For over three years now the differing factions at Novell have been fighting over which route to take in relation to the what will be the backbone of it's products. The Netware factions has been directly responsible for Novell NOT developing it's own Linux, despite them having their own kernel and distro in house.
While this move is good for Novell, and good for the community, it has taken way to long in coming. This is partly due to the fact that if Novell HAD gone with Linux three years ago, they would have been the major supplier of the OS right off the bat for IBM, with IBM offering Linux based servers and caching boxes. When Novell dropped the ball, IBM pulled out.
Another point to make here is what this will do in relationship to SCO. You may well remember the piece a few weeks ago that talked about a statement that Novell made, quietly at the time, that the license that SCO had to sell licenses to UNIX came from them. I would expect a major blowup from SCO in the next few weeks, though do not be suppressed if Canopy decides to kill SCO outright and take the tech into Netware Linux. Canopy waffles more then Clinton at a beach party.
One other point...I have NEVER seen a machine serve as fast as a Linux box controlling files that are on Netware partitions. Say what you want about Netware being owned, but with the 2.4 kernel and multi-threading issues resolved (another reason why Novell was very hesitant to go with a 2.2 kernel based system) I would expect to see something really good from them in near future.
http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20031028/in dex.html Not as a solution in and of itself, but it is a good idea considering that you more then likely have a box to burn...also try to grab some old PolyServe software. It will do that samething over a network, though not without resource loss. WAR TUX!
This is pretty sweet, but there are few other things I would like to see simulated in that tunnel such as... -70's muscle car with JATO pack installed on roof.. -obligatory X-Wing test -obligatory test -I-mac -GW Bush's head -Star Destoyer -a small animal This list needs help, I know...so do add...
I was part of Novell when this went down. The really sad part was the infighting that occured between those wanted to keep Netware and those that wanted to move on to Linux. Novell had gone all the way to the point of haveing an Advanced Dev Group that did Linux hacks. Then, about three years ago, all the Linux groups were spun into thier own companies and half the folk got RIFed in the first three months. I am telling you though, if Novell had gone through with it, it would have rocked. They had some pretty AWESOME video streaming stuff that run faster then anything I have ever seen. Too bad it died, but I hope that they can bring it back.
I used to live in Utah. I was trained on Linux by a Caldera expert. they were bright, smart happy folk there. Then the merger and then the name change. Now it is an evil pit. No CS major worth his salt goes near it. Everyone knows that SCO will just suck you dry for 80 hours a week then kick you to the curb. So sue be for running RH9 on my laptop. Sue me for all of the linux installations that I have done due to YOUR training! the worst part about this is that SCO cannot see this ass kicking coming from 2 inches away. At the end of the day they will burping farts. Long live Tux.
Wages are at thier lowest rate in five years. Unemployment is at it's highest since god knows when. It now takes 5 to 8 months to find a job in the current market.
Oh, by the way, one word for you...India (and if I haveto talk to one more motherfucker that I amslamminghome a 100 bucks an hour for and cannot understand I MIGHT WALK...to India...and hang a cows head overtop the call center door).
Deflation, plus lower wages, plus outsourceing = shit for you if you do. If you do do it, please respond to slashdot as I am sure alot of us would like to hear about something like this and if it works.
But my gut says no, and paranoid side says that they juts be TRYING to getyou quite, sell the IP to the highest bidder and float on down in thier golden parachutes.
As the Amiga has been dead MUCH longer then BeOS, I would counter that the Amiga guys are much more fanatical. How else do you explain dropping 2G's on 10 year old hardware?:)
STG is supposed to have a merchant class, the first of it's ind for MMOG. This sounds to those that want to solve issues without a gun or overwhleming force like in EQ), however if the time spent to level up this kind of player is appritiatively longer then a violence based character, then only folk who will have merchants will be the guilds (who will then run up prices).
So the question of if there will be non-violent solutions to problems in a game rests on the soulders of the game develpoer. Make the solutions innovative and good enough (look at Myst)and you WILL have sales.

What is so unfortunate about killing off a bunch of piopolists in one stroke? What, did they get Sen. Starr to finally RTFL for him to realise that it was not just an "update to copyright law for digital management?"
Well, ATI did cheat with it's second set of drivers for the ATI 8500 (the card that is still undervalued for what it could IMHO). The drivers where designed to optimize Quake 3.

A conspiracy theorist might imagine this scenario:
Microsoft: "Hey, you're on a cash burn deathmarch - how would you like to make a bundle of money and keep your jobs for a couple more years?" SCO: "OK, what do we have to do?"
And, pray tell, is so hard about reading that. There is enough spin on this to make an owl dizzy. One thi is for sure...
I KNOW the old Caldera, and they HATED MS with a firey passion. so does Novell for that matter. But both were bought off, and people who coded the code that was stolen where then laid off (and these layoffs occured within 6 months of a settlement). so am I leary of Caldera all of sudden turning around and sticking there nose into OSS as MSBitch. For sure. Anyone who dealt with MS in the bad old days before they started playing nice and just buying companies for outlandish amounts will vouch for that. Now they have more money then God, they just go out and buy what they want and source it in. Trust me, somewhere down the line they will make an overt move to buy some piece of OSS and source it into WindersXX and then sue anyone else who uses that source. EFF or not, that could get real ugly real fast.
This should be called out for what it is...the first shot in Microsoft's war against OSS. Everything up to this point has been trivial. Now we have a company that is going to openly challenge the GPL, and one that is a MSBitch to boot.
I bet if you look at the money, all trails will lead to The Beast. OSS has been expecting this to come from any other place (look at openGL for reference of another possible MS suit) then from one of "there own." Makes me ashmed to say I even assosiated with Calders before they became a bunch of a-holes.
Microsoft today confirmed that it's follow up version to windows XP, codename Longhorn, will be released in 2005.
Information Minister Mohommed Saeed al-Sahaf said "Today is a great day for the nation of Microsoft. Our enemies call us the Beast of Redmond. Laugh now supplicants! Soon the Beast will impale you His Longhorn! The Sons of Bill rejoice, knowing the Penguin is too far from reality, with thier stomachs roasting and their processes committing suicide at the Gates of Redmond. Never will our dates slip, in fact, it will be ready by 2004. Even now it is ready, but we hold it back at our will!"
Richard Stallman responded for the OSS community by replying "WTF? Where did they get this guy? Oh, patent on overlordish rhetoric? Sheeeeesh."

Just remember this though...OS x is UNIX, UNIX is owned by SCO and SCO is owned by...MS?
