    I used to read HardOCP because it had some neat stuff, but the guy who runs the opperation has the maturity level of my snot-nosed 8 year old cousin, and is seriously outpaced by my cat in mental dexterity. He must be the social equivalent of feral dog: licking his ass in public, barking at everything that moves, and humps everybodys leg.

    A couple of notes
    1) Currently there is a project to support the WinTV PVR 250/350 under linux, and issac has purchased one of these. The cool thing is that this card does hardware encoding, so you should be able to use a 600-700 MHz machine for live pauseing.

    2) Seperated backend/front end is sorta working. meaching you could have a IDE raid machine with a couple of cards, and have some very basic playback units.

    3) It use X, this could be good or bad depending on your POV. Basically it has allowed a lot of modules to be created.

    4) the video format is nupple for the regular stuff so archivale is a bit tricky if you want to replay else where.

    5) satelite/cable tunner boxes is sorta an on your own project, but a lot of people have done it so community support is out there.

    Keep in mind that sony has to disntint levels of Wega sets. the cheap ones(the one you got) and the really expensive ones. There is a significant difference in the quality between these two types. I can afford the cheap one, but my eyes just might mutiny from the horrible picture, and I cant afford the really nice units. REally tho for the price of the high end units a project is a better value.

    Because DVD+RW is better, or maybe is DVD-RW, I dnot know ;-> It basically comes down to the fact that the there are to many fucking DVD standards.

    You're talking about an industry that has prospered over the past 20 years largely by creating the perception that there is a continual need to upgrade you mean like the Automotive industry, and the clothing industry and the entertaiment industry and the heavy machinery industry. There is always this problem. Usually you can do your tasks with the old equipment, but at some time the cost of buying new equipment. I personllay needed to upgrade. my P166 just doesnt do matlab or matcad.....

    Actually transmission and transformation losses in the system are increadbly small (like 1-2%) its the converting physical movment to energy, its like 30% efficent

    Uh...Sort of.. You see on the West coast we dont build alot of generation. Infact between the 70's and 2001 nothing was built

    Nuclear.....Dot get me started, there hasnt been a nuke plant built in the US since 3 mile Island, Thanks Greenies

    Gas Turbin....fairly new compared to other tech....but growing. I hope to see more, however not a really good natrual gass system in the states at the moment.

    Coal......Probably the worst of the worst. Here I agree with the hippies ;->

    Wind.....Enron started these (belive it or not. Making oprogress here, however theire are several issues,(reliabliity, cost, etc). However farmers could put this up on their land aslee(happening in Oregon)

    I think we should promote distributed, small generation like this, and wind even, small damns. I know it costs a little more, but last thing we need to do is burn oil and coal.

    Power spike is a seperate issue, If you dont have a decent UPS(not aUPS that switches to to the inverter during transients and outages, but where you are always drawing on a AC->DC->AC) and a decenet Backup system, then you shouldnt say "mission critial"

    You dont want to leave it on auto, because when the swap file gets sparsley poppulated, it gets resized. This causes theavy use of the HD apparently. Not something you want to happen when on a laptpo trying to conserve power. If you've got space to spare, try setting your minimum and maximum to the same.

    When I saw the mention of cassette I knew exactly where you were going with their use ;-> I used to make a 2100 mile car trip through the ass end of Candada and Alaska twice a year, and boy does having an entertaining story help. Even for 8 hour rides. Tho, thankfully Libraries are starting to carry CD's now. Speaking of, I have on to cop at home. hmmmmm.....

    However, This will be intergrated with other MS products, and I would bet they will disable this feature as much as possible. requiring perhaps a 3rd party piece of software, which you might not be able to run on, say a work computer. Give MS some credit, They can figure this out, and they have the ability to 'fix' this isue

    I've seen all sorts of people that have "wire Tapping devices" usually they variety refferred to as "beige boxes" all so known as butt-sets, a critical tool if you do any work on telecom stuff at all, or utility, or residential, or comercial info tech/sec etc. Besides in several states, you can tap your own phone line as long as 1 of the two pareties know its there, hell Lawyers will tell the other party then procede to record the information using something similar to a wire tapp (just not concealed, plugged into the line in plain site). No devices like that sohould not be illeragal for several reasons.

    Lego is easy to use(relative, its a kinda nerdy thing to start with, and very few people that "build stuff" with legos and are above the age of 14 are not already in this high tech catagory.)and Lego is powerful at building ....toys.... Now build me a production car out of legos that is easy to construct and powerfull, then we can talk. Things that are power full steel, titainum, ceramics, etc are powerfull(strong) but no easy to use. ie they require a great deal of processing. Legos are easy, I could through to gether a full sized car in about 1 month and a million legos, but I wouldnt want to drive it.

    I love legos...but your example sucks ass. serious ass in fact

    Correction,(i belive) AC was so succesfull at killing people in a some what painfull and horrifying fashion that New York decided to use an AC electric Chair, so they built AC generators for that purpuse, and it kinda took off from there.
