Maybe you are no longer the target market for cell phone companies. At any rate, these things in the article are called prototypes, and they are absolutely necessary when you want compete in the market for gadgets that do more and more things every day. Nobody knows what kids will want tomorrow. But if you keep a fresh buffet of shiny new things for them to pick from, you are sure to keep their attention.

As for your complaints of the current phones on the market, "Phones that work. Phones that sound good. Phones that have decent battery life." From what I understand and have seen, nearly every phone in the store has those attributes. I myself have a brand new phone that I picked up about a month ago. It is a phone that you would not want. Two high resolution color displays, mp3 player with stereo speakers, 1 megapixel video / still camera.

    "It works. " Check.

"It sounds good." Well, I have had no problem hearing people. I have taken it to a bowling alley, and people I talked to did not hear the ambient noise in the background. The speakerphone is also very clear and loud, and surprisingly lacks the echo that seems to be prevalent on most landline phones. I was impressed.

"It has a decent battery life." I use about 500 minutes a month. I have gone as long as 36 hours without plugging it in and making average amounts of calls throughout my two days. Also, I was testing the phone when I first got it. I watched a little over an hour's worth of video, listened to music for about an hour, and of course made some phone calls (didn't take note of how many) but in the end the battery was showing half full. Not exactly scientific, but batteries and power management are getting good across the board.

So, my recommendation is to buy the phone that you hate the least, and in a week you will be used to it. There you go.

Can somebody give me some insight into why people feel the need to immediately scream copyright violation and put and end to a cool thing like this? What possible reason or scenario could the subway be harmed in this situation? It just baffles my mind that someboy is getting paid to spend time to fight a fight that is so absolutely unneccesary.

This brings to mind a similar situation where the current owner of the old GI JOE cartoon series placed a cease and desist on an incredibly creative guy who redubbed / reedited some GI JOE PSAs and posted them on the Internet. I mean how in the world can this be destructive? Granted it is their right, but why is it a problem. Why spend the time and money protecting yourself (as that is what the law is for) from something that is completely docile and is of no worry?

I'm a bit miffed on the resolution of the device. The big bold text claims 720x480, while the specs say 320x480. I am going to guess that it's the latter, as 720 on a 3" screen would be a really expensive lcd.

I am curious how open the hardware is to the developers. Could one conceivably replace the dashboard (for lack of a better term) with a port of, say, Xbox Media Center? I would be hard pressed to find a better application for that software, besides Xbox of course.

I am picturing filling a 1gb card with a couple movies and music, and jumping on a 3 hour flight. I imagine games will also come in SD format.

  8. Similar Art installation on I/O Electronic Brush for Painting · · Score: 1

Can anybody remember an art installation that was a similar idea? It involved a paintbrush with a CCD camera built in that would effectively paint any surface onto a digital screen. It also incorporated live video of the artist as a source of ink.

I know the artist was big into digital installations like this, however I don't think it was implemented as effectively as the MIT brush.

Try using a USB mouse and then a wireless mouse. There is a huge difference in how it feels. I never like the the wireless ones anyway, they are heavier and more cumbersome.

Why isn't it possible, to set up an instant line of serial based communication using a system of Changed or Not Changed. Changed being a '1' and !Changed being a '0' You sync the clocks on the rover and back at NASA, and just manipulate the particles at 9600bps!
I'm going to attempt to answer my own question here and guess that the reason this form of communication is not possible, is because as soon as the particle's state is read, the state changes?
