My college freshman year (1989), I got $15/week from my parents. I'd buy two cases of Shafer for $5 (total), a few packs of cigs at.75 each (often buy 1 get 1 free), eat at Taco Bell 3 times ($2 for 3 tacos and a coke)
Ah, the breakfast of champions.
Of course this was just prior to the computer revolution (an i386 w/ 1mb ram was maybe $5000), so I typed papers for $3/page, and bought (uh-hum) "extra supplies" with that money:-)
Mac OS is steadily improving and improvment costs money.
Let's not forget the bandwidth cost of offering "one click" updates (no hunting around for a patch). I use RHN with Redhat 9 and pay, I think, about $60USD per year. With that said, IMO, this makes spending $129 a little easier.
I really think most of the people that complain about the cost of Mac OS updates are those (like me) that remember a time when they were basicly free. Starting with (I think) Mac OS 7.1 Pro Apple started charging and people freaked. Well, the days of Apple's ultra high profit margin on hardware is mostly gone and users need to pay for new features on the software end instead.
Macs cost a bit of money for feeding and care like updates, hardware and service parts but you do IMO get a lot more functionality (or "bang for the buck") than other OSs especially if you do AV stuff.
Long story short: Get the update and enjoy the new toys.
BTW, I use an eMac for video work and Linux for everything else...
The "Free Trade Area of the Americas" would really restrict trade and freedoms in certain areas, the "Clear Skies Initiative" would allow older power plants avoid costly upgrades and continue polluting, and the "Patriot Act" was truly one of the most unpatriotic things the US Govt has ever done to it's people.
Coming next: The Bush White House announces "Take a Muslim to lunch week"...
However, most "normal people" relate well to... general examples, and this book is full of them.
If it's like Applied Cryptography there are tons. For a few weeks after reading AC all I dreamt of Bob, Alice, Trent, Peggy and that kid Alice kidnapped.
A server case mounted on a scaled down electric go-cart (which can do burnouts and tops out at 20mph). It's chromed out inside and has an analog tachometer that shows cpu load.
pot possession is completely legal is only a temporary situation due to a dispute between the government and the courts. But then again, we were planning to decriminalize it.
They'll get a law in place when both houses can agree on what the law should be and have it in compliance with the Court's guidelines. That'll happen any time now. =) Lets not forget that the Supremes have a case in front of them that just might completely end prohibition.
BTW, decriminalization is not the solution. While saving people from getting a criminal record for possession under 30g, the bill being tossed about would increase jail time for growing (a big issue in BC) and dealing. This will result in more theft of hydro and more violence. Legalization removes the criminals from the equation. "The greater the risk, the greater the reward" and decriminalization will increase the risk to those on the distribution end and those caught in the crossfire. Legalization ends the crime caused by sales, earns tax revenues, and allows LEOs to go after the real criminals (instead of Tommy Chong*).
Simply put, the US can learn alot from Canada. They're trying to solve many of the problems the US just ignores.

While I see where you are coming from, I highly doubt that the legalization of marijuana is a necessary topic...
I disagree. Simply put, California needs to do two things: cut spending and raise revenue all without pissing everyone off. There are very few things that can accomplish this without causing major trouble (like closing schools or not feeding those in need). Two ways are to legalize marijuana and/or prostitution.
Legalizing marijuana makes sense. Imagine how many LEOs (law enforcement officers) we could reduce from local and state payrolls (about 10%) and the hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue generated each year. This is worth at least $500M per year. It would also open up valuable prison space so violant offenders get to stay in long. Yes, I know the Feds would freak but here's my idea.
Gov. Georgy line item vetos any funds going to marijuana enforcement and detection (i.e.: CAMP). Killing off DARE would be the icing on the cake but I digress.
Since law enforcement has now been neutered she gets a State Representative to sponsor a bill to legalize it and require tax stamps on all marijuana (and make the stamps available for purchase anonymously). Taxing "excess" like tobacco, alcohol, etc. is great sport for politicos because it gets them more money while looking good to the constituents. Part of the bill would require all California LEOs not to assist in any way the federales concerning federal marijuana laws.
The feds have two choices: send in the troops (unlikely) or ignore the "problem" and contain it to California (likely). Remember that there is nothing in the constitution banning marijuana like alcohol. The feds do not have a great "moral" leg to stand on.
Profit!!!
