an equivalent job in the U.S. (ie: I earn the same amount in Canadian dollars as someone in the U.S. would earn in U.S. dollars).

I hate to say "that's life", but that's what it is. I didn't move south, even though I had considered it. I stayed put in Toronto, earning less, but I am now rewarded with somewhat improved (arguably) job security. I've had the same job for the last three years, since I left school. Bad or good, the world economy is certainly changing things around a lot.

Hardly innovative. The Gravis Ultrasound was doing all of that long before the AWE32 hit the market.

Man I LOVED that card! I own 3 of them (the original, upgraded to 1 meg). For a long while, I tried to keep using that card. I had a machine where I had the GUS and a SB in simultaneously, configured so that all MIDI output went to the GUS and all effects went through the Sound Blaster. The output from one went into the Line In to the other, so that the audio came out mixed.

No card I've found to date is able to match the quality of the MIDI output on that old GUS. Their patchset was truly awesome. I enjoy being able to use programs that can still use those old patchsets, albeit in software now. Using MIDI composition tools was a dream, and unfortunately neither my Sound Blaster nor my MIDI keyboard are able to reproduce the quality sound that I had 10 years ago with the GUS.

I recently tried to play some of my old games (Doom, Descent, etc) on my newer hardware. Man do they ever sound *awful*! I feel like we've really taken a huge step backwards when Gravis went out of the sound card business.

Only reasons I'm not still using the card? Only two:

-lack of support. The DirectSound drivers never worked right, and drivers were only semi-working on Windows 95 or 98 (never on NT). Again, I'm talking about the classic, not the PnP card. However, there is excellent Linux support for the card, thank goodness.

-it's ISA. My computer does not have any ISA slots. This, I suppose, is a much bigger problem than the above.