This is an oversimplification but my point is we can no long afford to enforce the illogical prohibition of marijuana. It seems that the only people that support a continuation of the current laws are LEO unions, drug testing companies and private "dry out camps".
The tax revenue from the sale of marijuana could go a long way in saving California.
As a side note, director Ron Mann and Woody Harrelson put together a great documentary called "Grass". Go rent it today or watch it for free over at pot-tv.net. It speaks the truth.
There is no death penalty in Vermont. A leading death penalty opponent and founder of the Fair Trial Initiative is even one of Dean's three main webmasters.
"Capital punishment is an emotional issue, but supporters and opponents can agree that the death penalty should only be imposed after a fair trial.
...
As President, I would promptly instruct my Attorney General to evaluate the federal death penalty system, take steps to ensure that it is applied fairly and reliably."
Dean supports the death penalty and says so right on his own website. As for your point that since there is no death penalty in Vermont Dean does not support the death penalty. This, of course, is a specious arguement. Vermont has no death penalty because to the people of Vermont. It seems that if Dean had his choice he'd reinstate it over the objections of his constituents.
The death penalty is wrong on all levels. Killing someone in the name of justice is nothing more than murder and revenge. It's a punish with no appeal and with no chance to change if incorrectly given. Since the Supremes reinstated the death penalty over 100 people destine for death have been proven innocent by parties outside the goverment. Two people have been exonerated after their executions. There is no justice for them.
Dean's positions are seldom troglodyte thumbs up thumbs down on any issue but rather considered and nuanced positions based on evaluation of facts."
Dean is a hard core politico. He supports the current "war on drugs", the death penalty and NAFTA. He has consistently and prolifically spoken out against medical marijuana laws (this includes the de facto support for imprisoning of the sick and dying for it's use and not allowing individual states to regulate medical marijuana). Vermont newspapers had to sue him when he was Governor for his 2002 schedule, which he refused to release. It seems he spend most of the year out of state. Not to mention that prison sentences more than doubled under his tenure yet crime still increased. I should mention that his has given us very little information on his stance on many issues unlike someone like Kucinich.
Sorry guys, if you were expecting him to be different from the majority of other politicians then you will be truly disappointed. He might be better than Bush or Lieberman, but not much. If UCE will get him into the Oval Office then UCE it is.
From the Portsmouth [New Hampshire] Herald, August 10, 2003:
"A medical marijuana campaign report card"
Howard Dean - Rating: F+
In short: Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who is a physician, is the only candidate who has actually killed a medical marijuana bill. Because of Dean's actions, Vermonters with AIDS, cancer and other terrible illnesses still face arrest and jail under state law for using medical marijuana. Dean recently retreated from his earlier pledge to direct the FDA to study medical marijuana. His reversal and his actions have shown that medical marijuana patients can never trust him. The only reason we give Dean an F+ and not a straight F is because the latter grade should be reserved for Bush, who is as cruel and heartless as anyone could possibly be on the medical marijuana issue.
John Dvorak... works out that there are 25 millions blue screen crashes of XP per day.
25m per day? MS needs to start putting banner ads on them. During those nice long core dumps that could say something like "Special for today: upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for only $999! Press your reset button to continue."
Georgy, evidence actually shows that if children use marijuana once a month from the age of 13, they will NEVER achieve their potential. How can you justify your stance on weed given this FACT ?
You clearly do not understand what you are talking about. First off, the study you cite [in a later posting] stated that there was only a correlation and not a causation. Your comment has zero facts backing it up. It's like saying since over 80% of all schizophrenics abuse alcohol as teenages then alcohol must cause schizophrenia.
The current war on marijuana costs the US over 9 billion USD per year plus another 1+ billion in lost tax revenue if it was legal and taxed. Legalizing marijuana would open up over 130,000 prison spaces allowing more room for real criminals. The facts are that marijuana is much less harmful than alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and acetaminophen (Tylenol).
A great example of the failure on the war on marijuana is 19 year old Webster Alexander. A undercover cop asked him for some pot, Alexander gave him some. The cop asked again and this time offerred him money in exchange. After four "deals" Alexander was arrest, never given a competent lawyer, tried, convicted and sentenced to 26 years in jail for a total of $250 worth of sales. This is more time than a 2nd degree murder, 1st degree manslaughter or a molestation conviction gets you.
Please stop spreading FUD about marijuana because someone just might believe you.
